Text
In the past, during the Renaissance in Italy for example, when the church commissioned artists, the general populace was comfortable with art because they were comfortable with religion. Artists were commissioned by God, so art was backed up by a divine and formulated spirituality. At the time, God was the highest-paying sponsor. Now that God has been supplanted by things like Coca-Cola and panty hose, art has found new sponsors with no ideology except sales. Commercial art usually expresses nothing more divine than the product it's advertising. Only gallery art has remained pure; it flowers as its own religion and exists on its own. No wonder it must have its own clique. No wonder it's misunderstood. No wonder the average citizen could care less.
