Process, process, process. A sculpure like this takes upwards of two-hundred and fifty hours to make. First, the inner structure is 3D printed in several parts with each print cycle taking between fifteen to twenty hours. Each part is then wrapped in structural carbon fibre and joined together, baking overnight in a heated curing room set at 55·C. A carbon fibre sock is then worked very carefully over the structure for several gruelling and difficult hours. Resin is mixed and applied to the carbon fibre and then compressed and wrapped with electrical tape - another, extremely long, arduous procedure. It is cured again, and the feet are attached. The new year has much things in store. Hard work, long hours of thankless sanding, almost certainly blood, and many proverbial tears. Yet, there is a deep aliveness that is touched when, after two difficult years of material exploration and prototyping, a project finally starts to come together. TONIGHT: on show at @smithstudioct - Ouroboros 4.1.1. 2017. ABS, carbon fibre, resin. 25x20x31cm. As part of "Salad," the gallery's year end exhibition. . . . . "Ouroboros” are a series of free-standing sculptures that represent an unbroken, seamless line twisting in space. The series represents the interface between art, advanced 3D technologies and material innovation. The form of the sculpture evokes the “Ouroboros”, an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its own tail. Famously, in the late 19th Century the German organic chemist August Kekulé had a dream of a snake biting its tail. He described this as the eureka moment when, after decades dedicated to working out the structure of hydrocarbons, the shape of the snake biting its tail in a dream provided a crucial clue to deciphering the molecular structure of benzine. Benzine has a C6 structure, one closely linked to the C4 molecular structure of carbon fibre, the material in which these sculptures are made. Carbon fibre is an embodiment of the great advances in material technology to which the last decades have been subject. Raw carbon fibre is combined with a plastic resin to form carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer composite.
