Miscellaneous (Inquisition) - Charter in Minrathous
Tumblr media
A Minrathous paper with one item circled:
Prices for lyrium may soon rise higher than the Archon's Palace after recent negotiations with the Orzammar embassy broke down into fighting. A representative for the dwarves claimed that Tevinter negotiators were Venatori and suggested that their minds had been poisoned by red lyrium. Tevinter officials deny use of red lyrium and insist that it is not used in any official magical business.
A note written in the margins:
Lace,
Francesca and I made things a little harder for the Venatori, with lyrium tougher to come by and the red variant officially banned. I hope you're doing all right with your own lyrium-related issues. Stay safe.
–Charter

The Dwarven People - A Letter Home
Tumblr media
An unsent letter from Harding to her mother:
My dearest ma,
I'm writing to you from Minrathous. In Tevinter. I'm in Tevinter! Isn't that amazing? Yes, there are power-hungry mages and slavers and cultists, but the city is so much more than that. You should see the magical lights!
I've mentioned this before, but I don't really work for the Inquisition the way I used to. It's complicated. I do miss it. I miss Skyhold and my friends there. But Charter still keeps in contact and I'm working with Varric doing something really important. I wish I could tell you more. Soon, though! We're very close to finding the person we've been tracking. Once that's over, I'll come home and you'll get to hear the whole story! Maybe I'll even be in time for the sheep-shearing!
Lots of love, Lace

Mourn Watch - Complications in the Veil
Tumblr media
The Veil. Our immutable, eternal barrier against the Fade.
Or so we thought. There has recently been a great weakening in the Veil, thanks to a confluence of magic in the South we've yet to understand. What scant information we have paints a chilling picture. The Veil may be undone, permanently, either in large parts or as a whole.
We cannot give way to panic. Should this threat be real, someone must be prepared to answer. If the Veil falls, thousands of lives, all we hold dear, will be swept away. I cannot say what would take their place.
–Notes from a lecture by Emmrich Volkarin in 9:42 Dragon to a council of Chantry scholars, nobility, and Nevarran mages

Dragon Age: The Veilguard - Codex Entry
World of Thedas - Fen'Harel: The Dread Wolf
Tumblr media
There is precious little we know about Fen'Harel, for they say he did not care for our people. Elgar'nan and Mythal created the world as we know it, Andruil taught us the Ways of the Hunter, Sylaise and June gave us fire and crafting, but Fen'Harel kept to himself and plotted the betrayal of all the gods. And after the destruction of Arlathan, when the gods could no longer hear our prayers, it is said that Fen'Harel spent centuries in a far corner of the earth, giggling madly and hugging himself in glee.
The legends say that before the fall of Arlathan, the gods we know and revere fought an endless war with others of their kind. There is not a hahren among us who remembers these others. Only in dreams do we hear whispered the names of Geldauran and Daern'thal and Anaris, for they are the Forgotten Ones, the gods of terror and malice, spite and pestilence. In ancient times, only Fen'Harel could walk without fear among both our gods and the Forgotten Ones, for although he is kin to the gods of the People, the Forgotten Ones knew of his cunning ways, and saw him as one of their own.
And that is how Fen'Harel tricked them. Our gods saw him as brother, and they trusted him when he said they must keep to the heavens while he arranged a truce. And the Forgotten Ones trusted him also when he said he would arrange for the defeat of our gods, if only the Forgotten Ones would return to the abyss for a time. They trusted Fen'Harel, and they were all of them betrayed. And Fen'Harel sealed them away so they could never again walk among the People.
–From "The Tale of Fen'Harel's Triumph", as told by Gisharel, Keeper of the Ralaferin clan of the Dalish elves

The Elven People - A Meditation on Grief
Tumblr media
They say grief is a knife. Sharp. Painful. Immediate.
But grief isn't a knife.
It's a stone. Choked down and kept down.
It erodes. Time makes it smaller, lesser.
You forget about it. It passes into memory. Where you used to feel its pain, now you feel nothing.
But sometimes it turns. A note. A flower. A smell.
The smoothly worn edges retreat. Twist away.
What comes now is as sharp and jagged as ever.
It cuts anew. It's worn anew.
Then it all happens again.
And unlike a stone, there is always another jagged edge.

Shadow Dragons - Neve's Case Notes: The Viper
Tumblr media
More new faces in Dock Town looking for work. Say they're refugees from the front, but the scars tell a different story.
The shutdown of that textile mill north of Asariel was all over the broadsheets. Story says sold to new owners, but word on the street is that it's another successful slave rebellion. In just the past year – the South Nocen Shipyard, the caravan moving slaves to Ventus, the mines in the Hundred Pillars. Perhaps more, if they kept it quiet.
If you know who to ask, and you ask about the rebellions, you'll hear about the Viper. They say he arrives, helps the slaves, finds them new lives, then disappears. I like the sound of it.
Slave rebellions used to get put down easy. Something's changed. Is it just this mysterious Viper? Or is there something else going on here?

