Assignment Title: In-Game Scene Tools: iPad, Procreate, Unity
Link: https://devinnem.itch.io/2d-art Self-evaluative Feedback: I decided to stage a side scroller game, and I attempted to make distinct adjustments to each asset to ensure the scene looks like a game. I used three different versions of a monoline brush in Procreate for each asset, where the background was rendered with largest, most unstable brush and the foreground asset was rendered with the smallest, most solid brush. I adjusted saturation levels so the character would pop against the background, and I reduced a lot of the character detail to simulate an in-game model for this type of 2D art style.

Assignment: Character Design Key Art - The Arbiter Tools: iPad, Procreate Self-Evaluative Feedback: My goal for this key art was to portray the Arbiter as a menacing, unforgiving soldier. The stomp and rifle blast were my primary design choices, but I would've liked to add more detail to the force of the stomp if I made more time for it. The foreground and background feel distinct with opposing soldiers and space elements, and I made stylistic choices that helped blur most elements to emphasize the primary character. Overall, this key art sends the message I want: a militaristic space conflict with a enigmatic and cold-blooded leader in play.

Assignment 8: Character Design - Character Sheet Tools: iPad, Procreate Description: The Arbiter Character Sheet 1) Incredible strength allows them to carry their arm cannon with ease. One of their favorite heavy-duty weapons manufactured solely for the Arbiter's use.
2) Adorns robes for diplomatic discussions. Still is a menacing and intimidating presence during intense negotiations over the trade community.
3) The Arbiter treats war as sport, utilizing their primary hunting rifle to obliterate enemies in single blasts. A) The Arbiter's Shawl - A decorative piece that reveals their taste in luxury fabric and royal colors. In practical terms, the shawl protects the Arbiter a tinge more from the cold temperatures found in space. B) The Arbiter's Helmet - Protective headgear the Arbiter always wears. 3 filters are attached to the bottom of the helmet, allowing them to breathe comfortably in space and within oxygenated buildings. The Arbiter's face remains a mystery, as the visor is opaque from any other person's perspective. C) Combat Boots - Tactical boots the Arbiter wears regularly. While the Arbiter is a physical specimen without them, the boots enhance their speed, agility, and jump strength through micro-technology built in the soles.
D) The Wandering Rifle - The Arbiter's prized hunting rifle. A combination of natural and technological innovations created a weapon that utilizes material from the surrounding environment to supply its ammo.
Self-evaluative feedback: The biggest challenge for this assignment was choosing the different positions to portray the character. I had to be comfortable with redrawing the character from different angles, which meant being comfortable with irregularities between one visual characterization to another. I think I could have added more detail to all the characterizations, but I am satisfied with the foundational aspects each characterization brings.

Assignment: Character Design Part. 1 Tools: iPad, Procreate Description: The Arbiter, turn-around with two color variations.
The Arbiter - age unknown.
Head general and diplomat running the pitstop between the Earth and the Moon. An incredibly prepared and particular individual, they enforce a strict rule of law for the pitstop's officers, visitors, and inhabitants. Often regarded as an intimidating figure, especially when it comes to their combat intelligence and brutish behavior. Values sleek armor and regalia. The shawl is decorative and represents a small insight into the Arbiter's taste and personality. Even in spaces where oxygen is available, the Arbiter never takes their helmet off. No one has seen the face underneath the helmet, adding to their mystery.

Assignment: Arbiter Office, post altercation. Tools: Procreate, iPad Description: Arbiter office, known for it's cleanliness and heavy security, after a shootout between militant tourists and the arbiter's guards. The office has been left ransacked, with casualties confirmed.
Days after being cleaned, office was targeted and a shootout occurred.
Some ceiling lights shot out, which made navigation during the fight difficult for the guards within the office.
Bullet marks scar the walls, glass, and furniture - most noticeably near the arbiter's desk. Self-evaluative feedback: For this assignment, I wanted to disrupt the usually sterile office space by adding chaos in the form of a politically driven shootout. I made minor changes to the furnitures' positions - items on the floor, broken glass, and bullet marks. I experimented with the lighting in this space, which changed the mood of the lab-like environment. With more time, I would've have tried to include items that the militant tourist brought into the space since it could show some of the different styles between this world's communities.

