WNBA Star Britney Greiner Arrested in Russia
Britney Greiner, WNBA basketball player and Olympic gold medalist, was arrested in Russia after customs officials discovered hemp vape cartridges inside her luggage. The exact date she was arrested is unclear, but reports now say it was in February.
Griner is well-known for traveling to Russia, where she has played for teams in the WNBA off-season. Many female athletes supplement their income by playing overseas during winter months, and recently, Griner has also played for Russia UMMC Ekaterinburg in FIBA Women’s EuroLeague play.
Her arrest spotlights the troubling trend of American athletes facing significant international consequences for possession of cannabis – even as cannabis legalization spreads across the United States, Canada, Mexico, and many other countries.
The WNBA All-Star has drawn the attention of the criminal justice system in Russia concerning recreational or medicinal cannabis. In her case, possession can carry up to 10 years in prison if found with just two grams in her luggage.
When the news of Greiner’s detainment by Russian authorities came to light, it sent waves across social media. The main question that arose: how did this remain silent for so long? One would think such an arrest would be headline news and all over the internet. Surprisingly there hasn’t been any mention of one of the biggest stars in women’s basketball being arrested in Russia.
Greiner is a professional basketball player for the Chicago Sky. As one of WNBA’s biggest stars, she still has to work off-season to supplement her pay. Most WNBA players also have to travel overseas and play in E.U. basketball leagues. Not being accustomed to laws in other countries has led to incidents like Greiner’s.
The Russian government and the U.S. government have made very few official statements about her arrest. This leads to the question- why? We hope this incident is dealt with quickly and Greiner will be back home soon.

Estonian Cannabis Variety Offers Low Levels of THC
The EOPC is one of the largest producers in Europe for organic hemp and boasts one of the largest dehulling plants producing products for wholesale and white label sales. EOPC ships to more than 20 countries around the world and all of their food products are made from the industrial hemp plant grown in Estonia and processed according to ISO 22000, organic label, and HACCP standards.
The new strain of hemp from Estonia has less than 0.03% THC, giving farmers an option to stay within Europe's limit of just 0.2%. The new variety, called Estica, was developed by the Estonian Organic Protein Foundation (EOPC) in cooperation with Dutch company Globe Seeds BV.
“We wanted to create a variety with a larger seed size, suitable for growing in our region,” Ardi Uja, CEO of EOPC, said.
Uja reported that Estica was successfully tested and developed in the last four years. Estica can produce 1.4-1.6 tons of grain per hectare and very low THC levels in the seeds.
With Estica, food producers that use it for the seeds and oil no longer have to worry about the THC levels in their products. Uja sees initial markets for this variety across Europe because it is well below the restricted cannabis guidelines within Europewide Union borders (EU).
The new variety was registered in the European Union Catalog of Plant Varieties in December 2021; this means that farmers who grow Estica are now eligible to receive EU agricultural subsidies.
The future of EOPC is bright as it expanded its business into new markets with the help of Estica. “Demand is growing year by year, and it is good to see that consumers are more and more acknowledging the benefits of hemp products. It shows that hemp has arrived as a staple in consumers’ diets,” he said.
"The growth shows that the sector has built a solid foundation, and hemp seed food is not just advertising, short term,” he added.

N.Y. Governor Kathy Hochul Bill to Speed Up Marijuana Cultivation
New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed a conditional cannabis cultivation bill into law on Tuesday, which will allow some growers to begin production this spring. The license conditionally grants accelerated access for adult-use programs while also helping the state's farmers who have been waiting patiently in anticipation of legalization.
“I am proud to sign this law, which positions New York’s growers to be the first to grow cannabis and catalyze the new safe, fair and inclusive industry we are building,” Hochul said.
“The State of New York will continue to lead in fulfilling our commitment to bring economic opportunity and growth to all New Yorkers in every corner of our great state,” Hochul added.
The governor's office says that with a conditional adult cannabis cultivation license, growers can grow outdoors or in a greenhouse for up to two years from the issuance of their card. They are also allowed to produce and distribute products without obtaining an additional processor/distributor license until June 1, 2023.
When it comes to the legal limits for outdoor and greenhouse growing operations, there are a few things to know. State officials say growers can have up to one acre of their outdoor flower canopy or 25 thousand square feet in a greenhouse and can use up to 20 artificial lights.
The Office of Cannabis Management (OCM) will be working hard to create an application process and open up their program as soon as possible. To qualify for a conditional adult cannabis cultivation license, you need to have been approved as an industrial hemp research partner by the Department of Agriculture and Markets over two years out of the last four years, and in good standing as of December 31, 2021.
The governor announced that license holders must also participate in a social equity mentorship program where they provide training to people who are interested in cannabis cultivation and processing. Farmers will have met sustainability requirements so hemp can be grown in an environmentally conscious way.
In New York, cannabis became legal under a law known as the Marijuana Regulation and Taxes Act (MRTA). However, there is still no licensing for the adult use of marijuana. The current law in New York allows for medical use only. The scope of eligibility has recently been expanded, and this program will create a new system that certification/registration with cannabis as an appropriate condition to treat by any practitioner who deems it necessary.

