We’ve continued to evolve the look of the show over all 5 seasons. […] We shy away from camera tricks and cheap visual effects, everything has to be earned, our visual language has to be earned. It’s driven by the story. […] If the camera is going to be flying at a million miles an hour then so is the narrative, so are the characters. We really try to accomplish old fashioned cinema on a tv schedule. Certainly it’s a noir show, certainly it’s a sci-fi show, certainly it’s a mystery, certainly it’s a procedural, but more than anything else it’s a show about a dark world and there’s a pinpoint of light, a pinpoint of hope, and The Machine is providing a little bit of hope, and that’s the thinking that begins the visual language. This year we’re taking more chances, we’re making it darker and a little bit more shadow-y. We’re going to try to do some things visually that haven’t been done before, make it more subjective, tell it more from each character’s point of view, and let each character take you through, not only an episode, [but making] sure every scene has a character- that scene is told from that character’s point of view. And really let our fans enjoy these characters more in season 5 than they ever have.
