The old port city of Buenaventura, Colombia is not new to violence – its predominately Afro-Colombian residents have witnessed the bloodshed for decades as guerillas and paramilitaries have fought over control of Colombia's busiest port. But in the last two years, violence has spiked, unprecedented acts of brutality such as the live dismemberment of victims have become commonplace. In 2014, Human Rights Watch conducted an in-depth investigation of the violence and understandably named Buenaventura the nation's deadliest city. A turf war among rising narco-trafficking, neo-paramilitary groups – the Urabenos and the Empresa – may be the cause of the rise in homicide rates, according to local news stories. But local residents sense a more sinister plot. In a Vice News documentary, local activist Nora Castillo noted the city hopes to demolish the epicenter of the violence, a series of slums sitting on Pacific coastal waters, and relocate its residents to a town further inland. The land, void of its original inhabitants, would become a boardwalk, a major developmental plan meant to build Buenaventura's potential as a tropical, tourist location. Many residents do not want to leave, but the surge in violence have forced more than 13,000 residents to abandon their homes in 2013 alone.
As this local resident explains, if the city is being transformed into a safer, more prosperous city, why should its poor and black residents be excluded and ultimately pay the price?

Venezuela's oldest daily newspaper, El Impulso, is the latest publication to narrowly avert a shutdown amid an ongoing newsprint (paper) shortage that has affected nearly 40 newspapers and
This semester I'll be writing blog posts for the Knight Center about Latin American media. This is a recent blog post I wrote about the newsprint shortage affecting Venezuelan newspapers.

And speaking of investments, does anyone remember when Texas launched its war on gangsta rap? No surprise, George W. Bush was behind this too.

The UT System will further consider divesting funds from Russia as relations between the U.S. and the Russian governments worsen because of conflict in Ukraine, according to System officials.
The idea that the UT System Regents are even considering divesting from Russia after refusing to divest from apartheid South Africa and rejecting students' efforts to implement social responsibility policies in UTIMCO is outrageous. Why are they pretending they care about freedom and justice when I know the Regents would not consider divesting from Israel for a second.

This video is part of a news package I worked on this summer about the decline of the Tejano bar in Austin. For the past ten years, gentrification has forced the Tejano bars that lined East Sixth Street out of business. Now only one bar remains: La Perla. Over the course of a few weeks, I interviewed about six regulars of La Perla about their opinions on the changes in their neighborhoods. This video shows some of those voices.
