Say it louder for the people in the back. If a person can't be bothered to get their facts straight, they shouldn't be trying to convince other people of anything. They need to do their damn research.
“ummm actually moonriver is problematic because of the age gap… just ship lawlight”
the age gap between light and near during their arc is 23 and 18. the age gap between light and L during theirs is 18 and 25. stop policing people if you aren’t gonna do the research 🙄 both ships are valid

I am still thinking about how Light died a month before his 24th birthday. He died on January 28th and his birthday is on February 28th. He wasted years of his life being a serial killer when he could've lived normally if he hadn't picked up the notebook or had destroyed it when he had the chance. He faced the consequences of his actions in the warehouse. In the end, he had only himself to blame. He did it all to himself. I don't believe any theories about the notebook possessing or corrupting him. No, the manga shows that he ruined himself. He was the agent of his own destruction and he knew it.
That's why the anime cutting out most of the scenes that show Light actually regretting his actions and caring about others bothers me so much. By taking out the parts that humanize him and make him sympathetic, a lot of the nuance of the manga was lost.
Light Yagami is a fascinating character. He is probably my favorite villain protagonist because of the beautiful tragedy that is his story. L may be my favorite character in Death Note, but Light's struggles, both within and without, really make me think and give me so many ideas for writing. I am really glad to be a part of this fandom and I hope to post more fics on AO3 soon.

You're actually safe because that's not how it works. You have 40 seconds to write cause of death and then 6 minutes and 40 seconds to add details. If you don't, the person you want to kill just dies of a heart attack. The only way you die is if you purposefully write someone's name wrong (with the intent to spare them or make them immune to the Death Note) or your own name (to commit suicide). Source: How to Read 13 and the rules within the manga itself. I originally put this in replies, but I figured a reblog would be better.
everyone always talks about weather or not they would use the notebook but no one ever talks about their penmanship.
If you don't write down everything in a minute you literally die. my dyslexic ass could never. You ecpect me, to write a name and cause of death within 60 seconds? My anxiety would be off the charts.

