SO. I finally played Khaos Reigns...
And I'm disappointed, of course, but surprisingly they tried to do something almost interesting with the brothers. Even if they failed miserably. And I want to talk about it, so uhh, welcome to my ted talk. (Lol btw I love how Tomas stops existing in KR, guess Yuri Lowenthal was busy?)
Skip the part in lines if you want to get straight to the scene I want to talk about!
--------
I want to start by saying that during the entirety of the DLC story, Kuai Liang made my blood pressure steadily rise higher. At this point this isn't even character assasination, it's more like character massacre. I'm not even going to go into how much I hate the whole Harumi thing, maybe in another post, but the way he acts, especially towards Cyrax, is Hanzo Hasashi levels of stupid and unnecessary. And I get that he's Scorpion now, but I kind of wish they'd just made "Scorpion" adopted bro Hanzo and removed Kuai or something to spare him this terrible fate.
He doesn't react at all to his wedding guests being killed, has to be "calmee down" TWICE by Harumi and is generally an asshat in every scene he appears in. Bi-Han is also an asshat but the first story already made me accept that so he gets a pass. The first story also made me accept that he's a fucking idiot so I'm gaslighting mtself into being okay with him jumping into the portal. With that out of the way, let's get to what they set up and proceeded to not be able to use.
-------
In the last act, we get Noob Saibot with kameo Scorpion fighting against Khaos Scorpion and Sub-Zero, in both combinations like the DLC likes to do. But first, they fight Khaos Cyrax and Sektor.
I've stopped comparing the characters to their previous counterparts, because NRS is obviously going nurture here even if they want to say they're doing nature. Their interactions shed a little light on what their relationship might've been like before the Ying Fortress, and we get these moments:

Bi-Han is snappy, demeaning and wants to do everything by himself. Kuai says "Of course. You have no flaws," like it was a common occurrence for Bi-Han to criticize him while accepting none himself.

This is where Khaos Sub-Zero comes in. Bi-Han pushes Kuai away lowkey violently when Kuai tries to come to his side, and proceeds to try to 1v1 Sub but they're pretty evenly matched.

This again paints a picture of Bi-Han constantly holding his brothers back to be on top and do it himself, and I feel like if they wanted to go this route they should've done it from the first story. The Bi-Han there just seemed stir-crazy and with misguided ambition. Not.. the implications here. It's like the story is doing all it can to give Scorpion(not calling him Kuai) some leeway for his own asshollery simply due to someone's favoritism of him. He can't be wrong.

But then, we have the Khaos brothers, who are still... well, brothers. There's no bad blood between them as far as we can see, they're how I imagine they would be in the og timeline before Bi's death plus some pyromancy.
So there's a setup here of them fighting their mirror selves, evil mirror selves at that, but the mirrors are actually doing better between them than they are.
Neither brother comments on this, nor is it granted any significance whatsoever. Though what does happen is a little interesting and something can be squeezed out of it.
Bi-Han brutally kills the two of them, despite Kuai's protests that they could've been questioned. Like, he goes out of his way to creatively dismember Khaos Scorpion. Is he simply testing out his new abilities? Or was he angered by their existence, no crosses to bear, no chasm of differences, just fighting alongside each other.
Isn't that what Bi-Han wanted, at its core? He likes the thrill of the fight. He wants bigger fights and more glory. It was never really that he wanted a kingdom to rule, it just sounded like glory.
Could've worded this better and deeper but idk im tired. What do you guys think?
#mortal kombat#kuai liang#bi-han#scorpion#noob saibot#khaos reigns#dominic when I get my hands on you!!#gawdd I wish we had tundra n sub brotherhood with hanzo on the side instead..

