Madonna and Jean-Michel Basquiat photographed by Glenn O'Brien, 1982.
Glenn O'Brien:
I interviewed Madonna a number of times; I couldn’t tell you the actual number. We met in her youth, and my late youth, when she was going out with my friend Jean-Michel Basquiat and he brought her to my home for Thanksgiving dinner. He was having his first big success as a painter and she was on the verge of releasing her first record. I had never heard of her, but I liked her immediately. Somehow I got the idea she was black, because she had dark hair in dreads and, apparently, one of the only tans of her life. Shortly after that I saw her perform on the roof of Danceteria and became convinced she was going places.
We became friends, I suppose after I wrote something nice about her first album, and we encountered one another frequently for several years and had a lot of mutual friends. A few years after this I worked closely with her as her editor on the SEX book, which sold about a million copies and ruined her career several times. That was really fun. Madonna is very sassy and loves to crack wise, and I never had a bad time in her company. I never worked with anybody who was sitting on my lap before. Later I worked with her on the Girlie Show tour book, which I did for peanuts.
