The difference between 毎度 and 毎回

毎度and 毎回 both mean “every time” but sometimes they are not interchangeable. let's learn more about them :)

毎度　（まいど）

毎度 means “every time something happens” or “the same thing is repeated the same way”. Also, it can be used as an adverb “always/ every time”.

毎度 also implies a deeper appreciation and gratitude, and that it’s tedious and troublesome to repeat the action and it’s often used in hospitality industries.

For example, a store employee would say to a regular customer (毎度ありがとうございます) it implies that he’s thankful and did not expect the customer to visit again. So 毎度 is used to express how precious the visit is.

毎回（まいかい）

毎回, similar to 毎度, means “every time something happens” or “every time something is repeated”. The difference is that repetition is normal and you expect it. But keep in mind, even though they have the same meaning you can’t say 毎回ありがとうございます because the nuance of gratitude becomes weaker.

It’s used to express the repetition of actions, things, events. “Every time something is done” “every time it’s repeated regularly”

For example: (毎回同じお菓子を買います)

other patterns are 「毎回~する」　「毎回~がある」　「毎回~している」　「毎回~である」　「毎回のように」

毎回 is used in casual conversation. For example, it’s more natural to say (毎回、この本屋で本を買っています) than to say (毎度、この本屋で本を買っています) as it sounds heavier and unnatural.

Some notes:

[verb]ように出来ている means ‘made for/designed to [verb].’

欧米 (おうべい) means ‘America and Europe’ (the West).

環境 (かんきょう)=environment. I can never remember the kanji, which is pretty bad considering that’s what I study in school!

In the bottom right speech bubble she’s actually saying 少ない (すくない), ‘few,’ and I guess I could incorporate that by saying ‘there are only a few sick people like me,’ but to me that sounds that there are only like three other people with wings in Japan (maybe there are? I don’t have enough context).

I’ve never come across 並 used like this before, but as far as I can tell it works like みたい (?) So I think she’s saying “a lifestyle like an athlete’s,” which I reduced to “athletic lifestyle”—though I’m still not really sure about it.

A new phrase: 筋肉が落ちる (きんにくがおちる) means ‘to get out of shape’ or ‘to lose muscle.’

I’m not very confident in the second panel! For one I’m not sure what the reading of 豊校 is. Based on context I think it’s the name of a high school? Also, the boy’s second speech bubble might be more accurately translated as “I was wondering if you were going to Toyoko,” but to me that has too much of an air of finality in English. Literally, it’s “I was thinking, ‘Are you going to go to Toyoko?’”

Welcome to pages 1-2 of my attempt to translate the short manga 進学天使 (Shingaku Tenshi) by Ryoko Kui!

Let’s start with the cover:

So! The title is 進学天使 (しんがくてんし). I cant think of a clean way to translate this into English—my best attempt without being super clunky might be “An Angel Continues her Education.”

(more literally it might be “an angel who is going on to higher education” but since she’s just going to high school and not university, it doesn’t read well in american english)

～ことになる means that the speaker has not decided the action themselves—it has been decided for them by someone else. In this case she’s not super thrilled about studying abroad in America because someone else (who?) is basically making her.
