ok i always see gen 4/sinnoh get so much hate but its a really great gen and its extremely underrated. i've collected some resources to learn about it, download it so you can play it, and more!

MAC USERS- HOW TO PLAY DPPT ON YOUR COMPUTER:

Option one- download OpenEmu

from there, go to coolroom and search for the version(s) you wish to download.

Download the file, then launch OpenEmu. There should be various tabs that say "Nintendo DS" "Gameboy" etc. Click on Nintendo DS and drag the Diamond, Pearl, or Platinum file into the (currently) large, blank space.

Double click to start playing!

Option 2 for mac!

Download DeSmuME

Go to coolrom, search and download the version(s) desired.

Open up Desmume and then drag-and-drop the file into the Desmume window. However, make sure that the ROM file is in the same folder as the Desmume program. 

Launch the game!

Windows users!

Download DeSmuME

Go to coolrom, search and download the version(s) desired.

Double click on the emulator exe to open it.

 In the EMU click on File -> Open 

Select the .NDS file (ds game rom) to open and click Open 

Select Emulation and click on Run to start playing the game.

Now that the downloading is out of the way, you should probably know some more about the region itself. The Sinnoh region is based off of part of Japan. It is mountainous, and has a darker shade of grass compared to the Hoenn region. You live in a small town called Twinleaf Town, with your mother and your best friend, Barry (by default. His name may be changed.) There are many things to explore on your journey, such as The Underground, Contest Hall, The Fight Area, and more. For a short while, the GTS (which originated in this region) was also available, but wifi services that supported it were shut down.

In this region, you can choose from three starters.

The first is Piplup. Piplup is a water type, but evolves to be water/steel. It has little strategy competitively, but in game it can plow through lots. It is good with its type balance, as it can learn grass and water moves to counter ground types (possible E-quake users) and its water/steel typing gives it partial resistance to fire. It has a great design as well.

Next is Turtwig. I have never used Turtwig, but I have heard its better off competitively than in game. Being grass and ground type once it evolves, it partially resists fire and water, which are common types. It has access to E-quake, which can help knocking out bulky steel and fire types. 

Last but not least is Chimchar. Chimchar is pure fire at first, but evolves to be fire/fighting. It struggles through the first gym, but other than that, its extremely useful. It has a great design once it fully evolves and becomes a powerhouse. It can hit steel types effectively, and its just overall badass.

Whichever one of these you choose will be the one that is weak to the one your rival chooses (ex: i choose chimchar, my rival chooses piplup since fire < water)

The main characters in this game are you/protagonist, Barry, Prof. Rowan, Team Galatic/Team Galatic commanders, Lucas/Dawn, and Cynthia. I will do an overview of all of these.

Protagonist

The default name for your protagonist will depend on the gender you chose. If you chose male, the fanbase commonly refers to that one as Lucas. For female, she is often called Dawn. You can change your name, but these are the common default ones.

Barry

Barry, or whatever you decided to nickname him, is your rival. He is also your friend, but mainly your rival. He will commonly battle you, using the Pokemon starter that is good against the starter you chose.

Prof. Rowan

Rowan is the Pokemon Professor of this region. You meet him at the lake, where he leaves his briefcase behind and you steal some Pokemon from it to fight against the Starly that ambush you. He gives you that Pokemon after you visit his lab. His assistant is Dawn/Lucas, depending on the gender you chose.

Team Galatic

Ah, my favorite villainous team, Team Galatic. They dress up in spaceman-like suits, and have oddly colored/styled hair. Each of their "commanders" represents a planet, each with that planet's respective color for their hair color (ex: Mars has bright red hair). Their goal? to rebuild the Galaxy in Cyrus (the leader's) image, using some of Sinnoh's Legendary Pokemon, which are said to have created the entire world. Later, they state the plan was also to find new energy. This team's focus is space, and they're quite quirky, which draws me to like them.

Lucas/Dawn

I know, I know, I already said these guys are the protagonist. However, if you chose the male (Lucas) then Dawn will become Rowan's assistant and vice versa. You seem them frequently throughout the game, and they are the ones who give you and teach you how to use Pokeballs.

Cynthia

Cynthia is the Elite Four Champion of the Sinnoh region. She is the very first female champion, and she's great. She appears throughout the storyline, much like Alder from BW. Outside of that, though, she's a tough and fierce champion who will wreck the unprepared. 

Thats most of the plot points and important characters I can think of.
