oh hey we have polls now thats right HEY AMERICANS
THERE WILL BE A FOLLOW UP POLL IM GONNA REBLOG THIS
#incheresting#i think it’s normal in the sense that it doesn’t seem to be uncommon where i live#but it’s not something i personally would do#my dogs are crated when home alone#sometimes they’re unsupervised in the yard in the sense that like. i am doing smth inside and they are outside without me#but i know they’re out there and can recall them if they start barking#i don’t like the idea of them being outside totally unsupervised for a variety of reasons. makes me very anxious to think about lol#crating them gives me peace of mind and keeps them safe#reasons include#they get very distressed about being outside on their own if they can’t get back inside#fixate on neighbour’s dog agressive german shepherd that barks at them through the fence#birds of prey aren’t uncommon and these dogs weigh 6-7lbs#don’t want them rehearsing fixating and barking#live in an area of extreme temps and sometimes the doggy door freezes shut while they are outside#which is fine when i’m home and can let them back in but obviously not ideal when i’m away#i do have a covered patio and lots of toys and plenty of fresh water for them outside but it gets ridiculously hot and incredibly cold here

A quick and dirty on why retractable leashes are the devil:
1- Your dog is 15 feet away... do you know what it just ate? Did you see the squirrel it killed before it did? How, exactly, do you plan to keep the dog out of the road?
2- If the dog gets a good running start it can pull the leash out of your hand. And if you suddenly hit the stop toggle you can harm your dog.
3- Those leashes are very sharp at speed. They can lacerate both you or your pet.
4- Congratulations, your dog just created a Gordian Knot around you, that tree, and an errant child.
5- That dog down the street is reactive to other dogs based on proximity. Your dog is now 25 feet closer to that dog.
6- Your dog just took a dump 20 feet out in a field of tall grass. Have fun playing hunt the poop.
#skill issue that literally every person who walks a dog on a retractable leash has apparently#i’ve never witnessed anyone use one in a way that i would consider safe or responsible#all time most hated was a reactive dog at my old apartment complex who owners would walk on a retractable leash#i would do everything to avoid them with my dogs usually by turning around and going the opposite way#but one time i had no choice and opted to cross a semi busy street#can u imagine what happened next#reactive dog ran right into the street bc the retractable lead wasn’t locked and owner wasn’t paying attention#my dogs are also reactive but i had them under control until suddenly a much larger dog was barrelling across the street barking#barking and growling and lunging at them#and then owner had the audacity to blame my dogs#like girl. i am across the street my dogs were focused on me and they’re on 6ft leashes#i am not the problem if ur dog gets hit by a car. you are#same dog snapped at me in the mail room bc he was on the retractable lead and owner wasn’t paying attention#i was literally as far away as i could get but that dog sure did close the gap#anyways. retractable leads are the worst actually

Pets are very commonly overweight. And very commonly the reason given will be ‘because my parents feed them more than they’re supposed to, and they won’t listen when I tell them to stop’.
And I sympathise. I understand. Parents are hard, especially when they still think of you as ‘their kid’ and not ‘grown adult with autonomy’. Getting your parent to change their behavior is very difficult.
My two cats have a scoop in their bag of food, and they get one scoop each for dinner. It’s a very simple system: 1 scoop 1 cat. If I notice they’re getting a bit podgy then I make the scoop a bit concave. If they’re looking a bit light, I give them a little extra breakfast. But dinner is always the same, never more than one scoop.
But last night I watch my mother (the very same woman that scolded me for my weight since I was ten) decide to feed the cats for me while I finished washing the dishes.
The cats follow her, mewing pathetically, as she carries the food bag to their bowls. And I watch, as she’s talking to me and making eye contact, while she gives one cat a slightly heaped scoop of food, and then the other.
And then, dear reader, she replaces the scoop into the bag, as though it’s the most natural thing in the world, and proceeds to give each cat an additional handful of food.
I was astounded. I was politely mortified that you just increased the cats’ meals by at least 80%. No wonder they’ve been podgy!
We had a polite but firm discussion about how that is a measured scoop in the bag, and have-you-been-feeding-that-much-the-whole-time, but I do not think she has listened. I think I will need to gently ban her from feeding the cats.
#honestly so grateful my parents are terrified of messing up feeding my dogs#and will do exactly what i say on the rare occasion i need them to help out#one of my huahuas did get a lil overweight but i switched to a WASAVA approved brand and he’s a healthy guy now#buying a 1/8 measuring cup instead of eye-balling half of the 1/4 cup probably also helped#anyway the 120lb labrador story is insane WHAT#my parents rescue dog was 20lbs overweight and they didn’t notice but eventually with me exercising him more and them feeding less#he got down to a healthy 35lbs and stayed in the 30-35lb range for the rest of his life#it’s wild looking back at photos of him before and how like. none of us noticed#**WSAVA

