One of the women who organized the dance first complained about Claireâs dress, but upon checking, admitted that it conformed to the standards set for the event. Nonetheless, the same woman later pulled Claire aside and told her that some of the dadsâwho had been watching from a balconyâfelt her dancing was âtoo provocativeâ and liable to cause âimpure thoughts.â
When Claire pointed out that she hadnât even been dancing, other chaperones joined in, again told her that her dress was too short (despite having verified it was within standards, and despite other girls having shorter dresses), and, finally kicked her out of the dance.
What made Claire so provocative that these men couldnât control themselves? Well, apparently the fact that sheâs 5â9, with long legs, and built more like a grown woman than like a typical teenager. Thatâs it.
The problem isnât that these men found her to be attractive; the problem is that they and othersâincluding other womenâheld Claire responsible for the menâs unwillingness to control their own reactions.
The message here is that if a man has difficulty controlling himself around a woman he finds attractive, itâs the womanâs fault for being too âprovocative.â
Let me emphasize that point for those who still donât get it: Women are held accountable for menâs reactions. This is why when a woman reports a rape, or sexual harassment of any kind, among the first questions askedâby both men and womenâis inevitably, âwhat was she wearing?â And unless she was covered head to toe, there are inevitably comments like, âWell, what did she expect?â Even if the woman was wearing baggy sweatpants and a sweater three sizes too big, there are far too many whoâs first response is, âWell, she must have done something.â
And this, my friends, is rape culture.

A 14 year-old boy was recently raped at knife-point by a 20 year-old woman. When the story broke, it was primarily men who claimed he should have enjoyed it. It was feminists who validated his pain and spoke in support of him. This is why we need feminism.

So typically Eurovision is the time when all of Europe loses its right to pass judgment on anyone. Here's Conchita Wurst of Austria, the winner this year, and a transgender woman. This is what we call progress.

Iâll leave you with this tidbit. 73% of all female characters in the 100 highest grossing films of 2013 were Caucasian, 14% were African American, 5% were Latina, 3% were Asian, and another 3% were aliens or fantasy races. Yes. In 2013, American theater audiences were about as likely to see a woman of an animal species or completely made up race as they were to see an Asian woman.

Ever notice how when justifying a childâs misbehavior no one ever says stuff like âgirls will be girlsâ or âsheâs a girlâ, but the list of things a âyoung ladyâ canât do is almost endless?
You learn from a young age that masculinity comes with freedom; femininity comes with restrictions.

The Vagenda Magazine asked their Twitter followers to tweet them edited headlines. Their followers did not disappoint.
In case you missed it, women are people, too.

In science class, talking about certain properties of substances and what a "Porperty" is. My science teacher asks me to stand up and ask the class for some of my properties. (FYI I am female and fully identify as such, but this was still a cool thing to say on my teacher's behalf)
first kid: red hair!
teacher: (immediately nods and writes "red hair" on board) yup, that is one of alex's properties, sure.
another kid: brown eyes!
teacher: (nods and writes on board)
yet another kid: freckles
teacher: all great answers, (writes on board) anything else?
Lets call him Bob: Shes a girl
Teacher: (Pauses, looks at me, then back at the kid) Well it's not my place to confirm that, besides, you have no idea whether Alex is a girl or not.
Bob: Well she's got boobs
Teacher: (Doesnt even get mad at the smartassish response, just nods calmly) Yes, now, having boobs is a property. Gender on the other hand is much less physical, and a lot more mental. Just because she has body parts that are recognized generally on females, does not mean that she's female herself. So why don't we say, instead of "she's a girl" we'll just say she has boobs
Teacher: (writes on board "Alex has boobs")

This is so sad, but perfectly true. I hate going in to the menâs bathroom but at this point in my transition since I am not always dressed, sometimes I am forced to. But this is exactly how I feel when I have to choose.

I need feminism because most menâs restrooms still arenât equipped with baby changing stations. As someone who was married to a man who had sole custody of his young son, Iâm hyperaware that feminism means EQUALITY, not female superiority. Feminism should and does support a manâs right to be as much of a parent to his child(ren) as any mother is allowed/expected to be.

So Avril Lavigne recently released this video for her new song "Hello Kitty" and received a lot of backlash for racist themes throughout. She defended her choices on twitter (x), saying that she was showing her love for the culture. I feel it should be made clear at this point that Japanese culture is not giant stuffed pastries, pink, and Hello Kitty. These are all extremely modern developments in a culture that has existed for centuries and to present this as a representation of what there is to love about Japan is, in my opinion, a gross disservice to the people and their history. Furthermore, the video promotes a fetishization of Asian women as perfect little dolls who exist for aesthetic pleasure instead of as actual people, catering to the objectification of Asian women. She treats the dancers as props for the purpose of adding some sort of distorted authenticity to her "cultural appreciation".
TLDR: There are better ways to honor a culture. Sanrio is not Japan. Sorry, Avril, your video is racist. Do better.
NOTE: All statements are opinion of me, Marile, and not representative of the entire group. Direct comments/questions to me.
