Vaught's Greatest Dissapointment

This is just a sketch I did of the poster boy for the dark triad himself, Homelander. Whose personality on a good day can be summed up as follows:

He's the byproduct of humans playing God and what you get when you raise a child in a lab without the warmth of human affection.

He has all this power but the memories of being abused to hone that immeasurable strength make the power the root of his trauma.

Homelander aka John desperately craves validation, it's the leash tightly wrapped around the beast of his ego by his wounded humanity.

Now this doesn't mean he can be redeemed because the love he wants has become tainted by the primal need to dominate.

He is after all a superior being and according to theories of evolution it's part of the survival of the fittest to destroy their lesser counterparts.

Homelander was made for destruction. So his inability to hold himself together stems from that design and when he destroys himself he'll burn the world down with him.

No one man should have all that power ... especially if he's got mommy issues.

This was done on my favorite paper Strathmore 400 series which is a mixed media tan paper 300 g/m. While the paper has a very smooth surface I added gesso before sketching because I intend to paint over this in acrylic which created a rougher texture.

FEAR OF THE UKNOWN

This season I've been delving into the classics of horror and one can not speak of horror without mentioning the infamous HP Lovecraft.

Through out my life I've have been guided to the works of Mr. Lovecraft through the countless contemporary creative spawns whose own dreams became haunted by the chilling depiction of cosmic horrors and things too dreadful to speak of ... yet countless words have been dedicated in doing just that.

Authors like Stephen King, Clive Barker, and Junji Ito have been heavily influenced by the this prolific man who dies in utter obscurity. The concepts that carried over were not only man's fear of primordial forces but also the horrors of the dark passenger that exists in us as well.

This stranger buried in our bones and whose tendrils reach into our mind, body, and soul to beckon us towards him; whimpering words likes spells rooted in secrets we try to keep hidden.

They're were secrets that haunted Lovecraft and things he could not dare speak of so instead he spun tales around his childhood wounds to bind the madness.

Artist don't have to be saints to create works of art that carry on like parables. Lovecraft documented his own disillusionment and decaying mind by clinging on to what he valued most: His dreams. They were dark, they were twisted, but they utterly human.

So be weary the of the thoughts that cross your mind;

Be cautious of the passenger that sits idly by your side.

They aren't a stranger, but a familiar summoned by the secrets you tried to leave behind.

Daily portrait studies following along with one of mmmmonexx process videos on YouTube. He's a phenomenal artist who does amazing water color and sketch art.

I tired one of of his on directional hatching rendering technique above but I honestly found it so difficult to just not cross hatch.

The second face which I think kind of looks like Chandler Riggs from the (🤭) Walking Dead turned out better.

I have been binge watching THE WALKING DEAD and recently rewatched the Carl Papa dub; If you haven't seen it, watch it.

I've been also listening to Yungblood a lot! And this was the song I was listening to as I was doing the second half of the rendering.

DEVIL'S IN THE DETAILS

I've been watching a lot of proccess videos from IamWonder on YouTube and she uses a lot of markers + color pencils for her art and it inspired me to invest in some markers. So I just got myself some very cheap alcohol markers from Amazon 😆.

The brand is Caliart and this is a test artwork of my favorite comic book character Hellboy. I did this piece with just the markers to really evaluate their blend ability. I was super anxious since I've attempted Hellboy before but because I lacked blending knowledge he came out very ... red.

I have to say they blend very well for the price so I'm excited to use these for my underpainting mixed media work.

I paid $33.99 USD (tax and shipping and handling included) for this set of 100 colors. There don't seem to be any repeated colors.

The paper I used is Canson mixed media paper. It isn't the best quality paper so on a paper with more gsm the blend should be even more seemless but with these very inexpensive art supplies you can see how one can accomplish a very appealing artwork.

So if your tempted to get art supplies give these juicy markers a try.

Mass killing of wolves, multiple US states, spring and summer 2021.

Legalization of snares, bait, artificial night lighting assistance, unlimited number of wolves killed under one hunting license, and the killing of newborn pups, etc. Wisconsin hunters killed at least 216 wolves (of the state’s total 1,050-ish) in less than 60 hours after wolves lost legal protections. Then, Idaho’s governor signed a bill allowing the killing of up to 90% of the state’s wolves, and legalized the killing of newborn pups, with the Idaho Cattle Association supporting the bill “because it allows the free-market system to play a role in killing wolves.” Montana moved to allow unlimited killing of wolves under a single individual hunting license. Michigan and Minnesota are considering wolf hunts.

