The two heroes of SC finally speak. The SC Commander, Erwin Smith rests his tall stature deep into the sofa, with expectant blue eyes awaiting the start of the interview. The color of his eyes resemble the blue hue of the vast skies, symbolizing the desire for freedom shared by humanity.

The other SC member, Captain Levi, is seated, with both his legs propped up on another chair. At first look, he seems bored. However, the sharp glint in his eyes radiates an unapproachable aura. At last, the time to interview these two most vital personnel in SC has finally arrived.

Journalist (J) : Thanks to both of you for sparing the time for this interview, despite your busy schedules.

Levi (L): Cut the crap and ask what you want to ask already.

Erwin (E): This is a way to promote us. As long as this can contribute to the SC, I will answer any kind of question.

J: Thank you very much, Commander.

L: Did you know? This boring interaction was all planned by Erwin in the first place!

E: That’s right. After all, even the MP would wish for more understanding between average citizens and soldiers. I am really glad that everyone accomplished their part in making this happen. This has increased the support for the military.

In the previous part of this interview, we were able to learn more about the SC commander’s and captain’s responsibilities and private lives.

In this latter part, they will be placed in two different rooms and interviewed individually. We’ll try to obtain information on their impressions towards each other and listen to their true feelings in a private setting…

Journalist (J): Well then, Captain Levi, I invite you to do your individual interview first.

Levi (L): …Do you think by doing this, I’ll give out information on SC activities that will be useful to our image?

J: As someone bearing the moniker “Humanity’s Strongest,” you already give enough hope to humanity on your own.

L: So you want to ask about how to kill a titan? Many people in this world would say that this is useless knowledge.

J: What kind of training did you undergo to become so strong? Are there things one must remember while on the battlefield? Perhaps this kind of information will be useful for future recruits to study.

Hanji: It is. Other titans only act with the motivation of eating human, thus destroying buildings and trampling on humans inadvertently. Their principle of action is also the same, but… There are two exceptions. ——Is it……titan that doesn’t eat human

Hanji: Yes! In other words, Eren’s existence provides clues to the true identity of those guys who attack humans! As long as we grasp this clue and explore along it, the sacrifices of Sony and Bean will not be in vain!

[with these words, Hanji plunged into the experiment on Eren, they fought a secret battle. The interview team visited them late at night,  seeing that they happened to work on design drawings of some mysterious devices.]

Hanji: ah, it’s energetic of you to visit us so late. Unfortunately, these pictures are confidential and the content cannot be made public.

——We understand that. And can we have a word with you during your break?

Hanji: Break? Yeah, I haven’t rested yet, too busy… Will be nagged by Moblit again.

[Hanji laughed and drank the tea that the adjutant had already put around.]

Hanji:… Are you interviewing us for enhancing the image of the Corps? Please write something good for us. When applying for research fees, people at the top keep complaining.

——We will not forget that.

Hanji: Please.  So, what will we talk about?

——According to records, Squad Lead Hanji used to have quite high combat skills. One day, they noticed that the weight of the titan was different from their expectation, so they became interested in the ecology of the titans.  After so much research, do you have your own ideas now?

Hanji: Think about what we talked at the beginning, we are survey soldiers. Since five years ago the Wall Maria was breached,  we have been aiming to regain Wall Maria. Then Eren appeared, our most important task has become to return to the District Shiganshina. However, the most important thing should not be forgotten: our goal is “freedom”, that is, to “seek for” ways to expand the scope of human activities. I just acted as one wing of that.

[Hanji has repeatedly emphasized the word “survey”, in other words, “exploration”. What do other soldiers think about that——

[Moblit Berner, the adjutant who knows Hanji best, said:]

Moblit: Hanji-san is indeed… weird, maybe. But their research, definitely, is one wing among the wings of human’s counterattack.

——What’s your reason for this assertion?

Moblit: it’s, the will of freedom. Most survey soldiers have this in mind… And Hanji-san’s is twice as strong as theirs. Their purposes are the same, but she takes a different road.  So she will see different things through different road from others… If that couldn’t make us subordinates sympathize with her, she would never be a Squad Leader.

——I see. Everyone thinks so and follows her like this. Moblit:Yes. The superior,  no matter how weird their action is, no, I think it should be, because she’s weird, we need to support her.

[On the other hand, for the hero ,contrary to Hanji, who is good at killing titans, what does he see about that?]

——We heard you and Hanji fought together for a long time, didn’t you?

Levi: Just a troublesome but inescapable relationship.  Each other just…survived with good luck. For experienced survey veterans, maybe everyone is like this.

