The rule of the assorted Band-aid (or plaster) box is that if you need a big Band-aid, you will only be able to pick small ones out of the box. If, when you come back the next day, needing a small Band-aid, you will only be able to pick large ones out of the box. Don’t ask me why. I don’t make the rules.

I recently visited the Upper Belvedere Museum in Vienna, Austria, and out of all the art that was there (Klimt’s The Kiss!), this one intrigued me the most. It’s a portrait carved out of boxwood of Anna Fronleitner by Wiener Bildschnitzer (great name!) from 1533. It’s quite small and located in a case that you have to look down on, not hanging on the wall. Most people in the room didn’t even glance at it, but I couldn’t stop looking at it. It’s not that obvious in the picture but she seems to come right out of the wood and look at you. Who was she? Who loved her? Did she die young? Was that why someone commissioned a portrait? Or was it to find her a husband? She’s described as the daughter of Benedict Fronleitner, so unmarried at the time of the portrait.
