Wordplay: Fazed, Phased, Pique, and Peak
I know I've made a post about one of these words before, but I still see it happening all the time so I thought I'd post it again with another one that's worth mentioning. Most of the time people don't even realize they're making a mistake between each word and its pair, so voila, be educated!
To be fazed is to be disconcerted or taken aback. To be phased is to be done in stages.
I see phased used instead of fazed all the time. You'd use fazed in a sentence like this one:
She was hardly fazed by his actions.
If you really wanted to, you could rewrite it like this:
She was hardly taken aback by his actions.
You'd use phased in a sentence like this:
The company phased out the defective model.
You could rewrite it like this:
The company gradually got rid of the defective model.
To remember which word you should use, think of it this way: if it's an action, it's probably phased. If it's a reaction, it's probably fazed.
Now on to the second word pair!
To pique is to garner interest. To peak is to reach the top. Both are generally used in the past tense, but not always.
I see people use peak instead of pique all too often, unfortunately.
You'd use pique in a sentence like this:
You've piqued my curiosity.
It can be rewritten like so:
You've gotten me interested.
You'd use peak in a sentence like this:
The athlete peaked at twenty-two.
You can rewrite it like this:
The athlete reached his prime at twenty-two.
It can be confusing because you are, in fact, at the peak of your interest when your interest is piqued. Just think of it this way: if the p-word in question modified a noun like "curiosity" or "interest," use pique. If you're describing the pinnacle or top or something, use peak.
(For you technical types: peak typically comes before a prepositional phrase, e.g. "the peak of his career," "the peak of my interest," "the peak of the mountain.")
Go forth, my pretties, and harness the English language correctly! (At least those four words of it, anyway.)

It is now 2012, 8 years since the original plastics and we all know how that story went. Well after that generation graduated a whole new group of students came in. They kept peace in the high school and everyone was happy. But now it seems that North Shore is going back to it’s old ways. This new generation’s talent is labeling people and it seems like everyone does it. If you walk in the cafeteria you can see each clique sitting together. You’ve got your jocks, the hotties, the nerds, your classic school druggies and rebels, and those major sluts that’d love to steal your boyfriend. Then you got the drama, art, and music geeks, the wallflowers, those so original hipsters, and school royalty, the plastics.
Always beware the plastics.
The school seemed fine with the social classes ranking The Plastics, The Hotties, The Jocks, The Sluts, The Hipsters, The Druggies/Rebels, The Drama/Art/Music Geeks, The Wallflowers, and then The Nerds. But suddenly it seemed as if the school was on the verge of insanity. The Druggies fighting the Jocks, the Sluts hooking up with the Nerds. The Hotties being friends with the Drama/Art Music Geeks. The Hipsters and the Wallflowers eating lunch together. The Plastics are freaking out, trying to keep their kingdom under control and stay in power. But it seems there is about to be a huge shift in power and a huge change up in the cliques.

“Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light; I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.”
2026. Many years have passed since Kingsley Shacklebot was killed, and a new reign had placed itself onto the Wizarding World, burning down the universe that stood behind him, to ascend out of those ashes like a Phoenix, a toy one with artificial wings. The Luminous, they called themselves, as they brought a brighter world, where magic was worshipped, were magic was light, was fire, was death.
Magic, light, truth, and pure thoughts. In such view is no place for tainted words, from doomed lips. You are with them, or you are scum. That's what you learned, that's what they have told you. But what will happen when tragedy comes down on you, and you are forced to confront yourself with your deepest principles? On whose side will you place yourself? Will you support the source of the Light itself, or will you join Coal Dust, the dark spot, the cancer that had nested itself in the world of light they had created? The choice is yours.
-
The Luminous is a Next Generation, Harry Potter AU roleplay, rated mature, whose opening date is yet to be determined.

It is raining. You’re looking for shelter when your eyes alight on a familiar sight: the doorman of the speakeasy, one of Francesca’s joints, looking as gruff and generally disagreeable as ever, his eyes scanning the street for potential threats. As his eyes alight on you, you know you’re one of said threats.
Striding up to the man and blinking the rainwater from your eyes, you offer him a smile and wait for his verdict. His eyes take you in, scanning your person once, twice, before alighting on your face. Then, after a tense moment of waiting, he says the word you’ve been waiting for: “password?”
The phrase you speak is right, of course. You cough a little as you enter, your lungs protesting the heavy smoke permeating the air. It is the same group of Chicago nightlife you remember, lined wall-to-wall with the rich and the ragged and the reckless, of which all are now looking at you. Your neck heats up under their gaze as you walk to the bar, sitting down on a barstool before anyone can protest your arrival.
“What can I get you?” The bartender’s voice is tinged with disapproval.
“Whiskey,” you say simply, turning to the flapper dame who is currently batting her eyelashes at you.
The date is June 7th, 1925, and as the scent of gasoline hits your nostrils, you realize that you are gonna have a very long night.
Tread Softly is a mature roleplay set in Prohibition-Era Chicago. There’s going to be violence, sex, and lots and lots of drama, so if that appeals come on in! If not, however, we’ll be sad to see you go, but it’s for the best!

