I feel like Kuai in the previous timeline was accidentally given the perfect chance to be a solid protagonist. Not only for a good spinoff, but for a main game as well.
I mean, you start off with a pretty sheltered protagonist, having been raised in a remote temple. This already puts him closer to the player in terms of his knowledge about the world, while simultaneously giving him an interesting background that still gives him intrigue.
Story mode would begin with Kuai observing Bi-Han execute a new move on the mats, before he's pulled away into a friendly spar with Tomas as the first battle. Then, I imagine Bi-Han suiting up in their room and briefly telling Kuai about a mission he's going on. They exchange brief, kind of impersonal goodbyes.. but Kuai can't keep it up and ends up embracing Bi-Han, and maybe tells him he's got a bad feeling about this. Bi-Han sighs and indulges him in the hug before telling him not to worry and taking his leave.
With that relationship established, the chapter ends and cuts to Liu Kang. The events of the first tournament happen. Back to Kuai, he receives the news of Bi-Han's passing.
Back to more conceptual thoughts, I feel like Kuai became a very sympathetic character by the end of MKX, but he's kind of always been. I mean, he was set up as a contrast to Bi-Han whose only personality trait for a long time was being, well, cold. Kuai, in contrast, is shown to be kind and caring as early as Defenders of the Realm. He's also implied to be sp during the 3D era, with his friendship to Hanzo carried over and his acceptance of Sareena (no matter how it ends lol), but especially The Tea Scene solidified it for people I think. And it was carried over nicely to Legends.
Anyway, sorry for the rambling tangent but what I mean here is that he's quite likable, and also.. very sympathetic. As Tumblr people, we all know that the more a character suffers, the more we tend to like them. And Kuai has an absolute well of suffering to pull from. The losses of Bi-Han, Tomas, Cyrax, and later even Hanzo, tje Cyber Initiative, his time as a revenant, his time possessed by the dagger, Frost's betrayal... it goes on and on.
I think the potential game would only have room to make it to the Cyber Initiative, but that's still a lot considering his horrific upbringing in the Lin Kuei and the fact that he's basically the last of his kind.
Back to the game's plot, I feel like modern MK really suffers from not pulling on its subplots for story. You can only have an all-hands-on-deck We Have To Kill God story so many times before it gets boring. What Scorpion's Revenge gets right and Battle of the Realms doesn't is exactly this: one is a solid story about a character that happens to take them to the high-stakes fight in the end, the other is a sloppy mess of half-baked ideas.
So. We don't need to follow ten angles of the same story, but we can see the main story progress from the eyes of Kuai in his quest to get his revenge. The player will see the important things happening in the background, but Kuai will be more focused on his task. Liu Kang's pov can fill in some of the blanks but he must also have his own story.
Though whatever happens, I feel like Kuai should get the opportunity to kill Scorpion but choose not to, leaving it at defeating him.
TL;DR: I think it's a great idea! Honestly I could write a whole script but this was kinda spontaneous so I'm leaving it here kfvkdk
What do you think about Kuai Liang (as either Sub-Zero or Scorpion) being the main protagonist, or at least A protagonist, in a version of the Mortal Kombat tournament?
Liu Kang would still play a huge role, and he is still the one who becomes the Mortal Kombat champion (by beating either Goro or General Shao), but I did think of taking a page from Scorpion's Revenge by having Kuai Liang's primary feud with Hanzo Hasashi or Bi Han (depending on which mantle Kuai has) be a huge part of the story.
The thinking behind this idea is that Mortal Kombat is a fighting game with a huge ensemble, and I did think about giving some characters their share of the spotlight, though most of my take would focus on both Kuai Liang AND Liu Kang.
But hey, don't take my word for it...what do you think of this idea? Feel free to comment.
#honestly we should've gotten that sub/scorp spinoff#that wouldve probably been THE SHIT#he DESERVED to be an mc with the way they fleshed him out esp in mkx comics#kuai liang you'll always be famous..#mortal kombat#kuai liang

