Tuesday 12th November 2024 [26/100 DOP]

Today was the third session of Forensic Casework:

The suspect stain which tested negatively for saliva...uh..tested positive as human semen which was definitely something.

We also did glass analysis and examination under a microscope.

One of the members of my lab group and I were losing our marbles because we had to tie a thread to the glass fragments to measure density and the threads kept sliding off.

The rest of our group did FTIR testing of paint samples - both recovered and reference

Also they did DNA extraction which was interesting

Today we had a lecture about forensic botany and a lecture about forensic investigations of car crashes and traffic incidents.

Super interesting!

Wednesday 6th November 2024 [24/100 DOP]

Did a bit of work from home (again no photos of actual work)

Had a migraine so stopped

I did some more chores

Set up my shoe rack

Did 2 loads of washing

Started sorting boxes and trying to organise/tidy downstairs

Tuesday 5th November 2024 [23/100 DOP]

Forensic Casework in the lab!

Did some examination of the evidence

Utilising alt light sources - found staining - tested for saliva and it came back negative

Used FTIR on fibres - taken from the victims sweatshirt and reference sample from the suspects jumper. There was a match!

Planned next couple of sessions and kept up to date with the budget

Then MWAHAHA BONFIRE NIGHT

Monday 4th November 2024 [22/100 DOP]

Today I felt ill so did not end up going to uni

However did some tidying and washing up.

Before our flat decided to throw a strop.

A bulb blew and now I'm wandering around in darkness.

We have mains power but no ceiling lights are working so now I feel like a horror game protagonist using my phone torch light

I hit silly mode and forgot to make any posts last week but interesting stuff happened so thought I'd make one big week post. (Drat - pretend I posted this 11 minutes ago)

28/10/24 (Monday)

Guest Lecturer Dr Maria Maclennan who talked about Forensic Jewellers + let us get crafty and consider our personal effects and the significance and meaning we give them beyond what another viewer sees or the initial maker sees.

Organised Crime- economic/financial crime gonna be honest this was boring as hell to me

Forensic Casework Practical - actually opened the evidence and began taking samples and extracting evidence which is why there's a massive pile of evidence bags in that photo

Worked from home- I can't get any photos of my work as I'd be breaching GDPR as I deal with sensitive information. Also made meatball subs for dinner.

Twas Halloween! Woo! Did I do anything special? No. Except for making a cup of tea for myself and one for my ancestors as a bit of an emergency offering.

01/11/24

Tried getting on top of washing the dishes because I'm not good at that and I end up as a soapy Sisyphus gazing at the mound in despair. Also watched both national treasue films again

02/11/24

Went to Costco and Hobbycraft - only got two stuffed pumpkin decorations from hobbycraft but got a fuck load of mince and chipolatas, big block of cheese and chocolate seashells from costco

Got home watched the Limehouse golem and the Davinci Code

Sorted the doom pile

Did two loads of laundry

Got an amazon delivery

Partner came back from being away!

Sat on pinterest doing nothing 😅

Friday 25th October 2024 [15/100 DOP]

Today went to a knitting workshop to make a pumpkin and I ...did not do well.

I haven't knitted in years so I really struggled and ended up practicing/relearning how to knit.

Then went to the Works got books before heading home and attempting more knitting.

Thursday 24th October 2024 [14/100 DOP]

Went charity shopping today and brought a small horde of clothes.

Stopped off in a cafe as you can see by the photo.

Got home proceeded to do laundry, play crusader Kings 2 GOT mod with my bf for about 2 hours (this I'd after yesterday us playing it together for 5 and half hours).

Now binge watching Bones

GAH FORGOT TO POST THIS ON TUESDAY AND POSTED WEDNESDAY BEFORE

Today I'm in uni again and in the laboratory. On the way in it rained a lot and there was a rainbow!

Starting the assessed work for Forensix Casework and the Expert Witness where we receive an item and have to make an examination strategy and examine and acquire evidence to then examine and do presumptive testing on.

Had the misfortune of there being a photographer in so there's now a photo of me examining packaged evidence with a magnifying glass 🔍 😅

Wednesday 23rd October 2024 [13/100DOP]

(Forgot to post this yesterday)

No university on Wednesday for the Autumn Semester.

However yesterday:

Got my hair cut

Sent off birthday and new baby congratulations cards

Met a funky and affectionate black cat (one brown and one green eye)

Went for a walk

Lunch: mozzarella and mushroom omelette with toast and salad. Drink: chai latte

Then when I got home I cleaned and mopped the bathroom and cooked dinner (spaghetti bolognase and garlic bread).

Then spent my evening playing the game of thrones crusader Kings 2 mod with my partner (never played it before so that was interesting)

Alright I've really not been doing well at keeping up with DOP or at being productive at all so skipping to today.

Forensic Specialisms - Lecture 1: guest speaker who talked about forensic product manufacturers and innovation of forensic science and products in the 21st. Honestly felt like I had accidentally walked into a business studies lecture

Investigation of Serious and Organised Crime - lecture 1: drug trafficking in the UK particularly England and Wales

Forensic Specialisms - lecture 2: DNA analysis- exploring microble DNA ans microgenomics.

Investigation of Serious and Organised Crime - Lecture 2 looking at firearms and arms trafficking

Monday 13th October 2024 [10/100 DOP]

I haven't posted anything for a while because I've really been struggling to keep being productive. So I took a break from 100DOP and am now back.

Yesterday had a full day of lectures:

Forensic Specialism where one of our lecturers talked to us about forensic context and evidence dynamics (she's a CSI so was talking about her experiences with that)

Investigation of Serious And Organised Crime - first lecture - talked about digital forensics, cyber enabled and cyber dependent crime and the differences. Also briefly talked about cell tracing and pinging (I was the example of the person who was murdered)

Investigation of Serious and Organised Crime - second lecture - planning of academic literature review - I'm planning on doing mine on the history and progression and development of the use of forensic anthropology in identifying mass casualty incident victims and DVI (disaster victims identification) including in terrorism events.

When walking home took a snap of the church nearby because it looked atmospheric with the floodlights

I'm skipping Wednesday because I did nothing.

Also again pretend I posted this yesterday.

Went out for a walk and saw a grey heron and a water vole at the park near my flat.

Mopped the kitchen floor

Did a load of washing up

Searched for my passport - couldn't find the damn thing.

Happy 1st of October! Spooky season and autumn properly in swing now.

Today's lecture was Forensic Casework and the Expert Witness.

DNA - extraction, DNA Fingerprinting, DNA analysis.

The Prosecutor's Fallacy.

Then on the way home popped to the shops to get food supplies.

Monday 30th September 2024 [7/100 DOP]

Had to wake up at 6am to get the buses to uni which was hellish with only 5 hours sleep.

Then had 8 hours of lectures before I went home and passed out because the cold chronicles were still ongoing.

Lectures:

Forensic Specialism - vehicle collisions and pedestrian throw. Interesting topic but the lecturer had the most monotone voice ever and I was fighting to remain awake

Investigation of Serious and Organised Crime - we had a challenge where you either answered the question or if you passed you had to do a 30 sec plank. We also went over how to do our academic literature review.