Don't worry, it's cool. I've got plenty of headcanons that aren't based on anything canon and are just random stuff or guilty pleasures. Tis the joy of fandom! There are times I just kinda throw canon out the window and say "Nope, not today. Canon? Don't know her. It's time to throw ideas at a dartboard and see what sticks".
L’s Backstory
L Lawliet was born in England. His mother was half-English and half-Russian. His father was half-French and half-Japanese (based off of L’s ethnicity confirmation in How to Read. I chose French over Italian for the remaining quarter) and was born in France. His parents simply liked the idea of a single letter name for him.
The surname comes from his mother’s family. His dad took her name when they married. Both parents had black hair. His mother had gray eyes and his father had brown. L resembles his mother more, including her bone and facial structure. He looks more White than Japanese/Asian.
His mother worked as a nanny for a family in the British Peerage. Being around the upper-class despite not being rich at the time led to L developing Received Pronunciation (also called BBC or Queen’s English, along with many other names) as his natural accent despite it being more common among the upper and upper-middle classes of London and Southeast England.
They moved to France when he was young (around 3) because his father wanted to go back to his homeland. When he was seven, they were in Paris for vacation. His parents were shot in the hotel lobby along with several other victims. The murderer fled the scene.
After they died, L’s other relatives couldn’t take him in (they had their own kids to worry about). He spent about a year in a shitty French orphanage where he was teased for being “a freak” and autistic. He was often neglected by the staff because they did not understand his needs.
When he was eight, Wammy found him while visiting France and took him back to England. He was never told off for stimming or anything else relating to his autism. Wammy was extremely supportive and understanding. L was spoiled there (which is why he became somewhat lazy).
After about a week at Wammy’s Winchester Orphanage (he runs multiple orphanages), L was adopted by Wammy.
L has several things from his parents. His favorite is a music box. He plays it when he has trouble sleeping.
He developed an interest in detective work because of his parents’ murders. He started solving small cases (for petty crimes) around eleven years old. Wammy was the one who conveyed his conclusions to the police since they would not take advice from an eleven-year-old.
L eventually solved his parents’ cold case when he was fourteen and had the murderer locked up for life.
He does have a sense of justice and morality (as hinted by several lines in the LABB prequel novel) but is cavalier about it. He is also selfish and acknowledges this. Completely amoral people are pretty rare and it would be hard to write a character like that because most people have some sort of moral code, questionable or not. So yes, L has a moral compass.
He can be selfish or altruistic depending on the situation. Sometimes he wants people to have a lower opinion of him because he doesn’t particularly want hero worship.
L will solve cold cases. He usually solves them for free, but it depends on the case (wealthy private citizens will typically get charged and so will police departments that handled the case badly). He wants to bring closure to the families.
Like it’s stated in LABB, L will usually only take a case if there are ten or more victims (murder, kidnapping, rape, arson, etc) or at least a million dollars at stake (art theft, corporate theft, or any crime involving money). He will ignore these conditions IF the case is interesting and/or noted for being difficult.
L charges differently depending on who is hiring him and what the case is. If he’s being hired by a company/organization/government/person he doesn’t like (because of corruption or bad practices), he’ll charge extra. If the case is annoying/ridiculous but otherwise meets his requirements, he’ll do it and charge an extra fee. If the case goes against his morals, he won’t bother.
L has a blacklist for governments, companies, and people he will not accept cases from. North Korea, certain Middle Eastern nations, and other dictatorships are on that blacklist. He will accept some jobs from China, but his relationship with the country is very strained.
He is definitely willing to do certain illegal or morally gray things if it’s to obtain justice. He will lie, plant cameras and microphones, hire skilled criminals and informants (actual law enforcement agencies do this too, though), and manipulate people. He will also utilize torture, but only on specific types of criminals and cases (like terrorists with knowledge of a bomb or a sex trafficker/kidnapper/serial killer hiding their victims, for instance). It has to be a situation where lives are in danger (or could be) or the criminal is truly despicable/dangerous. There are hard lines he won’t cross, though.
L has studied tons of criminal psychology and actually has a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (which is part of the reason why he is such a good profiler). He is a real psychologist and can make diagnoses. He is not a psychiatrist and can’t prescribe medicines, though. That requires a medical degree.
He was always interested in psychology because he finds the human mind fascinating, but he moved to criminal psych after his parents were killed.
L actually was the British Junior Champion in tennis, just under a fake name. He tries all kinds of hobbies to expand his knowledge.

He actually tortures Misa and Light in canon. I'm not saying anything new. What he did to both them counts as torture. Is it the most accurate way to get information? No. Is he aware of that? Yes. Does he care when he needs to stop a global threat? Probably not.
Sorry if this sounded snappish, but a lot of my headcanons are based off of what actually goes on in the manga or could otherwise be plausible. It is a fact that L tortures Misa and Light.