Hemp Was A Staple In Chinese Tang Dynasty
Hemp Was A Staple In Chinese Tang Dynasty
Researchers studying an ancient tomb in China found evidence that cannabis was a food crop during the Tang Dynasty, which was over 1,000 years ago. Previous research in Chinese civilizations has shown that cannabis was an important crop, with plant’s seeds consumed in a type of porridge or brewed into a relaxing tea.
Cannabis Discovered in an Ancient Cemetery
In 2019, an ancient tomb was discovered by construction workers at a school playground construction site near Taiyuan City of Shanxi province, China. Researchers determined that it was the tomb of Guo Xing, a cavalry officer who fought in a series of fierce battles on the Korean Peninsula during the early Tang Dynasty (618-907).
The remarkably dry environment had preserved precious frescoes and also contained a jar of cannabis seeds and the remains from their husks. “The cannabis was stored in a pot on the coffin bed among other staple grains such as millet,” said Jin Guyun, a professor at the School of History and Culture at Shandong University. The Hemp seeds they found were significantly larger than those today, indicating that it was specifically cultivated for grain. The researchers noted that the seeds were well preserved, and some still showed their original color. The large seeds with husks on them reduced the chance of mold and prolonged storage time. They may also stimulate nerves when consumed, for religious or medicinal purposes.
Hemp Used as Food, Fiber, and Medicine
During the Tang Dynasty, hemp was an important crop, providing food and fiber for an ancient civilization. But it appears that rice was more common in this region back because the weather was wetter and much warmer.
The Guo Xing family’s tomb contained many artifacts, however it did not include rice which surprised researchers. Instead, they found hemp seeds.
Hemp was an integral part of ancient Chinese culture for centuries and was known as one of five staple crops identified in Wu Gu - food that would sustain the people during difficult times and help them through illnesses or life events like births, deaths, etc.

Five Insurances Cannabis Businesses Need in 2022
With the legal cannabis market projected to grow 20-30% per year, there are several risks for any business in this industry. To protect your business, you need to have insurance, and here are the top five you need in 2022.
General Liability Insurance
Businesses should have general liability insurance to protect them from various claims, including personal injury, bodily harm, and property damage. Since this coverage is not always required for cannabis licenses, many businesses are tempted to do without it. The reality is that just one lawsuit has the potential to cripple your business. Accidents can and will happen in any industry or line of work.
Property & Casualty Insurance
Any business needs to protect their assets from any type of potential loss. Property and Casualty (P&C) insurance provides coverage for fire, lightning strikes, explosions/implosions, as well as riots, and even terrorism.
This type of insurance covers property, as well as contents in your place of business, including office furniture, computers, inventory and other essential assets. There are
also add-ons to this policy that will also provide financial help until your business is back up and running.
Product Liability/Product Recalls
The recent surge in product liability cases has made many businesses nervous. Product recalls and lawsuits from personal injury victims will affect any business in the cannabis industry. Legal issues can also arise from mislabeled products or contaminated products.
Product liability insurance is often overlooked, especially by small to mid-size businesses. However, it’s important for any cannabis business- one lawsuit can bankrupt your reputation and your company.
Cyber/Data Breach Insurance
Cybercrime is one of the biggest risks facing cannabis companies in 2022. From stealing business data from various sources such as seed suppliers, producers, product vendors, consumers, to basically anyone you do business with, these types of crimes can financially cripple everyone involved. This also opens your business to various lawsuits.
Without Cyber and data breach insurance, your business will be responsible for legal bills, significant revenue loss, and possible regulatory fines and penalties. To protect your company, this insurance is a must-have for any business in the cannabis industry in 2022.
Directors & Officers Insurance
Directors and Officers (D & O) insurance protects corporate leaders from being personally liable in case the company is sued by anyone, including investors, employees, vendors, customers, and others while managing the company. This insurance helps companies attract and retain qualified management leaders.
D&O Insurance is often the most overlooked coverage, but it should be a priority for any business planning to grow. Not only does it protect your current management, but it can attract new talent and investors to your company.
Risk assessment and management for any company in the cannabis industry needs to be a top priority in their operational plans in 2022.
