I've personally read the 'curious mania' line as him being really proud of and maybe overprotective of his closest friend and student, possibly in a way that reads as clingy to outsiders who don't know them (I've been in that position myself with some of my friendships).

I did not expect a Bloodporne mention though, based. My friend showed it to me a while ago and it's so cursed, funny shit. Also lines up with my headcanon of Gehrman being a disaster bisexual.

Dumbest take I've seen in this fandom is accusing Gehrman of pretending to be disabled. I'm not making this shit up I swear to god. The existence of ambulatory wheelchair users aside, did they. Did they miss the part where his entire foot is gone. Did they miss that he also uses a cane. MOREOVER did they miss the part where in Ending 2 you're sitting in the wheelchair that he used to use in the Dream thereby implying it is a function of the dream and a physical manifestation of a mobility limiter (rather than aide) that the moon presence likely set in place to cap the power of the host hunter.

I think some people project their own freaky thoughts of the doll and Maria onto Gehrman when it's not warranted at all by the narrative. Too many people have fallen for the pervert meme and end up overlooking Gehrman's actual character (which causes many to disregard his positive traits). It's also not really ever explicitly confirmed that he had feelings for Maria beyond a deep friendship or possibly a more familial relationship.

ALSO people don't seem to understand that Gehrman and Maria were much closer to each other in age when she was alive and she looks young when we meet her because she died a long time ago.

Also sure he CAN walk on his peg leg, he can also kick your ass on his peg leg, but there is no way in HELL that thing is comfortable to put weight on. He only does it when he absolutely has no other choice.