I don't know this person and I'm not even too into mw anymore, but wow dude you are being way too harsh.
I mean, yeah the concept is very in-your-face and kind of stale, and messily executed besides. Can't say I'm a fan. But I get what they're going for and as you can see there's a lot of people who really liked it. And of course they did: this is obviously made by a teenager or at least someone young, and the same goes for their audience.
Perfect human übermensch Curly and comically distraught Jimmy is a very simple concept and most of your qualms come from the person taking the easiest steps tı make them foils to each other. Of course there are some traits that are generally undesirable. Contrasting them with generally desirable traits in a non-nuanced way doesn't make the writer a bigot. It just makes them a novice writer who's more focused on the shipping aspect of the thing anyways, which is completely understandable for a fan project.
Also, real life: mentally ill people can be draining to the people around them. This can be partially their fault or not their fault at all, depending on the case. Addicts also harm their loved ones, even if just by harming themselves. You can't flowers and rainbows will that away. Yes, all addicts should seek to recover as soon as they possibly can.
Nobody has said a word about not deserving love. Having things about you you need to change doesn't mean you're unworthy of love, but you still must work to change those things regardless. We don't do better to deserve love, we do it to make the lives of ourselves and the people we love better.
And how exactly is this person putting down bottoms? I think this is your own projection. Let me tell you something, fandom spaces (esp Tumblr) are a place where women are generally the majority and subconsciously or not we tend to make our favorites the bottom because they kind of serve as a self insert. You may reject this idea, but I think you'l find merit to it once you do some observation. And considering people like to make their faves suffer, I can tell Jimmy is the bottom simply because the artist likes him more. There's no conspiracy here.
Lastly: my GOODNESS. Whitewashing? In which universe is the guy below not white? Who's white then, Casper the friendly ghost?
So yeah. Let's not bully a (likely) teenager just trying to make some art. C'mon now. Don't like it, scroll.
(Also lmao like obv artist doesn't hate hyperpop. If you can't tell that they mean Jimmy isn't good at it with the quotation marks, you gotta take some comprehension classes man it can't be good for you to get so mad so frequently)

Yeah, I think Ellison is very misunderstood in the fandom. Personally, I was introduced to him through ihnmaims, but I enjoyed his style so much I ended up reading more of his work and even watching his documentary.
I'm going to say this: I don't think he was a bad guy. In fact I really respect his work and his view on life. The only gripes I have with him are the fact that he was close friends with Neil Gaiman and that women don't usually have much of a focus in his storytelling.
With the first one, there's a significant age difference between him and Gaiman. I don't think he had to have known everything the guy was doing. From the doc it just seems like they were chilling out lol. But it's true that he received his grandmastership award thing from Gaiman's hands.
With the second, I can't really say much because he's written a LOT and I've only really scratched the surface. But the only female mc I remember is a TV show hostess who ends up like. Forever kidnapped by aliens at the end. Maybe that's because I was going more by compilations of his stories and the better ones have male protags. He's written a lot of other forms of media besides that, so.
Anyway, he's also done some crazy shit that includes physically assaulting a bad publisher (worse than intended), the mailing dead rodents thing etc. etc. Honestly, yeah he's a menace but it's like. Malicious compliance and/or righteous fury gone overboard. Personally doesn't bother me too much. I think people get lost in the reports from the time detailing Ellison as a disruptive maniac asshole, not realizing when the guy lived. He started being a hit in the sixties. For reference, the whole satanic panic thing happened in the eighties. Imagine how much more rigid the culture was then. I'm pretty sure he'd be considered a tame celebrity today.
Oh yeah, he also says he hates his fans, but he explains this in many interviews and the documentary. It's people dedicating their lives to media in an unhealthy way that he dislikes, along with people consuming without understanding. I think a lot of people agree, they'd just put it in a nicer way.
It's also good to remember that he was very much an activist with progressive views and even walked with MLK jr. in '65, and also bashed the Vietnam war when he could. I mean, I don't think much more can be expected from a guy born in 1934.
TLDR; I don't think Ellison was a bad guy. I think the fandom just doesn't know how to consider things in historical context.
something about the rise of the IHNMAIMS fandom that i saw someone else point out that is. really funny to me is how people perceived Harlan Ellison.
like. personally i am very mixed leaning negative on my opinion of him as a person but the whole "AM is harlans insert" thing escalating into "Harlan Ellison is a horrible evil sadist who probably would kill babies. #trustme" is just so
so fucking funny
Also the "AM humanization is missing the point of his character" thing WAS funny cause clearly people who agreed with that point didn't understand anything about the story OR AM at all.
but then it stopped being funny when the craze for IHNMAIMS started becoming a Harlan hate-o-meter. where people were simply drawing things just to piss other people off and then say "Harlan would hate you too!!" Which made me want to put a gun in my mouth oh my god that shit was so obnoxious.
I dont know where I was going with this. uhhhh like and subscribe for more

