The rule of the assorted Band-aid (or plaster) box is that if you need a big Band-aid, you will only be able to pick small ones out of the box. If, when you come back the next day, needing a small Band-aid, you will only be able to pick large ones out of the box. Don鈥檛 ask me why. I don鈥檛 make the rules.

I recently visited the Upper Belvedere Museum in Vienna, Austria, and out of all the art that was there (Klimt鈥檚 The Kiss!), this one intrigued me the most. It鈥檚 a portrait carved out of boxwood of Anna Fronleitner by Wiener Bildschnitzer (great name!) from 1533. It鈥檚 quite small and located in a case that you have to look down on, not hanging on the wall. Most people in the room didn鈥檛 even glance at it, but I couldn鈥檛 stop looking at it. It鈥檚 not that obvious in the picture but she seems to come right out of the wood and look at you. Who was she? Who loved her? Did she die young? Was that why someone commissioned a portrait? Or was it to find her a husband? She鈥檚 described as the daughter of Benedict Fronleitner, so unmarried at the time of the portrait.