Statistics show that most mortals sell their souls for five reasons: sex, money, power, revenge, and love. In that order. Most of the residents of Camden helped build this statistics by selling their souls to Imps, years ago.
Even after selling their souls, the now immortals try to live a normal life, but with Lucifer for a boss, they can’t just forget their duties and settle down for domestic bliss. These creatures live among humans, and they have no idea that something wicked is at work in London’s demon underground…

Brush making 101
Do not make a brush with cut-off edges.
It defeats the entire purpose because you can't use it to add designs to your graphic without having to make it the size of the entire graphic, and one of the reasons people download brushes is for the adjustable size.
Just don't do it. Do. Not. Do. It.

Portia Dior | 28 | Manages the Lombardi’s main drug front | “Don’t tempt fate.” | Open
(+) Business-oriented, level-headed, sees people for who they really are (-) Superstitious, lonely, has trust issues
Portia Dior means business. She is always on top of whatever it is she’s trying to accomplish at a given time and will let nothing and no one stop her—even her superiors, if necessary. However, she is a big believer in fate and will sometimes miss opportunities because she’s waiting for “the stars to align,” whatever that means.
One source of Lombardi income comes from their drug racket, of which Portia is queen. She makes sure all the drug money arrives in the right amounts from the right people, manages each dealer, and ensured that the business works like a well-oiled machine. She takes pride in her small empire and places it above her loyalty to the Lombardi.
In the Dior family, business is business. Forget loyalty—it’s all about moving up, locking in, and securing your fortune. Her father, a prominent businessman planted very firmly in Giovanni Macini’s pocket, spoke that mantra to her countless times, and her mother, a banker and manager of the family’s funds, made sure it stuck. Her parents had gotten together as a monetary alliance, and a monetary alliance it stayed until her father’s death in the Great War.
Though many expected Portia to take up the reigns where her father left off, she had always disliked the way Giovanni treated him and didn’t want to relegate herself to a life of taking orders from someone who didn’t respect the nature of her business. Instead she let her father’s business go to his second-in-command and took a deal she thought far sweeter: her family’s reputation preceded her and thus Francesca Lombardi offered her a position as the head of the Lombardi drug operation, the only string attached being that she, unlike her father, was salaried. She’d have the freedom to run the business how she chose (as long as it remained profitable, of course) and no one would be able to breathe over her shoulder the way Giovanni had over her father’s.
Naturally, the fact that she was “switching allegiances” raised gossip and suspicion among the other Chicago residents. Some said her father had never been loyal to Giovanni in the first place; some said the two had had a falling out, leading to a change in the family. Still others said Portia herself was just playing the two sides and could not be trusted. None, however, saw the obvious: the Diors simply did not value loyalty, a concept that the very partisan people of Chicago were not ready to accept.
Regardless of the rumors, Portia rose above the doubt to become a capable and shrewd leader of her own little empire. Many still suspected that she was untrustworthy, but that was alright with her—she didn’t trust them, either. Though it led to somewhat of a lonely life for her, she made sure to keep those who might corrupt her business or her reputation at arm’s length, and so far it has worked quite swimmingly for her.
Nowadays she is rich and, as far as anyone knows, happy. She runs things with an iron first and is close with few. One of the people she likes more than others is Ryan Sharpe, mostly because he keeps things fresh and interesting for her. He’s done her a few favors in the past when customers tried to make off with her drugs without paying, so she tries to help him out here and there as well. Phillip Wakefield, a cop who’s been dabbling in Lombardi business, has also made it onto her radar. She’s been keeping tabs on him just in case he does something stupid—or smart, in which case she’ll be poised to snatch him up into her service. Her gift for seeing the true intentions of others has made her notice Rory Alfonso, too, mostly out of amusement. He runs among many circles, collecting up secrets wherever he goes, and thinks himself invinsible. Though she has only spoken to him a few times, she’s made sure to keep an eye on him in case he becomes a problem.
