The idea that rural communities wouldn't benefit from public transit of some form is so fucking stupid. There was a guy in my hometown who would hitch hike 15 miles to the grocery store because he was blind that everyone knew and knew to offer rides to if they saw him. You know what else would have fixed this, been more efficient, and helped other disabled people, seniors, and people whose cars got repoed?
A fucking bus.

I saw this on Facebook and had to look it up. It really happened, albeit the details are different. From Homesteading Space: The Skylab Story:
"On the evening of MD-46, I finally played the trick that had been in work for over two month," said Garriott. "It even had the flight controllers puzzled for twenty-five years! My objective was to pretend that my wife, Helen, had come up to Skylab to bring us a hot meal, even though this was an obvious impossibility. Here is how the scheme worked. I recorded her voice on my small hand-held tape recorder before flight, pretending to have a brief conversation with a Capcom, with time gaps for his replies. The Capcom would be my only accomplice, but his role would be carefully disguised.
It was also necessary to have some recent event mentioned to validate the currency of the dialogue, so it would seem it could not have been recorded before fight. The short dialogue is printed below in its entirety. I knew that both Bob Crippen and Karl Henize were going to be Capcoms for Skylab, so they were brought into the planning, given the script and rehearsed on their timing. They kept the short script on a piece of paper in their billfolds, awaiting the right moment.
"For our flight in August-September, there would be many occasions of natural disasters involving forest fires or hurricanes, which would be widely known throughout the United States. So a few comments about one or the other were made on the tape. This led to four different scripts being recorded, one for each of the two Capcoms and one each for the two natural events. I would play the tape on the normal air-to-ground voice link with my wife's recorded voice and the Capcom would respond as if totally surprised by the female interloper."
Near the end of one period of voice contact Garriott said to the ground, "I'll have something for you on the next pass, Bob." Crippen replied, "Roger that, Owen." Then quietly and surreptitiously, he reviewed the brief script that had been in his pocket for all these weeks. Soon after coming into voice range, the ground heard this voice on the standard air-to-ground link:
Skylab (a female voice): "Gad, I don't see how the boys manage to get rid of the feedback berween these speakers.... Hello Houston, how are you reading me down there? (s sec. pause) Hello Houston, are you reading Skylab?"
Capcom: "Skylab, this is Houston. We heard you alright, but had difficulty recognizing your voice. Who do we have on the line up there?"
Skylab: "Hello Houston. Roger. Well I haven't talked with you for a while. Isn't that you down there, Bob? This is Helen, here in Skylab. The boys hadn't had a good home cooked meal in so long, I thought I'd bring one up. Over"
Capcom: "Roger, Skylab. Someone's gotta be pulling my leg, Helen. Where are you?"
Skylab: "Right here in Skylab, Bob. Just a few orbits ago we were looking down on those forest fires in California. The smoke sure covers a lot of territory, and, oh boy, the sunrises are just beautiful! Oh oh..... See you later, Bob. I hear the boys coming up here and I'm not supposed to be on the radio."
"Then quiet returned to the voice link, but we were told later, Bob Crippen had lots of questions coming his way in the Control Center," Garriott said. "What was going on? Where was this voice coming from? Bob must have been a very good actor, because he claimed complete ignorance and innocence of how it happened. Everyone heard it coming down on the air-to-ground loop. The whole two-way conversation sounded like a perfectly normal dialogue. No breaks or gaps, and they all heard Bob respond in real time. Could I have recorded Helen's voice on a 'family conversation' from our home? Yes, but there was no recent one. How would she have known about the fires, or who was to be on Capcom duty and how could she respond to Bob's comments in real time, as everyone could hear?
"No one ever worked out how this was accomplished. Finally, at our twenty-fifth reunion celebration in Houston in 1998, and with many of the flight directors and controllers present and still with no clue as to how it was done, I described it all as above. My prejudiced opinion is that this was the best 'gotcha' ever perpetrated on our friendly flight controllers!"
Crippen recalled: "That was kind of a fun trick. There was head rubbing.
Everybody in the MOCR, or the control room, was looking like, What the hell is going on?' We did a good job. It was fun. Working those missions got to be tough. We did all kinds of things to try to come up with levity. That was a nice one that the crew got that the ground control didn't know about."