Theoretical Alphabet Apprentices Part 1
So I thought about making a Wammy's House apprentice for every unused letter and finally did it. I have not consumed any other Death Note media besides the manga as of writing this, so none of these characters are related to anything that happens in the dramas, movies, etc. I may use these OCs in a fic at some point.
G's real name is Gilbert Reinders. He is Frisian and was born in Germany. He speaks German, Frisian, English, and Dutch. He is learning French. His birthday is November 5, 1986.
He is 5'8 in height. His hair is blonde and he has light blue eyes. He hates bullying and will defend others. He is pretty strong.
His mother gave him up after her boyfriend left her, unwilling and unable to take care of him. After spending three years in foster care, he was brought to Wammy's when he was 8. He is very reserved and studious. He excels at mathematics.
He stays in the reformed program despite not caring about being a detective because he doesn't know what he wants to do. Others have suggested that he become an architect because he likes talking about architecture. As of pre-timeskip Death Note, he is 17-18.
H's real name is Hezar Baran. She is Kurdish and was born in Iran. She speaks Kurdish, Farsi, and English. Her birthday is December 4, 1990.
She is 5'1 and half in height. She has tan skin, dark brown hair, and amber eyes. She likes to dance and stretch, so she is fairly athletic.
Her parents were killed during a terrorist attack when she was 10. She spent a year in an orphanage before being taken to Wammy's after he visited Iran and saw her. She loves tinkering with machines and fixing things. She quit the reformed program to study robotics.
She is a Sunni Muslim and enjoys debating theology with others regardless of what they believe. She hates extremists from any religion because her parents lost their lives due to extremism. She wears a headscarf but chooses not to cover her face. As of pre-timeskip Death Note, she is 13-14.
I's real name is Izhi Huapaya. She is a Quechua native from Peru. Her first name apparently means "fog, mist". She speaks Quechua, Spanish, and English. Her birthday is September 27, 1989.
She is 5'2 in height. She has tan skin, brown hair, and hazel eyes from a Spanish-descended relative. She is very stealthy.
Her parents gave her away to her uncle when she was 4 because they could not afford to feed her and themselves. He died six years later due to cancer. She was 12 when Wammy visited her orphanage in Peru and took her to England. She is polite and quiet. Her listening and information gathering skills are top notch. She has no intention of quitting the Successor Program because she wants to be a detective or a spy.
She is Catholic but mixes several of her people's tribal traditions into her beliefs. She is terrified of birds, citing that their beaks and beady eyes are unnerving. As of pre-timeskip Death Note, she is 14-15.
J's real name is Jayesh Sharma. He was born in India. He is the son of an Indian man and a white American woman. He speaks Hindi, English, Chinese, and Japanese. His birthday is November 15, 1985.
He is 5'8 and three quarters. He has tan skin, black hair, and his mother's blue eyes. He is learning martial arts and wants to be a pro.
His parents were shunned in the village that they lived in because they were not married. Eventually they were forced to give him to the local orphanage by the townsfolk. He was bullied for being biracial. Wammy visited India when he was 9 and took him to England. He is friendly to everyone he meets and never taunts anyone.
While he doesn't want to be a detective, he stays in the program to learn as much as he can about it. He genuinely enjoys hearing about L's cases. As of pre-timeskip Death Note, he is 18-19.

Okay, it's time for a post about another one of my OCs for @nateriverswife. Here is Burauni Kurusu, a cooking show idol. She is pretty popular and Light watches her show because he wants to learn to cook and is too embarrassed to ask his mom (he's a perfectionist and doesn't want to look silly if he messes up). She wears brown and white Lolita fashion while on TV. Her name is basically how a Japanese person might pronounce the word "brownie" and it is her real name. Her surname is written with the kanji for "come" and "nest", which probably had an original meaning like "come home" or "from the nest".
She doesn't support Kira, but she also doesn't talk about her opinions on breaking news or political stuff on her show because it would ruin the fun. Below are some images made by Bing Image Creator. The last two are in a more realistic anime style.
And here's a bonus short hair version that I don't like as much. I picture her with long hair.

I used the Bing Image Creator to make one of my Death Note OCs. Here's Hinode Kanemiya, a famous singer and fanatical Kira supporter who is so evil that Light, Misa, and Teru Mikami don't actually want her on their team! I designed her to be a card carrying villain (not that she thinks she is a villain) who is unapologetically evil and petty.
She has a stage name, Shirahime, which means "white princess" and uses it to portray herself as morally upstanding and gracious when in reality she is cruel, violent, and very condescending to others. The last image of her is if she had her own Death Note and was at a fancy party.