In April, Montana’s SB 314 set a goal of reducing the 800 to 1,200 wolves in the state to just 15 breeding pairs. The bill authorizes the unlimited take of wolves under one license, use of bait, and hunting on private lands even at night using artificial light. Additional legislation allows for the use of snares, extends the trapping season by a month, and establishes a scheme for reimbursement of costs associated with hunting wolves – essentially legalizing bounty hunting.

THE NYMPH WHO WOULD BE QUEEN

The beauty of this ship is in how it demonstrates a love that allows growth through affection, respect, and a very genuine desire to be loved in a way that makes both feel accepted in who they truely are.

This is essentially the foundation of their dynamic in Lore Olypmus even as separate characters Persephone and Hades struggle to be accepted but feel the burden of their respective isolation.

Hades is the Goth boi God of death who has become very love weary from dating demonic biches bent on tormenting him as mode of foreplay.

He idealizes the love his brother's have with brilliant Goddesses and when he sees Persephone her beauty outshines the world around him. Even though she is referred to as a mere nymph he saw her as a Goddess.

Flowers bloom from her hair and animals love her. How is this not the epitome of sexy to a man whose surrounded by decay ?

As for Persephone she's more than a beauty, she is a young woman overshadowed and oppressed by an overbearing mother. So while she has all this potential power it's stunted by th is dynamic. Not to mention her mother want her chaste and pure... FOREVER. 😬

She is the wounded feminine figure that unites with her wounded masculine counterpart and becomes greater in what this union teaches her to recognize in herself.

I will definitely be doing more fan art of these characters as this is definitely one of my favorite relationships in fiction.

PERSEPHONE Complete

I was able to finish Draw In My Style challenge Persephone from Olypmus Lore this week.

She isn't quite as pink as I would like her to be but she is still a cinnamon roll 😊.

I will definitely do a more loyal depiction in my style again in the future because I'm a perfectionist 😅.

Persephone is truely an interesting archetype to conceptualize budding womanhood and the pressures of being a "good girl". In this web comic Persephone becomes entangled with Hades after venturing to a party with her gal pal Artemis (whose also her protector of sorts).

In a compact with her mother Demeter, Persephone must fulfill her studies and join a chastened sect among the Goddesses or be brought back to her mother on the mortal realm.

Well, being young and beautiful amongst the most hormone thirsty patheon makes our young Goddess a focus for many of Olypmuses most thotty lords 😂.

She captures the attention of Hades who is just a man tired of dating Beckys who becomes entangled with Persephone after inciting the wrath of Aphrodite by proclaiming Persephone to be more beautiful than her.

Never insult the Goddess of love especially within earshot. Her plans are to have Persephone humiliate herself in the presence of Hades so she has her son Eros abduct her and take her to the underworld to "act a drunken mess" and force Hades to recant his statement.

Kind of a weird move but okay, Karen.

The beauty of Persephone is in her vulnerability and her open desire to understand those around her. She is a giver of life so her personality reflects this as she embodies prefect femininity to her own detriment.

I'm told she becomes more self aware of her power of agency throughout the comic so I wanted to capture that in my version of her with the golden light depicting a growing sense of power. I recalled the way Hercules looked in the Disney animated series so that was the inspiration for this was drawn from.

I think the song Lovely by Billie Ellish compliments the vibe of Hades x Persephone's romantic dynamic.

So enjoy the love vibe this weekend. Either in your own lives of by enjoying it vicariously through art like me.

LOVE AT FIRST FLIGHT

I was listening to Kid Laroi x Justin Beiber's song Stay and I was inspired to color this in the style of Lore Olympus and so it this random portrait study became fan art.

I'm not a huge fan of the Webcomic but I love the art style and Greek myths were a passion of mine as a child. They usually start with Zues being an epic fuxk boi and terrible at keeping his rotation on the DL 😁.

The story of Lore Olympus centers on the myth of Persephone and Hades. Not quite star struck lovers but two souls that become ensnared by the bonds of desire. The webtoon does a better job of making it more romantic rather than tragic and in this modern interpretation rather thab abducting a child bride Hades attempts to earn her love by giving her the power if choice.

When it comes to we we desire that is rarely within our control but how we pursue those we desire is.

How we choose to love and want we motivate ourselves with really make all the difference in making our romances tragic tales or truely noble endeavors.

Pulling an all nighter on my off day to do another portrait study. This isn't edited well and background music can be heard so mute for a more relaxed viewing.

