Coming out of hiatus long enough to share my headcanon for a "near canon" AU

Elgar'nan was originally a primordial or the first spirit of Protection who became Tyranny after his purpose got tainted.

When a spirit such as one as powerful as Elgar'nan is released from their mortal body, they may either shatter and stay in the mortal world with retained memories or be regathered into the Ether to be reborn anew as their original self in the Fade but without the memories of their time before. I am kinda giving him a redemption arc in this manner.

Ghilan'nain was not originally a spirit. She was a mortal elf who was raised into godhood by Andruil's recommendation and has Andruil's Vallaslin on her face—which is why she wears a mask to hide it. Her ascent into godhood was not too far unlike another specific ritual, which gave her something akin to a spirit-like soul.

The Grand Necropolis is half in the Fade and half not. The veil is so thin down there it's practically nonexistent and the whole of the Necropolis is controlled by a very powerful Genius Loci.

Lyrium is not the only way for a spirit to get a body, but it is the only way for a spirit to get a body and retain their spirit-like powers. Can be tainted red by blight, a titan's anger, or powerful blood magic.

Lichdom is the closest ritual modern day mortals can do to ascend themselves into something akin to spirit form while still retaining the creativity of mortals. The ritual is imperfect and does not work for everyone—rots the body of those it does work for.

Blood mages are still trying to discover a way to become a vampire without involving hunger demons. To them, it would be the ultimate form of a blood mage. They might be close to something.

The Executors control the Devouring Storm, and are living titans that the Evanuris could not touch who escaped across the ocean and even under it to get away from them. They can control blight and extend their consciousness into smaller vapor-like entities using the water. With who they consider their final Evanuris enemy sealed away inside the blighted black city, they all but are assured a victory after all this time.