——What kind of person?

Levi: you’ll see, shitty glasses. Talking long, and with thought suddenly flying to the direction of three days after. An abnormal

——That sounds sharp.

Levi:… But if we want to change something, that kind is indispensable. Keen mind indeed, so is Erwin… But that guy has kindness which Erwin doesn’t have.

——Kindness?

Levi: Talking about her love for titans, that kind of things. People in the world said she was crazy…　Since guys like Eren appeared,  what she did would be seen as reasonable.

[“Communicating with someone who have ate comrades, I can’t do such things. With these words, Levi finished his talk. From his tone, we can see the division of labor in the Corps between the two is clear]

Hanji: Ah! This time I really want to take you with me! But secrets are secrets. I’m so sorry!

[It’s one month after Eren Yeager joined the Corps. Before the first survey outside the wall after the recruits joined the regiment, there seems to be a deep meaning in hanji’s words. This gradually revealed after they returned due to the “female titan” incident in District Stohess…]

——Could it be that there are titan-shifters against mankind in the Corps?

Hanji:… Annie is probably not the only one. Annie has no ability to break the wall. So we have to continue our investigation. That wall… Do you see it?

Hanji: Everyone of the Fourth Squad, hurry back to contact!  Organize your class quickly, priority shall be given to leading residents to take refuge, and go find out their intrusion route!

[Hanji gave instructions clearly like a squad leader, holding a mysterious crystal in their hand…]

Among today’s survey soldiers, there are someone who said that if wanting to change, one need to  give up something. If you want to defeat monsters, you must first be incarnated as monsters and abandon human nature.

So did Hanji abandon their human nature? From what we see, it’s not the case.

What Hanji gave up, was other’s recognition, or the desire to be seen as a hero, which is nature for people who  fight with their life. Those soldiers who gambled their lives would naturally aspire to pursue. In exchange, she hold the intense will to explore the truth of the world, which will indeed be a breakthrough for change After hearing the titans appeared, Hanji immediately set out with Eren. The “wings of freedom” on her back , bathed in the light,  came into view like expanded wings in the sun.

PS1: What Levi said about he and Hange: a troublesome but inescapable relationship, its Japanese original is 腐れ縁, suggesting some annoying “fatal bond”. It seems to be often used in some puppy love manga. I find it cute of Levi to be so childish. O(∩_∩)O It also make me smile that he felt her kindness through her love to titans which he dislikes so much.

PS2: Moblit is really like mom. And the journalist’s comment at the end about Hanji seems like a contrast to what Armin said~~~///(^_^).

I finished the translation anyway. In the translation, I call Hanji “she” or “they” freely, hoping that will not confuse Hanji with the survey soldiers. Since I’m not familiar with English, any suggestions for revisions are welcomed.

guess who got to meet Hajime Isayama :)

here’s what we talked about:

he was so kind and humble! he asked why I loved Hanji this much and said he’s glad he drew a character that people can love to that extent (I told him Hanji is like my 3rd parent…) - he said in the beginning, he thought it would be fun to add a weird character to the story, but as events proceeded, Hanji became more and more duty-focused, serious and reliable. i said one of my favorite scenes is when hanji is very tired and shakes in stress in the military hq, he said he’s really surprised i like it and the other Hanji in the sign also liked this scene. i told him i wanted to hug Hanji during that scene and he understood. i believe he really got what Hanji meant to me and that’s why Hanji’s smile is different in the illustration he made me compared to the one he made for the other Hanji fan.i asked if Hanji’s death was planned from the beginning, he said no, he only planned for Armin, Mikasa and Eren’s ending, but the role of the adults in SnK was to guide those three, tell them about the world and transmit their mission onto them. basically Hanji was meant to give out their duty to the next generation. which was why Hanji had to end up that way. i think it’s beautiful and very much like them, believing in their values and something greater than themselves until the very end

