https://exactitudes.com/collectie/ : In 1994, a Dutch photographer named Ari Versluis and his collaborator Ellie Uyttenbroek were asked to document the youth culture in the Netherlands. They proceeded on photographing a series of adolescents in the Netherlands that were also similar to each other in terms of clothes and looks. Because the project was successful, they started a new one which is now known as "Exactitutes”. It is currently ongoing and has 154 different series where each series documents a different group’s style. Some examples of their series’ are; the preschoolers in Beijing, the fur-coat-wearing women in Milan and even the “hipsters” of Amsterdam. These artists have made an huge influence on my own project, as my concept for my project is quite similar to theirs. I liked how they wanted to show a distinct pattern within their photographs, which is what I aim to do as well.

Presentation/Display
To begin with, there will be 6 images in total for display. The photographs come in diptychs and are categorised as a typology series. Because it is categorised as a series, there is a relationship between the photographs. Therefore, the photographs will be printed on cardboard and displayed next to each other. The following photo I added is an example of what the display layout will look like. There will be a wall text next to the project that will have the project title, year and the artist’s full name. The colour of the wall text will be a beige that is gradually fading into black. This colour was chosen, as it is related to how the photographs are displayed. The first photograph, for example, is a fully coloured and the one next to it is the black and white version of it. Moving on to the medium, the photographs will be printed on cardboard and will have a small frame around it. The reason why I chose the display layout to be quite simple is because I want the audience just to focus on the pattern being presented to them in this series. The presentation would mostly be in galleries that specifically focus on showing photography works. Thus, the audience would be people who are interested in photography.

Bernd and Hilla Becher were German photographers that photographed a series of photos that were made up by different “types” of buildings, streets and landscapes. They are known to be the “grandparents” of typology photography, which is known as a body of photographs that share a common ground or have a high level of consistency. The Bechers have been photographing industrial plants, water towers and many more other architectural buildings in Germany since the 1950s. Their most famous typology series is called “Water Towers” (1988). As typologies are made by observing, collecting, naming and grouping, it helps show the audience that there is a distinct pattern within the photographs. If a statement is trying to be made in the series, the photographer can make this statement just by showing a pattern through their photographs.

PILOT PHASE PROJECT - British Fashion in the City
The concept of my project is merely based on the fashion I have been seeing around the city since I have been living here in London. I noticed how different the fashion and street style was compared to my home country, which is Turkey. I started taking pictures of people on the street and was also inspired by the Fashion exhibition in the Victoria and Albert museum. I wanted to specifically focus on British designers and British fashion, and ultimately portray it in a series of photographs. I used the technique of triptych to present my work.

Farfetch, an online luxury fashion retail platform, posted an article on December 20th of 2019 that talks about the best of the many British fashion designers. Some of these fashion designers are Vivienne Westwood, Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen and Thomas Burberry. This article not only showed me the best British fashion designers, but also helped me understand how these fashion designers have used the British culture in their designs. This helped me understand what kind of people I wanted to photograph in order to portray the British fashion culture that I wanted to show in my Pilot Phase project.
