Bella wasn’t born self sacrificing. It was a trait that was thrust upon her out of necessity though she still doesn’t realize that. Because she’s been this way before she can remember. Always putting Renee first turned Bella into someone who thought she had to put everyone first.

You see a lot of it in the way she feels guilty for rebuffing Mike despite him not taking the clear and not even really a hint that she’s not interesting. And there’s the obvious when it comes to Edward. She thought first of the risk to him if things ended badly, and second of the fact that things ending badly meant her death.

With Charlie she doesn’t do it as much but only because he never puts her in that kind of position. He takes care of her, he lets her live and makes sure she’s alright and gives her the freedom to be a teenage girl with a safety net at home. Bella has a really hard time finding the balance in a heathy amount of selfishness. And even if she doesn’t fully realize it, having something so stable as a reliable dad gave her more than she ever knew she needed.