お久しぶりです…！

巷では車田先生の画業50周年が盛り上がっているようですね…！

50周年なんて本当に途方もない…。。それでも精力的にどんどん挑戦して、御自分の世界を広げていく車田先生は本当に凄いなと改めて思います。

そんな中、私もちまちま寄稿させて頂いております。

まずは週刊少年チャンピオン24号にて、スピンオフ作家のスペシャルお祝いイラスト、描かせて頂きました。

小さいですが一度ちゃんと描いてみたかったオデッセウスです^^ -

それ�� 月刊チャンピオンRED7月号にて、久々にまた番外編を描かせて頂きました！

こちらは黄金聖闘士になったばかりのカルディアと先輩黄金のマニゴルドという感じのお話です。二人ともちょっと幼いです。

前回のハスガードとエルシドに続いて喧嘩シリーズみたいな感じでしょうか；

本当に未だこうした号に声をかけて頂いてありがたい限りです。

それと、この番外編のラストページにさりげなく告知がありましたが……

そうなんです。今回のREDで情報解禁となりましたが…

『聖闘士星��THE LOST CANVAS冥王神話』

オーディオドラマが今夏、発売決定となりました…！！！！

よ、ようやく告知できます…。。

実は結構前からこのお話は頂いていて、シナリオも今回関わらせて頂いて、脚本の方と何度かやり取りしつつ、とても楽しんで頂ける内容になったんじゃないかなと思います。

ポスターとかも描き下ろしたりしたので、本当に喜んでいただけたらいいなと思います…！

内容も告知ページにある通り、幼サーシャとカルディアコンビにマニゴルドが加わります。アニメではカルディア活躍までは至れなかったので、こちらのオーディオドラマではとても活き活き活躍させて貰えて、私も感無量です…。収録も何度か関東まで行って立ち会わせて頂きましたが、ど迫力で皆様とても素晴らしかったです…（泣）。

なんて今から色々放出してもアレですので…;;近くなりましたらまた詳しくお知らせしたいと思います！

今回告知ページを見て、よ良かった…私の妄想じゃなかった…;;;と一安心です……。。

Isayama Hajime Holds Autograph & Q&A Session in Oyama, Oita on March 3rd, 2018

As announced on his most recent blog entry, Isayama Hajime held his latest autograph session in his hometown of Oyama, Oita, Japan!

The lucky fans who were able to attend shared various photos of his sketches and signatures, as seen above. Separate sessions were held with different groups of fans within a room in the onsen resort where the event took place. Each group had 30 minutes to ask him questions and receive illustrations. A total of 30 chosen participants were divided up into 6 groups of 5.

Isayama’s answers to various fan questions are as below (Note: These are fan accounts):

About Levi and the other characters’ updated looks: Levi’s cape is a new, black one. However, Levi couldn’t adapt to the other changes, so he kept his uniform and blades. Kawakubo Shintaro (Isayama’s editor) didn’t want any visual changes for the characters - he even wanted Eren to stay clean-shaven. However Isayama decided to not “shave” Eren too much.

On Older Eren: 19-year-old Eren’s height is 183cm - the same as Grisha. However, Isayama states that Eren was more like Carla when he was younger. [T/N: Grisha is actually 182cm, so Isayama may have misremembered here. Zeke however is 183cm.]

On Erwin’s Burial: The Survey Corps had to move on quickly to fight further after Battle of Shiganshina, but Levi later returned and brought back Erwin’s skeletonized body with him/buried him. Though a lot of soldiers perished, there was a special memorial service for Erwin.

On Horoscopes: Neither Eren nor Jean’s birthdays were decided through horoscope characterizations/stereotypes.

On Levi’s Father: Isayama has no plans to draw Levi’s father in the manga. He’s not anyone significant - Isayama thinks he was probably just a short guy.

On Levi’s Cape (Again): The question was what Isayama thought of fans thinking that the cape belonged to Erwin. Isayama states that there is a sense that Levi dyed the green cape into a black color. He doesn’t know whose cape it was, but if it belonged to Erwin, Isayama doesn’t think the size would’ve worked for Levi.

On New Character Designs (Again): Why didn’t Levi’s change much compared to the 104th? Isayama says he wanted to show that the 104th trainees belong to the “Smartphone Generation,” but Levi decided to stay with his “Flip Phone.” Levi doesn’t understand the younger generation, and he is turning into an old man (Literally “Oji-san”).

On Erwin: Will Erwin appear in the manga again, even if just for one panel? Isayama says he thinks there are still chances, such as in flashbacks.

On Levi’s Eyesight: Levi’s vision is measured at 2.0

Hardcore Eren: If Eren goes to karaoke, what type of songs will he sing? Isayama: “Metal.”

General Eren Facts: Besides now standing at 183cm, Eren is also a heavyweight drinker (Doesn’t get drunk easily) and good at cleaning. He is now influenced by a lot of the memories he retained, and he determinedly chopped off his own leg before entering Marley. His irises are a grey-ish color and his bloodtype is B.

Toying with His Editor:  “Will you be happy with developing the future plot similar to how you drew the story so far?” Isayama: “Yes! But I want to see the readers anticipating [the upcoming plot].” Kawakubo: "Like he said, I’ve been saying the same thing! Everyone is looking forward to it.” Isayama: “…Then I’ll change the story.”