I always go very light and build up my colors gradually. His skintone is a complex mixed tone with soft pink and gold undertones.

The images below are of the process and again I relied on using Arteza markers as a base for the skin tone and am using my Faber Castell pencils to do the blending.

The model's skin tone is much darker than what I have set down and I'm sure more confident artist can just capture the tone in fewer steps but I'm still cautious so I like to build value gradually.

I actually enjoy the process because it makes me realize the beauty of our skintones and that with a trained eye one can see the many spectrum of colors that bounce on the surface of them creating the impression of who we are to others in those wonderful hues.

I definitely see some beautiful pinks, light greens, deep browns in the models face. I hope to capture that vibrancy in my art.

TRACING Thoughts With An Unfocused Mind

I often switch between two sketchbooks at a time because it keeps me less focused on the end result of either and open to the process of simply drawing.

As get too rigid with one I move to the other. I don't always complete them both but I enjoy bouncing from one idea to the next because this is how I expirence my thoughts and I'm not disciplined enough to focus on a single subject as if I were.

I'm thinking of connecting these two images but I haven't figured out how yet.

This last doodle was something I did to 3st out some Acrylic paint markers I own. They kept bursting and the layers became thicker than I like but the design has potential for a second draft done in an art nouveau perhaps.

I finished it! I wasn't really patient enough to finish the hair but I suggest enough of the form. It's not great but it's how much effort the project inspired which is good enough for me right now.

I really love the way the colors pull through in the eyes. I followed Chris Hong's color study approach but I'll admit I am more cautious with my color mixing because really haven't mastered color theory yet.

I was told art needs to have a goal in mind and so my goal was to just be good at art which isn't very focused. I think like Hermione Granger I feel a need to prove myself worthy of being an artist in the same way she feels motivated to prove herself worthy of being a wizard.

I actually really love that character and draw Emma Watson made her more real. Thus character represents my own personal struggle as a person deemed unworthy for being a "mudblood".

I'm mixed race and it's something that has been used against me more often than it has allowed me to form allies. Art is something that has helped me come out of this space of insecurity about my place in society. The artist I have followed have made me realize the beauty of creation and the power of it.

I'm going to be channeling more of Miss Granger in the future.

Atlanta photographers Regis and Kahran Bethencourt think of themselves as “dream makers.”

That’s because the couple makes kids’ wildest dreams come true in portrait shoots. The results are conceptual, highly stylized photos of children dressed as visions plucked straight from their imaginations.

The Bethencourts hope the portraits transcend the typical images of beauty.

“We get so many amazing ideas,” Kahran told NPR’s Morning Edition.

Jhene Santana Brown, 15, a client from Providence, R.I., wanted to become a fairytale lion.

“I just loved lions and my favorite movie is Narnia,” Brown said. “So I wanted it to be fierce but also soft and kind.”

Twelve-year-old Whitcliff McKnight, a client from Smyrna, Ga., had a session that involved three distinct costumes. The inspiration: “renaissance man.” That’s what his mom calls him.

“The first [portrait] comes from my love of travel and foreign languages and the arts,” McKnight said. “The athlete theme comes from the sports I play, including soccer and basketball. And the futuristic type of theme comes from my love of video games.”

The shoots are affirming, says Dr. Terica Barton of Tampa, Fla, whose 8-year-old daughter, Alaya, transformed into an underwater mermaid for her portrait. 

“I think it’s absolutely important for little African American children and children of all races just because it shows them and highlights their beauty, it highlights their difference,” Barton said. “And sometimes it’s difficult in this country raising children that aren’t the majority and instilling in them the beauty and their differences and making them celebrate their differences and their culture.”

That beauty is encapsulated in Glory: Magical Visions of Black Beauty, which features more than 100 photographs.

“We really wanted to shatter the conventional standards of beauty for Black kids. We highlighted a variety of kids across the African diaspora,” Kahran said. “We bring to life past, present and future visions of Black culture.”

Each child in the book has their own unique backstory: an 8-year-old who is already a neuroscience expert, a 10-year-old DJ and a little girl who learned to read at the age of 1.

“We were noticing all these kids that we were running across on a daily basis who just didn’t have the platform,” Kahran said. “And so we definitely want to be able to use our platform to highlight them and highlight their excellence and highlight everything that they’re doing so that the world can see kind of this Black excellence on display.”

And that is, simply put, Regis says, “being yourself unapologetically.”
