Moving Out & Up
In the past year, I’ve been very fortunate to have met a man with whom I can build a life. This summer, we anticipate getting our own place together, and while his parents are more than supportive of the decision, my own mother is… less than enthused.
I know its common for people of my generation to continue living with their parents well into adulthood. The cost of living in southeast Connecticut is especially difficult to work around; staying at home would allow me to save more money for my inevitable move to continue my education in Boston or NYC while simultaneously helping my mother with her finances.
Still, there are three main reasons why I need to push ahead with moving out this summer.
1. My mother needs to learn independence.
My mother has never lived on her own. Always with a relative, a boyfriend, and now just with me. She has always been a very dependent person, and I feel like this experience would push her to stand up for herself more and try to take charge of her own home and finances. I do help her a lot, though we butt heads very often. She’s been through a lot, but I don’t want her to continue living her life as though she has been crippled by those experiences.
2. My boyfriend and I need to test the waters.
I graduate from my associate’s program this semester. David has one more year to finish his bachelor’s. During that final year, we have an opportunity to spend my gap year/his senior year cohabiting in CT to see whether we can actually last as a domestic couple. After the year is up, David wants to move with me to Boston or NYC (depending on which schools accept me) so that I can finish my bachelor’s degree. Rather than figure out that we can’t live together in a city we don’t know on a high risk lease, we’d rather get that through with here, close to home.
3. I need to learn to live with myself.
An ex once told me that he noticed a distinct difference between college students who moved out of their parent’s place and those who decided to stay at home. He found them to be more driven, to have a more concrete idea of self and an urge to forge their own path. A lot of cliches and buzzwords, I know, but I think it would be interesting to see if that holds true for me.
This plan all hinges upon whether I can budget my expenses well while balancing my home, school, and work life. One benefit of doing this during my gap year is the removal of school obligations for the time being. But I’m going to have to put in some serious overtime in order to handle both the expenses my mother still needs help with as well as my new expenses with David.
A lot of things could go wrong, but a lot of things could go right.
Cheers.

Day 11 — 04•07•2018
Slept in late. Babe slept over so I didn’t get much sleep. Not used to having another body in bed with me. Spent the day working on the set, having a coffee date, and going out to a late dinner with babe. Good day good day

Day 8 — 04•04•2018
Treat yourself. Even in the smallest of ways.
I decided to sleep in today. Couple more hours of sleep never hurt anyone.
If you’ve been working so hard on a project, at work, or even on yourself... it’s okay to take a break. Do something for yourself for a change.

Sometimes you’re not allowed to sit around and do nothing. That’s just the boost I needed today. Finally working on things that contributed to a big project. Hope I can do it again

Day 4 — 03•31•2018
Quiet day, staying in and playing some video games with some long distance friends. Seems like a great way to spend a Saturday in my opinion.
Maybe I’ll go for a hike later if it’s warm enough.

Day 3 — 03•30•2018
Late night thought: Just imagine how long it would take for a giraffe to vomit. He’d just be sitting there moaning and then it’d finally come out minutes later. Weird right?
Also, I hate being a DD....
Babe came over so it’s at least a good day

Trying a new thing and kind of want people to ask me questions. Anything works, and I also want some pancakes. Those sound really good.
