originally sore-thumb marcia who became all popular after being taken under bev’s wing!!

sure, she’s always been ‘popular’ but that’s because she grew up being best friends with bob so bob has never left her out. but she’s the type of popular kid that everyone is like “how is she popular??”

she’s always been a know it all and sort of nerdy. she corrects people a lot and it annoys her when people don’t use proper grammar.

bev and marcia were in the same friend group but they didn’t really get super close until freshman year when marcia decided she wanted to impress trip. she went to cherry first but cherry said to “just be yourself” and obviously that’s great advice, but marcia wanted more. so she went to bev, the coolest girl she knew.

bev helped her a ton. but she didn’t change marcia. she told marcia that she should never change herself for anyone, but it doesn’t hurt to control some things.

like, she didn’t need to correct everyone all the time. and sure, it was hard at first, but marcia became much more well liked. but sometimes she couldn’t hold it back. especially with dallas who was always saying incorrect stuff.

marcia kept going to bev for advice, which ended up strengthening their friendship. and maybe that’s why marcia quickly follows after bev in jft against cherry.

chet hates the name sodapop. god he hates it so much. he wants to punch whoever says the name around him (is that normal? is it normal to feel so violent after hearing the mention of someone you hate?)

his body tenses up at the mere mention of sodapop's name. the memories from the previous summer flashing through his mind like a movie sequence. the love, the excitement, the jealousy, and the anger. it all comes back in a rush.

don’t even get him started on when he sees darrel. he knew darrel didn’t like him at first. he tries to forget how darrel played football with him in the backyard. (and darrel tries to forget how it reminds him of playing with paul in high school) he tried to forget how ponyboy one time asked him for homework help. now darrel and ponyboy only ever look at him with hatred.

yet chet still gravitated towards sodapop, even another summer later. maybe that’s why he always got all up in sodapop’s face. maybe that’s why he immediately runs to fight sodapop in the rumble. maybe if sodapop punched him hard enough he could forget about ever liking him. ever liking boys.

and maybe that’s why he didn’t protest to jumping ponyboy, not once, but twice. maybe it’s because he saw the fourteen year old sodapop he played baseball with in the face of ponyboy.

maybe the reason he kept pushing ponyboy into the water was because his face began to distort in a mix of ponyboy and himself. maybe because in the water he saw the fourteen year old chet who was accused of liking boys by chief baker. maybe he wanted to try and kill that little boy. maybe that would make those feelings go away.

maybe if he yelled at anyone who mentioned the name sodapop it would all go away. maybe liking boys would never be a problem. maybe he never even liked boys. he was probably just confused.

he knew that was a lie.

in reference to this post (my original chetsoda hcs), they go on a date to the diner both blissfully unaware that the other is hoping and praying they interpret it as a date

chet telling himself over and over in his head that he’s just taking soda out to eat to thank him for fixing brill’s car

but he has butterflies in his stomach and he can’t stop grinning every time soda smiles at him

soda who insists they split a milkshake for the wellbeing of chet’s bank account

but his cheeks are red and his eyes are shining and he’s felt this feeling before

they talk for hours about every aspect of their lives, chet’s asking about soda’s brothers, soda’s asking chet what it’s like having the chief of police for a father

they don’t realise how long they’ve been at the diner until people from the drive-in start coming in, and they decide they should probably leave before their respective friends see them together

chet walks soda home, and their fingers are brushing against each other’s

neither of them make a move, but neither of them pull their hand away, and i think they both just know what’s going on between them

soda quietly asks chet if he wants to stay the night, and chet immediately agrees, with bright red cheeks

soda giving chet some of darry’s pyjamas to sleep in when it becomes incredibly clear that chet won’t fit into his at all

they talk to each other all night about really small details about themselves, like where soda got his tattoos, or how chet found out about his peanut allergy

and the whole time they’re just watching each other so closely, taking in every detail of each other’s face

i saw them fighting in the rumble and i thought about them but then i thought i was #alone and then marley posted about them and i was like “oh yeah im not alone thank you for opening the gates marley”

very few thoughts hcs on him rn bcs i havent really mapped him out in my brain bcs kcso trip and sean trip are two different people in my mind LMFAO

- okay so i said that i think he lives with his grandparents (on his mom’s side) but the reason i think is because his dad is like not in their life a few years after melvin was born and his mom went into rehab like two years ago

- even before he just lived with his grandparents, it was their house they lived in

- it’s a very sore subject for him and a big stressor

- hence why he fights, it helps get rid of that stress

- he’s been fighting since like he was 10-11 because he was always so jealous that the other kids got to go on fishing trips and stuff with their dads (cue percy’s song verse in ‘their sign’ from the lightning theif musical)

- he’s a very good brother to melvin though. you were making fun of him for not having a dad? somehow you’re limping over to melvin and apologizing the next day!!

- the nickname trip just kind of given to him

- he fell at recess one day and chet laughed and was like “HAHA TERRANCE DIPP TRIPPED🫵🫵” and then he’s like “wait…”

- met marcia in freshman year science class and was immediately head-over-heels

- took her to all the dances and asked her to be his girlfriend at one of them

- he gives her new flowers every time he sees her and at one point marcia’s just swimming in them like 💐🧍‍♀️💐

- he doesn’t tell her about the extent of his fighting because one time she voiced that she wasn’t a big fan of violence

- he’s very sweet with marcia🙁 if you look at the background you can see all their little interactions and it’s super cute actually

- trip and cherry are best friends in my mind actually and you can’t take it away from me

- he’s a defensive back😁

PARRY vs. CHETPOP

While Darry and Paul were already best friends and so them constantly around each other never raised any eyebrows from the people around them, Chet and Sodapop are supposed to hate each other (and sorta do) so the only time they see each other is in secret. That means they never really developed an actual friendship. Whereas Paul and Darry were once in love (and despite everything, still are), Chet and Soda are together because of lust and, while they both crave an intimate connection, they don’t know how to actually talk to each other like Darry and Paul, who knew absolutely everything about each other, could.

i think the way that darry and soda mainly refer to pony as ‘our brother’ in throwing in the towel is so beautiful but i don’t know how to formulate it into words. and the hopeless way that darry says “what if they lock our brother away” makes me think that he’s thinking about the possibility of pony turning into dally. it’s unlikely, but the thought lingers because prison does change a person.