Lol, forget being in character, he doesn't even get their voices right. I especially love qhen Kuai talks like Some Action Guy:
Can you imagine him saying this shit in Steve Blum's voice I'm crying-
Okay, so, I had to reread some of the mkx blood ties comics as research for a fic and:
Kuai Liang had just woken up, when Raiden sent him after the Kamidogu.
Like, it's never outright stated, but the implication is that Kuai Liang has literally just been resurrected. He's waking up after being a revenant for the first time since having his humanity restored.
And he's awake for all of 2 seconds before Raiden sends him on that sidequest.
Which, I mean, I hadn't forgotten that (for all that I choose to ignore it for the sake of Plot) but it still slaps me in the face every time.
Because that's pretty fucked up, right?
Kuai Liang's literal entire family is dead, he has nothing and no one left, has Just woken up free to think his own thoughts for the first time in actual years, has woken up From A Nightmare about being controlled by Quan Chi
And Raiden sends him after the Kamidogu while he's still trying to catch his breath
This is made all the worse by the fact that it is further implied that Hanzo got given a Kamidogu to protect around the same time, which would have been before Takeda joined at about 8, and when Hanzo and Takeda are sent (BY RAIDEN) after a possessed Kuai Liang, Takeda is a teenager
Which means that Kuai Liang was going after the Kamidogu for years, and given his skill, it wouldn't have taken him all of those years just to locate it, it would have taken months. A single year tops.
So he was probably possessed for years.
And the comics explicitly tells us (if I remember correctly, if I don't then they Heavily implied it) that Raiden knew Kuai Liang was possessed the whole time. But instead of sending help, Raiden sent Hanzo, who had just lost his entire clan AGAIN, and was fully ready to kill Kuai Liang, which Raiden would have to be a moron to not see coming.
I don't have a point to this rant, I just wanted to point out the fact that Kuai Liang has literally never gotten a single break in his life

Ehh. I don't really think it's that deep, to be honest. I remember watching a breakdown of the comics on yt (by the4thsnake if I remember correctly) and he mentioned how the comics' writer was only vaguely aware of what happened in the games as he wrote, since the comics were promotional and like half of it came out before MKX itself.
The guy pretty much made up the whole "using hellfire makes Scorpion come out" bit. He treated it like the reason Hanzo doesn't want to be called that upon revival is that it was some evil alter ego, and not just the name he used while making his biggest mistakes. The premise can be interesting on its own, if a bit tired, but I feel it defeats the purpose of Hanzo's character as a foil to Kuai, with Hanzo doing everything he did out of his own volition while ill-informed, where Kuai was forced into doing things he knew to be wrong.
And, in a bid to appeal to the Straight Male Audience, comic Hanzo comes off like he didn't give much of a shit about the Shirai Ryu 2.0 in the first place. I don't really buy that he's all that upset about losing them, and not just getting lied to and almost killed.
The comics don't feel all that canon to me, tbh. You mean to tell me MKX Hanzo just rebuilt the Shirai Ryu for the third time in like 5 years since the last wipeout? Yeah, sure, buddy. He would totally do that. It's just a clumsy attempt to make Scorpion look cool that backfires spectacularly by making him a colossal asshole.
Okay, so, I had to reread some of the mkx blood ties comics as research for a fic and:

It's so incredibly crazy to me just how much they tortured Kuai in the comics and all the promotional material for MKX, only to give us The Tea Party.
But though Raiden was hilariously incompetent/uncaring about what he made Kuai do, I think Hanzo was just.. almost out-of-character terrible.
Like, I could get behind how he acted towards Kuai if his own student that he had hand picked to teach hadn't just been made to massacre his entire clan by the very same thing possessing Kuai. And he's aware of it-just look what he says here!
No, he just gets his ass handed to him by possessed!Kuai and then damn near kills the poor guy when Kuai breaks free from the possession (no thanks to Hanzo, mind you) and defensively tries to convince Hanzo to stop fucking attacking him.
At this point, the threat is neutralized, all Hanzo has to do is take the damn dagger and leave. But instead, he guts Kuai, taunts his about "reflecting on his misdeeds", and leaves him there to bleed out or be found and re-cyberized by the frozen cyborgs slowly thawing that he just saw walking around the city.
NOT TO MENTION-As Kuai tries to get through to him and tells him of the trauma of being controlled, Hanzo damn near mocks him and re-enforces that he's had a choice in all he's ever done.
And Hanzo is still not the villain here, somehow. Nor does he get any sort of repercussions for this, even when the comic takes Kuai on as a hero.
Bonus: Kuai just being miserable everytime he's on screen

It's so funny to me because it's like the Lin Kuei are deliberately holding onto their ancient.. aesthetic(?) with the temple, the grandmaster's throne room and attire, and how their warriors are trained to act in a certain way... but they're also on par with the Black Dragon in terms of tech.
I mean, even setting aside the whole cyberization bit, we see Cyrax and Sektor using all manner of technological weapons. Some of which can grant Sektor short-range teleportation even when he's human in MK9. And I doubt they're the only Lin Kuei to be fitted with these-unless you've got something supernatural going on like the brothers or Smoke (or Hydro lol), you're getting some advanced weaponry. I have no doubt they have scores of engineers to maintain all of them. Maybe all Lin Kuei have a basis in engineering, and the promising ones get to work on it full-time...
I guess things get mixed up real quickly when your clientele ranges from corrupt politicians to a bald fuck from hell to demigods and even fallen elder gods. I love MK lore it's so silly
Me: Lin Kuei is like a cult
Also me to my brother: Y'know there's a comic where Kuai Liang appears with a jet... Do you think that the Lin Kuei have aircraft carrier? That they're like, the MCU's Red Room with a lot technological resources around the globe?
#the lin kuei#and their vintage assassin cosplay#thinking of kuai on a laptop fucking SENDS me but he's probably using one on the regular for supplies and surveillance#and keeping in touch with the special forces#also i wouldn't be surprised if he thinks in code sometimes lol#ex-cyborg problems#mortal kombat#kuai liang