Gorgeous. Sad. The feels. L trying to be comforting. AHHHHH. I hope this becomes a posted fic at some point.
“I miss them so much,” Light replies, and this, too, is unlike him; typically, getting emotional truth out of Light is worse than pulling teeth. His voice is so small. He feels so small in L's arms, even though he’s almost as tall as L is. “My family. I miss them so much. I miss my house. I miss my parents. I miss my sister. I miss my room.” He makes a wavering little noise. “I miss — everything. I miss trashy konbini food. I miss the city noise when I was falling asleep. I miss getting on the subway at rush hour and being crammed in against everyone's disgusting sweaty bodies and wanting to die even though I did it every day. But I miss them the worst. I feel so alone here. Everyone hates me. I want my mom.”
“Okay,” L says, petting Light’s hair awkwardly. He’s not good at this. He is, in fact, actively bad at this. “That’s understandable,” he continues. “It’s normal to be uncomfortable in a new place. And it’s normal to miss your family.”
“I’m never going to see them again,” Light says, and his voice is so tiny and miserable it’s almost a whimper. “Never, never, never.”
You might have thought of that before becoming the most prolific individual serial killer in the history of the entire world, L thinks but does not say. Instead, his hand trails down to rub Light’s back. Light is trembling, clinging close to L like L is the only thing tethering him to Earth.
“No, I don’t think you will,” L murmurs, low and gentle. — By the brilliant @dykelawlight

I really like this! It's poetic, it's pretty, it feels correct. Light's name is literally spelled with the kanji for moon. *insert moonlight puns here* He has to be the moon.
Light is not the sun, and L is not the moon.
L is the winter sun, radiating a cool, white light. You cannot see exactly from where he shines, because he hides himself in the snowy clouds. He is blinding, all encompassing, cold. He uses the clouds as a shield, and a prism to refract and scatter his light. And though you will not know how far he is from the horizon, whether he is rising or setting, you will feel his light everywhere.
Light is the golden moon, the one you see on a rare night and admire as long as you can. His light is gentle and warm, the center of the night sky, shining brighter than even the stars. His golden colour a reflection of humanity's pollution, his light reflected from the sun.
He needs it, to be seen. For he has no light of his own, without the sun. And though you may see his golden light, hidden from humanity is his darkness, the shaded side of him he let's no one, not even the sun gaze upon. And should the sun go dark, its white light he spins gold dimmed, the shadows will encompass him, and he will fade away. Dead with the sun, just a gilded memory.
And should the golden moon disappear, the sun will not be able to have his light reflected warmly back at him, and he shall stand alone in the sky until he goes out in a great blaze.
And so they chase one another across the sky, catching up to eachother every so often to see eachothers glow.

People still think Light wasn't 18 when he started college. His birthday is in February and his college semester started in APRIL. He was not 17 when he first met L in person. People need to stop spreading misinformation. Disliking the ship is one thing and completely reasonable. Claiming it's "underage" when it's not is another thing entirely. I honestly see this in a lot of fandoms with a lot of ships. Some people will do anything to demonize a ship they don't like and I'm like "Why bother? If you don't like it, move on. Don't be a jerk to people who do."
Warning people about or avoiding actual underage ships and other questionable relationships (incest, noncon, etc) is admirable and a good thing. Getting upset over things like toxic character dynamics, enemies to lovers, and whatever else you don't like about a ship and bashing people who do like it is ridiculous. Others are allowed to enjoy those things. Stuff like this is why I dislike dealing with shipping communities and fandoms. I don't get why some folks go out of their way to find content they hate and start arguments with fans of that content. It solves nothing and spreads toxicity. Blocking tags is a function that exists for a reason.

THANK YOU!!! I agree with the first half of this. If Light was innocent, L would not suspect him. At all. He would have no reason to. The idea that he would is definitely an insult to his intelligence. I am so glad someone decided to say this!
I personally don't think L preferred Memory Altered!Light or Light with his Death Note memories. With or without his memories, Light is Kira. Just because he doesn't remember his crimes does not mean he is suddenly innocent. L wants to stop Kira and thus would not particularly like either Light. But that's just me.
unpopular opinion: the idea that L would have suspected light of being kira regardless of whether he actually was is a blatant insult to L's intelligence and similarly the idea that L preferred yotsuba light to kira light is just categorically incorrect
