the whole point of the banshees of inisherin is that none of them will be remembered. not padraic, not colm, not dominic, not siobhan, not the priest or the bartender, none of them. they all live on a small island off of ireland with little to nothing for their name. all of them are dull, boring, just like their environment. they're not going to be remembered in the long term. but what's important is that they will be remembered by each other. they will remember that dominic died in the river, they will remember that siobhan left, they will remember that colm chopped off his fingers and they'll remember how desperate and nice padraic was. legacy doesn't matter when you aren't nice to the people who will live to uphold it. no one is going to remember colms music, but in the short term, they'll remember what he did to padraic, and they'll remember how mean that was. they'll remember what happens when you're mean to the nicest man around. and after that, what legacy will you have left?

if it helps nothing is permitted. you arent allowed to do anything. everything you do will always be able to be interpreted as, and therefore is, wrong. youre going to hurt people. you are going to manipulate people. youre going to fuck up. so what rules do you want to break? how do you want to be wrong? what kind of harm are you okay with doing to a person? what kind of manipulation is true to you? what kind of fuck up do you want to be? how do you make peace with the violence implicit in living? start there.

a part of i saw the tv glow that stuck out to me that i don’t see talked about enough is owen talking about how what maddy/tara is saying can’t be true because he remembers going to baseball with their mum and dad etc. they remember doing ‘boy’ things in their ‘boy’ childhood. idk how many times in my gender journey i’ve wrestled with the fact that i have been raised culturally as a girl and a woman, and severing that gendered past from my future is scary. how can i not be a girl when i was raised in girlhood. how can that not be who i am if that is who i was
#for reference i chose not to label my gender or sexuality but do not identify as cus gendered#i saw the tv glow#jane schoenbrun#movies#film#horror#transgender#queer