Shadow Dragons - Neve's Case Notes: Tarquin
Tumblr media
Met the man shadowing me. Name's Tarquin. Got tired of his antics, hid and doubled back to approach him from behind. If he was surprised, he hid it well. Said he wanted to know if I could be trusted before he spoke to me. I pointed out that my trustworthiness aside, his methods gave me no reason to trust him. He conceded.
He wanted to know if I had a lead on the red lyrium potions coming through the docks. He'd seen evidence of a cover-up in templar reports and wanted to compare notes. Might be able to make real progress from this.
Rana's heard of him. A soldier from Ventus who quit the military and took a place with the templars in Minrathous. Keeps his head down, mostly deals with paperwork in the archives. Got the impression he isn't well-liked by his superiors.
Explains the side job.

The Elven People - A Lighthouse Spirit?
Tumblr media
I'm starting to wonder if the Lighthouse might be alive.
There's almost a...heartbeat, I'd call it. A rhythm to how things happen and move.
I asked the professor about it, and he told me about something called a genius loci – the spirit of a place. Spirits are attracted to emotion, right? And a place that has a lot of emotion tied up with it? That's going to attract an especially strong spirit.
And there's a feeling – like something's watching us. But not in a bad way. More comforting than anything. And that's nice.
I want to see if I can speak to it. Not sure how I'd do that. Going to ask the professor about it.

Shadow Dragons - Neve's Case Notes: Wisps
Tumblr media
It's not the room. Easy to rule out. I moved my stuff, but they followed. Back where we started.
What are they after? They focus on the notes. Sometimes they'll circle a bauble or two, but mostly the notes.
Why?
Curiosity? Wisps are known for it. Emmrich's got a paper or three on the topic. And lucky me, I've got a desk full of mysteries and other people's secrets.
So, say they like an unanswered question – is that it? Is it all the notes or certain cases in particular? Their interest seems random, but is it? What's the pattern? They avoid anything related to the Opal Rose case – a coincidence? Too easy.
Then again. Wisps.
Bellara asked if this was a real case and I was keeping official notes.
Yes.

The Elven People - Archive Spirit
Tumblr media
They're archive spirits. Or at least, that's what we call them. But they're not spirits.
Well, not really. Spirits can think. They can act on their own. But these ones don't do that. They have no free will. At least, to start with.
If you have a lot of magic, though – and I mean, a LOT of magic – you can kind of force them into shape. Give them a mind, or something close. Do that and they can remember pretty much anything you tell them. For as long as you need.
Only supposed to be seven, though. One for each elven god. And they're all destroyed. So where did this one come from? And who did it belong to?

Lords of Fortune - Script for Shathann
Tumblr media
I've been talking to people from Tevinter and– - Bad.
A trans woman talked to me about gender. She's a mage– - Worse.
You know how we're not really in the Qun but also not really Rivaini? I'm that but for gender. - Weak.
Hey. This might make you angry– - She'll argue.
I've been talking to people (DO NOT SAY TEVINTER) about gender stuff. Do you know what being non-binary is? I've been thinking. Maybe if it's okay– - Ugh. No. Maevaris said not to say it like a question or like I'm asking permission.
I identify as AM non-binary. It means I don't feel like– - Weak. Uncertain.
I'm non-binary. It means I am not a man or a woman. I use "they" instead of "she" now. - Short. Clear. Should work.

Antivan Crows - Lucanis's Logbook. 5
Tumblr media
Dawn: - Search the library
Mid-morning: - Discussion with Neve (archives in Minrathous)
Midday: - Discussion with Emmrich (Mourn Watch records) - Discussion with Harding (Inquisition associates)
My reading on possession has become lax over time, but that will be rectified.
Reading list: - Abominations, a thorough study including records of conversation taken from 9:10 Dragon to 9:23 Dragon by Enchanter Kidara, of the Ostwick Circle - The Possessed and What We Don't Realise from The Weekly Truth in Minrathous, author name unknown - The Kirkwall Incidents, author name withheld - On Envy and (Spite trusts nothing to do with envy demons) - The Wardens have dealt with possession. Would their records on the subject survive anywhere?

Antivan Crows - Lucanis's Logbook. 4
Tumblr media
Late afternoon: - Exercises - Discussions with Taash (Crows)
Evening: - Inventory with Bellara - Supper preparations
Bellara has ambitious plans for future meals at the Lighthouse, which she leaves to the two of us. I've been tasked with suggesting substitutions where ingredients are not available. Some of her own suggestions were rather inventive and would create a balanced flavor profile. Viago speaks often on the art of masking certain tastes. Perhaps I should set up a meeting so they can compare notes; perhaps enemies of House De Riva won't last much longer.

(The handwriting abruptly alters) When did this start? I drifted off. It was after I spoke to Harding. He can't have been here long. The candle was out, but not much lower than when I lit it. It may still be evening. Or he blew it out and it's been hours.
I'll ask Emmrich or Neve for an estimate of the time.
