Daehyun drummed his fingertips on the scarred top of the desk, thinking of a way to escape. The silence is ringing through his ears making him more anxious and scared. A small growling sound interfered his thoughts. He lifted his gaze to the girl beside him and chuckled.

“Ne, Daehyun, wanna get out of here and go hunt some food?” Daehyun stared at the flustered girl as she tries to conceal her embarrassment away. Further delay is futile since it’s hunger they’re talking about. Daehyun, a glutton himself, knows the feeling of hunger and wanting to replenish it with good food. He nodded, gesturing for her to lead the way.

“So from what guild are you?” Amber asked as Daehyun lifted the lamp from the table. “I haven’t seen you around these parts so I’m gonna assume you’re not in IO.” Daehyun cleared his throat preparing to answer.

The light from the lamp brushed up against the wooden floor, and then spilled over the door that leads outside of the room. Daehyun’s arm reached into the light to withdraw the latch, and they jostled into the dark corridor. It was not actually that dark; the sun is still up but even a slightest taint of darkness makes Daehyun feel disturb and terrified.

“I’m from… Trojan.” The young boy’s face lightened up, “The guild of the perfect embodiment of their ideals, bravery, wit, strength, honor and spirit.” Daehyun’s lamp carved a soft round circle through the corridor, bringing focus to each scratch and nails on their path.

Daehyun emitted a low whistle through his teeth as Amber grabbed his hand. “Food!” She barked earning a confused look from Daehyun.

“Noona?” He called for her attention but chuckled to himself as he saw her nose twitching. He stared ahead and caught smell of the food. “Food!!” He dashed towards the source of smell dragging along the girl with him. A hand tightly gripped on the latter’s hand.

Now completely awake, Daehyun shifted his weight in the couch, toying with the lamp that glowed on the table at his elbow. He found the quiet strangely foreboding. It roared in his ears, demanding his attention, where loud horses would have passed by unheeded. He was accustomed to being kept awake by the whispering of his anxieties, but here the whispers sounded even louder in the pervasive, disquieting silence.

He wiped a hand over his face, crisscrossed by pale red marks where it had been pressed against the back of the couch. The details of the dream receded, leaving their emotional content but not their substance. Vague, terrifying shapes bending over him, long ropes reaching down, chasing after him…. Or perhaps they had been snakes?

He gazed around the small sitting room, its benign froms seeming like skinds draped over something else, something menacing. As his mind struggled for focus, the borderland between dream and reality felt slippery and imprecise. He must have dozed off in the couch after stealing some food.