Dracula making sure Jonathan sees him making the bed and preparing the dinner is so sadistic.
At the beginning Dracula makes a lot of effort to pretend that there are servants everywhere, even miming as a carriage driver.
And then he starts to shift Jonathans sleeping rhythm, so he is awake all night (like Dracula himself).
Then says: „you can go everywhere, expect for the locked doors“
And suddenly Jonathan noticed that ALL doors are locked and he is fact a prisoner. Driving him nearly mad.
And to increase the torture even more, Dracula now makes sure that Jonathan sees him doing the servant work making sure Jonathan realizes he is not only trapped, he is also completely alone.
#thought this was about hotel transylvania for a hot minute and was impressed by the rare pair#...i need more sleep

You're so right and you should say it!!
Also consider: mkx revenant era subscorp... nothing is resolved between them, their wounds are still fresh and yet they have to work together under quan chi. Scorpion has to face the fact that while he embraced his undeath as a spectre, sub-zero is a revenant and just a shell of his darkest qualities. He wasn't given a choice.
I just imagine them very violently falling into each other as the days drag on in the netherrealm... what starts as sparring ends with their teeth cutting each others' lips open 👁️👁️
i need subscorp so bad. and by that i don't mean tender old men yaoi. i need them toxic yaoi. i need angst, blood and gay sex. pining and misunderstandings i want them to suffer and hurt eachother (also have rough gay sex)
#i miss angst and suffering i can't stand them tender and happy anymore#i also miss subscorp#<- truer words never spoken#yeah yeah the tender old man yaoi is great BUT what about the mutual young man hate boners that got them there??#I also liked the BotR chill/feral but the personality role reversal was a bit ehh#subscorp#mortal kombat

Well, we last saw Kuai in Jade's chapter where he helped Jade defeat Frost in the Cyber Lin Kuei factory. Jade and Raiden leave him there to take Jade to the Netherrealm, so I guess Kuai stayed behind to shut down the factory and deal with Frost?
After that, we see Frost in Shao Kahn's chapter, and she's in charge of the Lin Kuei Temple, and the cyber Lin Kuei call her grandmaster. Sonya foreshadows that something terrible must've happened to Kuai.
Which brings us to Shinnok's chapter... where we see Cyber Sub. Now, the thing is-Kuai (a little ooc if you ask me) states before that he intends to kill Frost.
But seeing as Frost was defeated when Jade and Raiden left, possibly even unconscious at Kuai's very feet... you'd think he'd have just finished the job. He's generally a pragmatic character and prefers to get things done as efficiently as possible. But obviously that's not what happened.
So. I'm going to go a little wishful thinking here, but what if his ooc amounts of open hostility... were just a façade?
He's REALLY adamant about handling things himself, almost like he wants Jade and Raiden to get fed up with him and leave... so he can salvage the situation himself? Frost has done almost Rain-level things at this point in the story, and she's made her bed for grave punishment. But if Kuai really cares for her, which I think he does, he could make a show of doling out that punishment and spare her from what someone else would do, while in reality trying to reason with her and fix things.
So, here's what I imagine: Raiden and Jade leave. Kuai shuts down the factory and sits by Frost's side, waiting for her to wake. He wants to talk to her, figure out how he failed her, but Frost takes him off guard and gets him with something. Ice dagger, neck snapping, whatever. And we get Cyber Sub-Zero.
Idk, I just don't want to believe MKO Kuai is that hostile towards his former pupil because he was perfectly courteous in his khronicle and in Scorpion's chapter. (Even if he has every right to, seeing as Frost cyberized his whole clan.)
[MK Onslaught Spoilers]
So, Cyber Sub-Zero has just been added to MKO... but something about him might surprise you.
FROST cyberized him??!?!??
And like. Ok, Frost is evil I guess. Nothing new. But... the "I've made him a believer"... It makes me think she only ever wanted her dad sifu's approval, but never felt good enough. I do love Kuai Liang but I don't think the way he was raised made him very good at positive motivation. No matter how proud he was of Frost, he could only ever show it in subtle ways, which Frost's insecurities prevented her from seeing. And now, she's finally proven her worth. (In her eyes)
Meanwhile, Kuai is probably having 1001 crises in his brain as he tries to fight the programming.
...
....I just want my ice father&daughter to be happy