animal shelters are so busy warehousing dogs no one wants that when a dangerous animal is attacking pets and humans in your neighborhood they just shrug their shoulders
i'd bet money this dog isn't vaccinated for rabies

Research = anything where you needed to spend time looking for specific information you otherwise did not know, even if it only took a couple minutes.
#i don’t write fic but for rp and original writing#yes#i can’t imagine writing and not doing research#i would rather die than have to write without doing research#sometimes i’m double checking what i already know#once did extensive research into when spring mattresses became#widely available to the working/middle class in england#just so i could confirm if a character who lived in poverty would be surprised#when sitting on a bed and it squeaked from the springs#only to find out that it was a bit too early historically for the bed she was sitting on in an upper middle class home to have springs#anyways.#research good and necessary always#and not just for historical accuracy. i think the story just feels richer when you’ve done research

Maybe I’m biased but chihuahuas literally have the same temperament as any other dog. It’s the same as saying “cats are evil” to me like that’s not true. what did you do to them
#things that make me go feral#i hate that harrassing and abusing chihuahuas for online clout actually works#also the amount of harassment those dogs must face to get to that point……#like.#one of my huahuas has very strong boundaries#but even he doesn’t react like these poor social media dogs do from basic interactions#you have to really torment a small dog to get them to react that strongly to what is often a normal way to interact with a dog#just repeated violations of their boundaries#i can’t imagine the stress of being a tiny dog that has nothing at their disposal to get their owner to leave them alone#i remember seeing one guy whose dog started growling when he looked at her#looking at ur dog is pretty normal. so how badly has he antagonised that dog#that she growls when he so much as looks at her. she knows what’s coming#chihuahuas are wonderful dogs and deserve so much better

#a former friend of mine from uni was an english major and she fell for covid vaccine conspiracies so#i don’t think english majors are exempt from falling for conspiracies#or having bad critical thinking skills#my brother never graduated uni and he’s pretty good at identifying conspiracies and refuting it#when i was doing postgrad work as a history major there were guys in my cohort that genuinely thought racism didn’t exist anymore#and other incorrect right wing talking points#like. i don’t think the type of degree you get automatically makes you immune to#to propaganda and logical fallacies and falling for conspiracies#maybe it’s enough to just say english majors are important because art and studying art is important#rather than disparaging other fields of study?#there are a lot of different ways to learn how to think critically#the important part is having access to the tools and resources necessary to learn that skill

“boo hoo a chihuahua bit my ankle” ok and? maybe you should ask yourself what you did to deserve it?
#my chihuahuas hate bikes. it’s your fault for riding a bike#(actually tho they’ve both gotten so much better and don’t react to bikes (stationary or being ridden) on walks anymore#)#one of my lil guys is still very fearful of strangers and my friend said if he bit her feet it would be her fault lol#i mean. i don’t like. condone chihuahuas being aggressive but also 99% of the time there’s a reason#and the reason is that no one respects their boundaries and they are tiny#and that is not their fault 🥺#huahua tag