Assignment: 07 Environment Tools: Procreate, iPad Description: The Arbiter's office - Every piece of furniture should be spotless that mimics a lab atmosphere rather than an office. - The weapon case should be the largest item in the office - simple and solid design that helps accentuate the treasured items inside. - The furniture should be smooth, cubic, and firmly attached to the floor to give an unnatural, off-putting feeling to the space. Self-evaluative feedback: I decided to reposition one of my blockouts to give myself the chance to present more of the items in this office. While I added more materials in this space that reflect the arbiter's infatuation with militant order and cleanliness, I found that his created background made it more difficult to show that this space was lived in. I wanted more materials included in this space but felt it didn't align to how I viewed the arbiter. Last note, I think I can do a better job at lighting and shadow work to add a better sense of dimension. References: https://pin.it/2OZG9ny

Assignment: Sketchbook - Prop sketches of an arm cannon Tools: iPad, Procreate Description: The Arbiter's prized weapon that symbolizes their power and grandiosity. - Pincers that mimic an insect - fitting for the Arbiter's long, lanky form. - A shield near the end of the gun adds a sleek and practical dimension to the Arbiter's powerful weapon. - An elbow pad/arm insert that keeps the cannon secured around the forearm and allows for rigorous movement while keeping the weapon stable.

Assignment Name: 07 Environment Tools: iPad, procreate, floorplancreator.net Description:
- Sci-fi, human-oriented hyper future, pit stop and trading outpost community in space.
- Law stringent community with heavy military force
- Arbiter office, guarded exterior, sterile lab feeling
- The Arbiter’s personal space, made for a frank and intimidating individual. Self-evaluative feedback: I struggled on this assignment in terms of execution. Blocking the top down view was helpful to start with, and as I thought about the space I chose, I imagined a clean, near-sterile office space which didn’t have a lot of items out in the open. When drawing the perspectives, I wasn’t sure how to best set up the space to showcase depth and a natural “used space” - mainly because this office is supposed to look like the opposite of used in this world. For the next steps, I’ll work to refine the space specific items and details that can still express the uncanny cleanliness I want for this office.

Assignment Name: 06 Procedural Art to Audio
Tools: Unity, C#, Procreate, iPad Audio Source: Movie - Tom Misch Description: Particle effect systems synced to aspects of an audio clip. Self-evaluative feedback: I knew I wanted to work with a rotating vinyl of some kind, so I attached a rotation script to the vinyl sprite to simulate the a music player. I utilized trail effects in this assignment frequently, and I liked the stretched sprite that persists throughout so much that I decided to remove the particle sprites to declutter the space. Syncing the percussion and guitar were challenging, but it took a little number tinkering to get them close to the beat. Had I more time, I would have wanted to experiment with more circular patterns around the vinyl to perhaps provide emphasis on certain beats.

Assignment Name: 05 Patterns from Particles Tools: iPad, Procreate, Unity Description: Particle effect pattern meant to represent sweetness and feelings of affection. Self-evaluative feedback: A lot of the process for this assignment included testing and experimentation, and I appreciated the opportunity to use particle effects in unity with sprites I drew myself. I wanted to create effects that were slow and smooth to represent a peaceful kind of affection, so decreasing the rate and velocity of the particles felt like the right decisions. Experimenting with the alpha values proved to be the most helpful for my vision as the fading in and out contributes to the softness I wanted to portray. I would've liked to have a little more distance between each particle, but the change in alpha values ensured the particles' proximity wasn't too much of an issue.

Assignment: 04 Pixelizing Monstrosities Tools: Piskel Description: Four pixelized renderings of Mausic Self-evaluative feedback: Focusing on the monster's silhouette was the biggest challenge for me. I wanted to capture Mausic's ears and microphone, especially for the 8x8 and 16x16 renderings. This process included a little experimentation, as well as trial and error, but it was much easier to tell when things didn't look right the first time. The subtle changes I made between the 32x32 renderings improved the monster's form: the adjustment to the ears and head were subtle changes that felt like it did a lot. I'm not fully sold on the 8x8, so I wonder what I could've done different in terms of shape and key features to render.
