As a general rule I don't think I've ever seen much point in borders. I get it during times of upheaval and unrest, I get it when you're trying to prevent bandits and pirates and marauders from slaughtering everyone in your town. But in today's world I just don't understand it. What's the point of passports and border patrols in countries that enforce these things the most? Hurting other people who are just like you but they live 5 miles down the road? That's all it seems to accomplish to me.

Heterosexual relationship culture is so alien to me and I don’t know if it’s the fact I’m not cishet or the fact I’m autistic but I hear so many things that make me go “Am I insane or are they?”

There’s a lot of hate on widowers and I saw a woman say “You cannot compete with a dead woman.” which is perhaps a reasonable statement to say if he’s constantly comparing you to his dead partner but that wasn’t what the post was about. And I realized “Oh my God, these people genuinely feel like they’re constantly in competition with their spouse’s exes and the ex being dead makes them feel insecure that they cannot best her.”

There’s also been an uptick in the ‘men and women cannot be ‘just’ friends’ rhetoric which I feel like is extremely dangerous and reflects the rise of fascism and sexism. Some of these stories of women feeling threatened by their husband’s female best friend have some merit and others are like “I feel angry that my husband still talks to the girl he grew up next door to and she and her wife are invited to family gatherings and included in family photos sometimes. Am I right to be suspicious?” No. No you’re not. I cannot imagine being you and living with that high level of stress and paranoia and constant torment and jealousy about your husband having a positive relationship with anyone who isn’t you.

give your characters exes.

give them a variety of exes. give them relationships that shaped who they are but did not last. give them people they tried very hard to love but it didn't work out. give them situationships that taught them things. give them something deep that was real but could not endure. things that hurt. things that ended amicably. people with whom hot passion cooled to warm affection and became undying friendship.

no more first and only. give me the context of what made them know the next or one after was final and right.

bizarre places with peculiar people

learning that 1. there's a thing called the 'gen z stare' 2. it pisses people off and 3. it's just underpaid service workers staring at someone until they follow a simple instruction, has been interesting.

for example, the card reader says 'remove card' the customer goes 'it says remove card, what do i do?' then some underpaid 20 year old just stares at whatever twat just asked that question. apparently that's devastating for baby boomers and gen x'ers, and they're complaining about it. retail workers should be allowed to jump the counter and kill customers

the caitvi kinktober thing is just...such a beautiful encapsulation of fandom discourse at this point. we've got the prohibition of things that are literally in canon. the way that half of the prompts wouldn't even be described as kinks by a normie. the inclusion of piss play (because the creator is into it) but other messy kinks are a no-go. no men, except trans men---but wait that's problematic, so we're walking that back.

my favorite thing though was the very obvious rhetorical strategy of the bullet point list, where they placed "thing that inherently involves a non-consenting party" on the same line as "thing that involves two or more consenting adults in the privacy of their own space."

age play is prohibited in the same breath as pedophilia - "animal-related" content (what, people dressed up in fursuits? petplay? werewolves?) is described in tandem with bestiality. it's literally how conservatives talk. everything is based on personal emotional disgust - wanting to fuck someone in a fursuit is the same as wanting to fuck a dog when you do not understand consent at all.

and that's literally all beside the point because this is storytelling where things happen to characters. shocking storylines are what makes fiction sell. did we cancel game of thrones for pedophilia and incest. do we hate bg3 because halsin fucks you as a bear. there's no self-awareness at all. stunning work, caitvi kinktober.
