Wenclair and the Queerbait Allegations

I dont think the Wednesday writers are queerbaiting. I say this as a shipper who will continue to ship them regardless of what happens in the show.

Before I go into why, here is the definition I'm working with when i say queerbaiting.

Queerbaiting refers to the practice of hinting at non-heterosexual relationships or attraction — such as in a TV show — to appeal to an LGBTQ+ audience without ever actually depicting such relationships or sexual interactions.

By this definition I do not believe the Wednesday writers are actively queerbaiting. They have never hinted at either girl having homosexual attraction or a relationship infact they took great pains to make sure that their relationships with their male love interests fell into certain romantic tropes. Particularly Wednesday, we have her and Xavier saving each other, Xavier being haunted by visions of her/ her being his "muse", her actively seeking out Tyler (for information but still) the two kisses and their romantic date.

The problem is the writers are very bad at writing straight romance. Mainly because they suck at writing male characters. The writers wanted the show (particularly season one) to focus so much on the female characters that its seems like they were scared of giving their male characters too much depth. This would be fine if they didnt insist on pairing these bland men with dynamic female characters which lead to the difficult choice of Wednesday x Wonderbread One or Wednesday x Wonderbread Two.

I'm aware that both men had plot lines. Tyler with his abusive dad and mommy issues and Xavier with his daddy issues. They could have both been compelling stories but since they took a backseat to borh guys trying to strong arm Wednesday into a relationship I didnt care for them much. Infact I thought it made the guys seem like the stereotypical angsty emo boys. Which just made them annoying.

Additionally there are three other factors to consider when accounting for the popularity of Wenclair despite the lack of queerbaiting in canon. The first is Jenna Ortega hating the idea of the love triangle and purposely playing disinterested when interacting with the guys. Wenclair shippers arent just being gay and delusional. She does look uninterested and its intentional.

The second is the actors endorsing Wenclair. I know shippers take this to mean that Wenclair is going to be canon. Its not. Any show centred around friendship is going to have shippers especially if the canon love interests are bland and the actors playing the friends have romantic chemistry. As an actor when that happens you have two choices, endorse the ship, boost the numbers of your show and engagement with you specifically or shoot it down and be labeled as a bigot and enemy number one of passionate fans. I'm not saying the cast cant genuinely like the ship or that actors from past shows who where vehemently against queer ships werent homophobic. I'm saying the actors cant change the script. The most they can do is play the dynamic as romantic which would only fuel queerbait allegations.

The last factor is the fact that Wenclair had shippers from the start. I remember when the first trailers dropped, I remember the fan edits and the fact that they had 100 fics on Ao3 prior to episode one airing. Wenclair would always have shippers. They fall so neatly into the grumpy x sunshine/ sun and moon archetypes its practically shipbait. The fact that the love interests were bland and Wednesday obviously had a deeper bond with Enid just added fuel to the fire.

I dont think the Wednesday writers queerbaited with Wenclair because they dont have moments that fall into any obvious romantic cliches. They say things that could be interpreted as romantic and they have scenes that could parallel past Addams Family media but most ships involving Wednesday can claim that.

The special thing about Wenclair is the fact that besides Eugene, Enid is the only non family member Wednesday holds in high regard. She listens to her, she cares when she hurts her feelings and she does things Enid wants her too (it usually serves her in some way but its more than her love interests can say). Enid understands her and makes an effort to accept her as she is instead of romanticizing her and trying to make her be someone she is not the way others do.

Thats why wenclair is popular. The beauty of their relationship and the fact that it could easily translate it an even more beautiful love story. That doesnt necessarily mean they're queerbaiting. The writing is so bad they dont have too. When I think about the male love interests what I know of them off the top of my head is.

Xavier has daddy issues and gives off poor little rich boy vibes.

Tyler has parental issues and is a sociopath.

Ajax is a gorgon.

Bruno is a werewolf with nice hair. He also shifted late.

Why would we ship them with the girls. What makes them compatable? Why do they like each other? Name one heartwarming or heated romantic interaction with any of these guys that sticks out? And people wonder why we ship the women? Look at the material!

I really hope that when Kanon finally figures out her own feelings that she’s just open about it. Like she tells Rinne and Ayano(who are both exasperated she’s only now figuring it out), comes out to her parents, maybe even asks her teacher for advice. And they accept her for it, are supportive about everything. Cause I want to see the opposite of Saki’s fears, I want to see the people around them accepting Kanon being gay. And then I want Kanon to have the chance to help Saki accept herself, the same way Saki has helped her so far
