I had the honor of spending an hour in the company of this splendid juvenile Cooper’s Hawk while she tried to find a meal in my back yard (I’m using female pronouns because I don’t call birds “it” so if I don’t know their sex I just pick one so as to acknowledge their beingness). She was intensely alert yet unconcerned about my presence. My heart almost stopped when my chickadee friends, who had wisely been staying away, flew back into the yard calling out alarms. A few of them flew to the plum tree where she had settled and started harassing her. She tried valiantly to catch one but they’re too fast and agile so eventually she gave up and flew away. I was both relieved that none of my little friends had lost their lives and sad that she was still hungry.
