But there were two sides to Mike. One was his presentation to society - the actor. This side constantly put on an act, always following the script handed to him by society, trapped behind a mask of expectations. When this side was being presented, he was the son with no tears left to cry and the brother with a duty of care wrapped around his heart.

The other side of him was who he was when he was alone. His raw self, the man who wasn't prepared to become one so early, the result of a cruel twist of fate. This side wished he was able to travel back in time to when he was 12 years old and brought all the knives from his kitchen to brutally murder the man who was going to take Garrett.

This was the side that he made sure Abby didn't see. He wasn't sure if he was able to live with himself if she saw the rage that he kept hidden away tightly in his fists.

Maybe he had been a little harsh to Ness, but it wasn't like he meant to come off as mean. Whenever he got in one of those - as his mother called them - fits of his, he would often say things he didn't mean or feel emotions at a heightened level that bordered on insanity, if he could say so himself. 

It felt like an unwanted presence was kicking on a locked door, boots against the wood so many times until it just broke down and got to him. It wasn't his fault; he did lock the door, after all, what more could he have done?

Ness rolled his eyes at himself. "Shut up, brain," he hissed to himself. He stood up and decided to restock the tissues in one of the booths just to have something to do besides thinking. Exhausting work, thinking, he chuckled dryly to himself as he walked up to an unoccupied booth, so much of it spent on someone I can't even call my friend.

yall i may have written an inconsistency in my securitywaiter fic, and it's all due to my sleep deprivation 💀

in chapter four of my reputation's never been worse, so (you must like me for me), i wrote:

As he put cereal boxes atop the refrigerator he thought briefly about what he should make for dinner. It was a Saturday, meaning he didn't have to work that night.

but in chapter six, i wrote:

She tried to block out all the things that she heard Mike say about Ness. Math class first period tomorrow. I don't like math.

yea i'm sure u can see the inconsistency there without having me explain the issue

i'll fix it sometime later but i hope u all don't mind that little mistake 😭
