Art Tips | Line Weight
—
Hello, I didn’t make it in time but I still wanted to share this short guide on applying varying line weight onto a drawing.
In my first year of art college, drawing class was like a treasure trove of new tips and knowledge which I looked forward to every week. I used to only draw either very lightly overall or with the same intensity and no variation in my lines.
But one of the first things introduced to us in drawing class was how to vary our lines and mark making to capture light and shadow through just our line drawings. I never noticed the big difference it made to drawing only in a line with the same weight or which was uniform in pressure. I saw how it added more depth and fluidity to the character or subject making them less flat and stiff overall.
So ever since then I have tried to observe more and make thoughtful decisions of where I can play with the pressure of my lines while drawing.
Hope this is helpful! :)

I need help with drawing the body
It’s all about body type and how you want your character to be portrayed. I’m not too sure if you are referring to the body types of SU but these were a few references I used as a guide when I first started out. Plus, these pictures can explain them a whole lot better than I can.
Poses are the worst so here’s a bunch of those as well.
All of these references can honestly be applied to anything you draw.
My personally drawn reference for HANDS is here if you need that as well.
I hope this helps!

I found a magazine full of models and decided to do a little study with one of them. Of course this isn’t perfect, I was still starting off and as I do recall I did this around October.
I will be redoing this since I have gotten much much better! A lot from this study bothers me so expect it to be done soon.

These pages are the third and fourth in my sketchbook for my studies.
This is more of me practicing to memorize the proportions by the head-to-head rule (as I call it) which is where a female is 7-7.5 heads tall (head to ankle) and a male is 7.5-8 heads tall (head to ankle).

My journey to understand human anatomy began in September, I had been away from drawing passionately for months due to seasonal depression but I had promised myself that this year would be different.
These are two pages from my sketchbook that consist of studies I had done to start out my journey to understand human anatomy.

I love your art!! but how do you make it look so fluid and natural? I'm an okay artist but all my characters look stiff, even if my form and proportions are right. thank you
Thank you so much! Here are some tips in making your drawings more fluid and natural!
- Understand the body and know how it works, draw a bunch of anatomy sketches, just keep on drawing the human body! We all need to start somewhere! :)
- Draw with your arm, not your hand. Movement from the arm creates great gestures and lines that radiate movement cause you have more room.
- Draw over your first sketch and improve upon.
- Don’t make the body symmetrical, it looks rigid and weird. Add a mix of curves and straight lines.
- Have a dominating line of action which guides the entire body, has a center of weight. It creates more movement.
Gestures are really great in making your drawings more fluid because it’s so limited and you’re looking at the big picture itself instead of the tiny details.
Good luck and best wishes to your art! Practice a lot and keep on drawing!
