Simon & Garfunkel - I Am A Rock
I love nice, pleasant sounding songs that are actually fuckin dark and bitter and depressing.

Junior Kimbrough & The Soul Blues Boys - Pull Your Clothes Off
Not many know that Mississippi is home to two subgenres of blues. Everyone knows the delta blues of the floodplains, but the highlands have their own music too. Hill-country blues is characterized by that fantastic persistent and hypnotic drone and a raw, lo-fi sound. R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough both epitomized electric hill-country blues, but unfortunately they began their short recording careers too late in life; both have passed away in the last several years. Seek out their music.

Pornosonic - Special Delivery
From an album of 70s porno music, this one is apparently from "A Happy Ass" (and yea, that's Ron Jeremy talkin). But really, who doesn't like some raunchy grooves on a Friday?

Helene Smith - Pain In My Heart
From the fantastic compilation album Eccentric Soul: The Deep City Label. Miami's Deep City record label had some of the best southern soul anywhere in the 60s, but it was eclipsed by the success of the Motown sound. Fortunately, the people behind the Eccentric Soul series gathered a bunch of these rare and lost recordings for us to revel in.

The Powder Kegs - John Brown's Dream
Keeping with the bluegrassy theme, here's a band from Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, The Powder Kegs. They were an ol' timey string band when they started out, and this album (The Seedhouse) is from that period. The got a good deal of national recognition (from the Grand Ole Opry, I think) but moved to Philly and on to a modern folkish rock sound. I have not been impressed with it, especially compared to how much I love The Seedhouse. It seems now that The Powder Kegs have all but disowned their string-band past, but supposedly they spun off a side group called The Philadelphia Colonels to somewhat keep playing that music. Whatever the case is with them now, I'm protecting my copies of this cd well, cause I doubt I'll be able to get any more.

The song behind the legendary scene in From Dusk Till Dawn. You may not have ever noticed it before, given what's happening on screen, but it's a damn good song!

Steve Cropper, Pop Staples, & Albert King - What'd I Say
I heard this a few days ago on WZLX's Sunday Morning Blues. Best part of the whole day. I tracked down the album, Jammed Together, and I'm listening to it all for the first time right now. Holy shit! I'll definitely be posting more of it soon.
