I was asked by a friend yesterday if I could offer basic tips about comic paneling. As it turns out, I have a lot to say on the matter! I tried breaking down the art of paneling using the principles of art and design, and I hope it helps you out!

This whole thing was very much cranked out in a few hours so I had a visual to talk about with a friend! If this gives you a base understanding of paneling, that's awesome! Continue to pull in studies from the comics you see and what other artists do well and don't do well! You can tell paneling is doing well when the action is flowing around in its intended reading format.

Here's the link to the globalcomix article from which I pulled the images about panel staggering! Someone sent in a reblog that it wasn't totally clear that the 7th slide mostly covers what NOT to do in regards to staggering, and that is my mistake!

I saw in a tag that someone was surprised I used MamaYuyu too, and I don't blame them lol. If I had given myself more than a couple hours maybe I would have added something else on, I just really admire MamaYuyu's paneling personally.

uh uh, final append: I am by no means a renowned master of paneling, so if you find anything off base here, by all means, counter it with your own knowledge and ways you can build upon from here! Art is always a sum knowledge of everything we find. 💪

really not sure when it happened or why but personally I'm pissed that the queer community at large seems to have given up ground on the "people with penises/vulvas/testes/ovaries" language to sex & gender essentialists in exchange for the much less precise, much more demeaning "AGAB" language.

is it because you're scared of the word vulva? of acknowledging out loud that some people have penises? of recognising that many many people, including but certainly not limited to trans people, have mixed sex characteristics that cannot be accurately summarised by "afab/amab" as shorthand for "female/male"?

"in [GENITAL RELATED] situation AFABs will need to do X and AMABs will need to do Y" there are "afabs" with penises and "amabs" with vulvas. Saying this shit makes you look so unserious & honestly transphobic (given the ongoing erasure of post-op trans people within broader community). Intersex people and GRS have both existed for long enough (fucking forever and, decades, respectively) that we should well past making this basic fucking mistake.

quit referring to people by a vague & often violent event that happened at their birth as though it defines ANYTHING about how they & their body currently operate, and start using precise language so you at least look like you know what you're fucking talking about.

You could tell Eggman you’re trans and he’d immediately be like “Hoho! How would you like to try my brand new ULTRA MEGA TESTOSTERONE?!” And like it’d absolutely work but he’d definitely be using it as one of the benefits of joining the Eggman Empire. Which also has dental.

Also, on the end part of "Lunar breaks down" with Earth, I just have to say the posts I saw made that scene sound like she had looked Lunar dead in the eyes and went "I don't wanna help you" and walked away but like... She just accidentally overheard Lunar's breakdown and went "ah. fuck, i'll... let them cry it out first. i'll take a lap and come back."

Like that's? I feel like that's not even a bad or mean thing. If we're being real here, too, Lunar probably would have clammed up and tried to make themselves stop crying if Earth had walked in—which is arguably worse than crying it out for however long they needed to. There isn't anything she could have said to help either, this is evident in the fact there wasn't anything to say when Lunar properly came to the family about the matter the next day.

She didn't do a bad thing, she just... made a choice. Not even a notably bad choice. She just said "I can't help, I'll trust them to come to someone about that when they're ready." Like that's... that's fair. That's not even Earth having a flaw either she literally just chose to let Lunar have an alone moment like c'mon HDKSNDM