wiggle and wriggle seem so close that they should be the same word but if The Wiggles became The Wriggles, that would make me uncomfortable ngl
#tbh to me wiggle is more of a casual thing#but wriggle has like. a struggle to it if that makes sense?#of course wiggle can also be used in a struggling context but I feel like wriggle is much more suitable#lol idk

It's so interesting to me how AM treats Ted in the game compared to the others. Nimdok, he's trying to get something out of-but Ellen, Benny and Gorrister.. he's just being a pest to them, and they tell him off for it in return. And then there's Ted. (Some of these apply for Nimdok as well, but it's just because Nimdok isn't very.. lucid)
In everyone else's intros, AM makes his disdain very clear. The tones he uses for Gorrister and Benny, the mockery he bestows on Ellen. But for Ted, he's all coaxing and conspiratory. He hates Ted, and Ted knows this, but not as much as the others do, he wants Ted to think.
And the tortures. I once saw someone mention how, while everyone's grappling with thirst or hunger, Ted doesn't even make a comment about it when he's in a kitchen. He's not being tested with bodily needs to the same degree as the others. I think this is because-don't get me wrong. AM doesn't like Ted. He doesn't even hate him less.
But Ted has his favor. See, the others won't play AM's games at his level. They don't deify him, like Ted does, they don't anthropomorphize him. They don't recognize his conscience, they don't treat him as a living thing. So, they get the most base tortures someone could be subjected to, on top of everything else. (Though this part is kind of game-specific) For Ted, AM lets up on his body to push his psyche instead. He speaks to Ted the most because Ted responds to him as if he were speaking to a human. AM needs this.
Now, when I first played the game, it was really weird to me how AM brought up sex not once but twice with Ted. But now I think it's really telling. While AM knows about shame and morality and ethics and human culture, he doesn't understand them. He knows it hurts Ellen to have sex without her heart being in it, and he knows why humans look down on it, but he doesn't get it. For that matter, he knows about endorphins and hormones but he still doesn't know what it's like to want sex, to enjoy it.
So he uses Ted to observe it. The others don't respond like he does. And he's got to disguise it, so he pulls on Ted's past and shoves an old hag at him. Then, he gives him a "psych!" with the witch, because if Ted were to take a step back and look at his situation he'd realize how indulgent AM is being. And since AM's not gonna be indulging him, that means he's indulging himself. Mortifying for AM.
Though there is another thing I wanna touch on here, and I think it's the thing that makes AM call him "sweetheart": Ted is desperate for validation. And he wants it from AM. His paranoia keeps him from trusting the others, but AM already hurts him, so he's gotta be honest, right? I think this gives AM such a kick. With absolutely minimal effort, he can put Ted even more on edge about the others hating him, because he's getting treated better than them, isn't he? (Spoiler: he really, really isn't. Poor Ted)
Anyway yeah. Also, I think there's a bit of a difference between game and book Ted: game Ted seems a little more.. gone? He was basically manic pixie dreamgirling around during his psychodrama, emphasis on manic. Book Ted is a little bit more grounded, but only barely. They're floaty in the head in different ways, I think.
Sorry for the long rant lol hope it made sense in the end! I just love Ted and AM's fucked up.. everything :')
Just got to the witch and.. it’s so weird how it gives you the option to talk about sleeping with her. All the older women gives you the opportunity to ask to sleep with them. Another example of AM using their pasts/traumas against them. AM when I catch you AM. Also he had a ‘knack for fixing things’, that’s so cute. Maybe if he wasn’t so messed up in the book he could’ve used that to help them in some ways.
He’s so paranoid in this too. Also, the comment about the dark makes me wonder if AMs ever used this fear against him. Surely he has. I think in the book when he runs from whatever creature he thinks he sees ties to this. He’s afraid of the dark and very afraid of whatever could be in the dark
