Four friends, Tino, Carver, Lor and Tish, spend each weekend exploring new levels of fun. Whether they're gearing up for a sports competition or just hanging out in their Southern California beach town, these inseparable pals help one another negotiate the many obstacles of preadolescence. The underlying theme of the series is friendship - its ups and downs, the compromises and sacrifices, and above all the sense of humor that it takes to keep four very different young people together.

I had no idea about the divorce subtext in the weekenders. Like, I knew Tino was a kid of divorce, but i didnt think anyone else was. I knew at least Trish wasnt.
My two cents: I believe Phil was referring to the subtext of the show's original concept.
[Note: This is not the first time Phil mentions the divorce subtext]
Doug Langdale (the show's creator) originally wanted the series to be more like Peanuts, in that you'd never have seen the kids' parents. Divorce was always going to be one of the underlying themes though, given that the show was based on its creator's childhood, and he was the only child of a single parent, just like Tino was. He chose to add the parents later on since Tino, Lor, Carver and Tish are older than the Peanuts characters, and 12-year-olds tend to interact more with adults. And so because Doug Langdale originally had no intention of showing the parents (like... at all!) or to give any on-screen explanation for their absence, I think the metaphor Phil mentioned worked better for the early version of the series. Funnily enough, with the possible exception of a few episodes (Like Tish's "Momatouche" or Tino's Dad) they did show one 'main family' at a time, so one peculiarity of the original concept is still there in some way... I suppose!

Heyyyy first of all thanks for all the work you've put into this blog over the years! :D i was wondering if you'd ever giffed the bit from Crushing roulette where Tish talks about forcing herself to love broccoli and her mom interrupts the conversation? It's an old fave!
Hey! Aw, thank you! ^^ What a cool request, I can't believe I'd never posted that scene before... but it's on the blog now!

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has been quietly re-releasing the two Weekenders volumes previously exclusive to the Disney Movie Club through Amazon, MovieZyng, and DeepDiscount. Both volumes were only available (and ridiculously overpriced) on the likes of eBay up until a few months ago, so I thought I'd share the official copies:
Amazon: Volume 1 | Volume 2 MovieZyng: Volume 1 | Volume 2 DeepDiscount: Volume 1 | Volume 2

Do you perhaps have a gif set of the scene where Tino and his mum are talking and Tino says something along the lines of. wow I can see your lips moving but all I hear is blah blah blah. Or something to that equivalent. ??
I sure do! The old gifs can be found here, but I am about to post a new version right now! :)

Apologies if you're not taking gif requests anymore, but if you are (and you haven't done this one already), could I please get a gifset of the "CARP" scene? Thanks!
There are different versions available of the same scene under the episode's tag, but they are pretty old gifsets, so I just posted a new version for you! And yes, requests are always open! :)

The Weekenders smooth animation appreciation
"[The show] represents all of the strengths of DTA's creator-driven production model – superb writing with excellent translation into action and smooth animation – while functioning as a cleverly modulated, restrained retort to other studios' frantic production styles. It is a model program that deserves far more attention than it received during its original production run." [ David Perlmutter, writer ]

Note
I read somewhere that Wayne Brady was asked to do the theme for The Weekenders and he ended up writing it like, 10-15 minutes before he had to sing it, on a napkin in his car.
That still blows me away.
Oh yeah! And what an iconic theme song. They had the music for it, but the previous lyrics wouldn't work. He did a fantastic job with it. And very intuitive of Doug Langdale too, whose idea it was to call him in.

Thought I’d briefly revive this series to see how well I remembered the character designs of Disney’s The Weekenders. This one was a real stretch for my brain; I’ve watched the theme song on occasion, but for the most part it’s been almost two decades since I regularly saw these characters. In any case, I got a lot closer than I thought I would. I was surprised to learn that this show gave it’s characters a full wardrobe of clothes to choose from for each episode. I picked the outfit for each that was closest to what I was imagining.