Here's my two cents - it's not that other relationships are less important. It's simply that "ship" doesn't necessarily refer to those, because that was not the context of the term's origin and that is not the meaning that has followed the term on down the years.
And to be fair, I have seen "ship" used to refer to other types of relationships, but doing so requires qualifiers for clarity. "I ship them platonically" vs. "I ship them." The latter does not get people asking well, in what way do you ship them? because absent any indication to the contrary, "ship" is simply assumed to be romantic. If you look at a piece of media with an adult character and a child character and you love the headcanon that these two have a delightful parent/child dynamic and the one has adopted the other, and you say "I ship adult A with child B," people will assume you mean romantically or sexually unless you add "as family" at the end. And possibly even then!
Basically, I do think the term is beginning to broaden, but if you want to use it to refer to your enthusiasm and not something romantic, it is still necessary to clarify in order to avoid confusion. "I headcanon these two as family" and "I ship these two platonically" are clear phrases. "I ship these two" is also clear, if and only if you're referring to something romantic and/or sexual.
tl;dr: It's not a commentary on importance, it's simply that this term does still mean something specific.
Whenever I post about aromantic readings and platonic relationships in fandom, I get a handful of people upset that I use “shipping” to mean enthusiasm for a romantic and/or sexual dynamic. Now I know was originally short for “relationship,” but felt that colloquially that’s gone out of use, but now I’m curious:

Two seemingly contradictory beliefs that we actually must strive to hold simultaneously:
You don't owe anyone anything
Meaning: you do not have to make yourself suffer for the convenience of others
We owe each other everything
Meaning: we could not survive without each other and everything we do to help another is crucial to ensuring our own continued survival
You don't need to be a doormat, but also don't get comfortable slamming the door when you have the resources to extend a hand instead.

"I sort fics by kudos and only kudos on stories with high kudos counts, why aren't there more stories with high kudos, I ran out of things to read." You're part of the problem.
"Authors artificially inflate comment counts by thanking people, I can't find anything with a real comment count to read." No they fucking are not, they're grateful for engagement.
"I can't read anything under 100k." That's the majority of fics you're ignoring, most novels aren't even that long.
"I don't have time to look for the incredibly rare diamond in the rough, so I won't read anything below a certain amount of kudos, comments, and hits." Those fics are popular because people gave them a chance and then snobs like you found them.
"I won't read anthing with a single typos." You made typos in that sentence, get off your high horse.
"One singular author didn't thank me for commenting, I'm never commenting on any fic again so I don't get burned." You're punishing people because someone didn't give you engagement they don't owe you that they might not have seen.
"This fic is three months old, it's so old, it doesn't matter if I comment or kudos, it's old." Fics do not have expiration dates, comment and kudos.
You're killing your fandoms with your snobbish behaviors.

scrunglebunny time yaaaaay!!!
so my colleagues and i are apparently world-class experts at keeping these things healthy in captivity, which *does* explain why i never see them as exhibits anywhere, but is also a bit baffling to me because like, they're not difficult??? sure, they need stable water parameters and a large sandbed, but so does a stingray, and i can't fathom a professional aquarist having trouble maintaining water params. that's just something an aquarist should be doing as a matter of course, regardless of what they're keeping. a blue hippo tang is waaaay more delicate, and people successfully raise those all the time.
the other thing i hear is that it's impossible to get them to eat, but i don't buy that either. LOOK at this little guy. look how jazzed he is for dinnertime. he stands there all stanced up on his tippies with his nose against the glass every day waiting for me. i've only had him for two weeks but he'll try anything i offer him (and i offer a big variety of foods) because he knows i give out tasty presents to all the good babies. and he knows he's a good baby!!!
so people ask me what's the secret and i'm like, idk be nice to them??? are y'all out there *not* being nice to your fish???
baffling.

I have three jobs that are all unstable. I live in complete poverty as a sole provider to a family of three in the global south. I am on maintenance medicine for hypocalcemia, type II diabetes and hypothyroidism for the rest of my life. My mother is a full time wheelchair user with very low movement, my father is managing a chronic kidney disease, and my sister is autistic with a low frustration threshold. I am their sole provider, and now dealing with nerve damage post surgery- a quarter of my face, and nearly my entire neck has not healed properly- its numb and painful and makes it hard to work for me as it limits my own movement somewhat. If you've ever taken joy from my art or little posts, I would love your help. I am grateful for this second chance at life, I would like to stay healthy and keep living. Thank you so much!