Eren & Elysium: When Eren asked Falco “Is that person…a girl?”, he was under the influence of other people’s memories (Possibly Grisha in that moment). The new Survey Corps uniform was inspired by Matt Damon’s external armor/exoskeleton in Elysium (Below). When asked about the members going to the restroom, Isayama: “It would be better to open a hole in that design…”

Lots More Information: Isayama on Eren’s bloodtype - “Because this is a fantasy series, maybe there are not only 4 blood types. But then again, are they even counted as human…?” [T/N: This somewhat contradicts the earlier fan account where Isayama said outright that Eren’s bloodtype was B…]. “What will Levi think of Eren’s current look?” Isayama (Without hesitation): “Dirty.” [T/N: As in unclean, of course] “Was it Eren’s own idea to grow his hair long?” Isayama: “Right now he is in a state where he is no longer paying attention to how people view him, so he just let it grow out.” “Did Eren consider the fact that he will be infiltrating Marley when he grew out his hair?” Isayama: “Since he was supposed to be a hospitalized patient, he actually should’ve kept a cleaner hairstyle.” [T/N: A little vague, but this basically sounds like Eren didn’t mean to grow his hair out as a disguise] “Were there any cases of when you let the characters’ behavior and dialogue develop organically?”
 Isayama: “In general, I let the characters evolve on their own. I don’t remember things after I draw them. I can’t look at my storyboard calmly right after I finish them, so Bakku-san (Kawakubo) is the one who reads them objectively.” “Following up on that answer: Bakku-san will immediately read your storyboard (In less than one day) after you submit them to him?” Isayama: “Since he has been waiting for the storyboard to arrive, in most cases he will read them in one or two hours after I give them to him.” “Did they (Eren and Levi) resolve the confusion of when Eren said ‘midget old man (chibi oyaji)’? Or did Eren apologize?” Isayama: “Levi is not concerned about being referred to that way. But after Eren said it and Levi thought about the moniker by himself later, he seemed hurt. He probably thought “So Eren sees me like that….” “Any plan to draw the four-year period back on Paradis island?”
 Isayama: “That’s something I can’t tell you for now. (Kawakubo also chimed in here and said: “Isayama-sensei won’t tell you anything, but please look forward…”) “Kenny said he will never go to a brothel. Does Levi think the same way?” Isayama: “Because it’s an environment that Levi had been part of since childhood, it seems like he considers prostitution as just another ordinary job.” “What is Eren’s current body weight?” Isayama: “If I have to answer that now - he indeed gained some weight because he has grown taller. However, he has a rather slender body.”

Naration: The place that the Survey Corps decided to take shelter from the rain was in an old castle that had a strong structure, regardless.  The echoing sound of rainfall beating against the large windows created a noisy atmosphere. There is someone busy and noisy searching for books, is Hange.

H: (random noise) ehhhhhehheheh yeahhhh~~~~ A mountain of treasures!! I hope I can read these ancient writing!!! ahaaaaa!! Why it still hasn’t been decode!!!!

L: Oi shitty glasses, it takes my time to look for you. (Walking toward Hange) Did you let your squad members free to roam the place, leisurely?

H: Ah, Levi? That’s not the case because Moblit is taking care of everyone’s concerns. He’s an excellent and valuable subordinate, isn’t he~? Anyway, Look!! This place seems to be a library, these picture scrolls, books, books and BOOKS!!! yaaa~~ it makes me thirst for knowlegde~!! eh? oo~~oo~~ (grab a ladder)

L: No matter what you do, just don’t let your subordinate worry about you

H: ehiii~~ihiiii~~~~~ (climbing the ladder)

L: Oi! What are you doing?

H: Ah~~~Just something over here, I want to take that book~~ So I am climbing  the ladder~~~ e~~he~~e~~ Yeah..this one..~~ Eh? AH? AHHH—-!!!

L: tsk (Its seems like he rush and catch her)

L: Don’t worry. (Walk away) It wouldn’t become any weirder. Honestly, you should pay more attention to your surroundings.

H: That’s rude~ I am paying attention~ sigh~ This book here, for example… This old castle that exists inside the walls, there are many books and stored supplies written with letters that we can’t read right now.Why? (Talking about the book)

L: Stop your theory, I am not talking about your vision. After all, I know your head is sharp.

Furthermore, in the unlikely event that Eren transforms into a titan and busts through the roof, there are a good number of footholds on the tower for our maneuvering equipment. L: …you are right. I got it.
