The staring wasn’t missed, and despite his ears turning a warm red from the unwarranted attention, Keito stared back at both Rei and Kuro, his expression a mix of annoyance and confusion. “What? Why are you both looking at me like that??” he asked, clearly oblivious to the implications of him outright calling Rei ‘beautiful’. Rei could only make a self-conscious cough behind his closed fist in reply, gaze still averted to the side, which only served to make Keito huff even grouchier in return. How could anyone write about romance and still be clueless about it in real life…
But, just as Kuro had felt, Keito’s obliviousness to romantic implications were the least of their worries. Rei couldn’t tell on whose side Kuro would eventually end up later, but he could see, sense the redhead’s discomfort over the matter in regards to the vampire’s blood consumption. However, Rei also wasn’t surprised that Kuro would still stick to Keito’s side of the argument.
“The children, such good children…They…They shouldn’t become involved in this; that is my wish.” Rei said, strongly shaking his head at the thought of having to take the blood from any of their juniors. “I do not wish to involve anyone else into this matter!” “What are you to do then, wait until you become hungry enough to attack a second time?” Keito asked, his expression one of cold unbelief. After all, Rei had already slipped off his self-control once; he couldn’t be trusted fully now. “You might as well make me drink poison…” Rei muttered under his breath. “No one’s saying that, Sakuma;” the mutter didn’t escape Keito’s sharp hearing, “why are you being so bull-headed—We are trying to find a compromise here, can’t you see that?!” “And I’m telling you; I know myself more than anyone! I’m not letting a second incident happen again!” The look of Keito’s face in response made Rei whine. “Please, humans shouldn’t get involved—” “It’s a little too late for that now, don’t you think? You’ve already involved me back at the graveyard.” Keito heaved a weary sigh, taking off his glasses to massage the bridge of his nose before putting them back on. “Look; we don’t want this incident come public either, hence why we’re discussing about taking precautions.”
If you don’t want to involve our juniors,” Keito glanced towards Kuro, then looked at Rei. “then you wouldn’t mind involving those who are already involved to become 'designated donors’, right?” “What do you mean…” “My offer still stands; take my blood.” “Oh no…No, no…I can’t; not yours, Hasumi-kun!” “What are you being so picky for? What’s wrong with my blood?!”
And then, Kuro just had to mention Madara.
Rei stiffened in response, while Keito outwardly glared in irritation. An awkward silence covered the room, especially after interrupting a heated argument. After a few moments, Rei was the first to speak. “He—Mikejima-kun knows. I’ve refused him every time he’d offer…” he answered, almost in a frightened whisper, looking as though Madara was listening in on them. “He mustn’t know about this…I fear that he’ll not stop nor listen anymore now that an 'exception’ had been made.” “Great,” Keito hissed, clearly annoyed at the information laid out. “Just great! Exactly what we need: a pest!”
“…Can we have him as the blood sacrifice instead?” “I think not, Hasumi-kun!!”
And thus, the back-and-forth exchange between childhood friends continued, going somewhere, yet simultaneously nowhere. Between Keito’s insistence on getting involved in Rei’s personal affairs and Rei’s protests of handling them himself, Kuro could feel himself slowly, but surely losing his patience; both Akatsuki members would be at their wit’s end trying to reason with the stubborn vampire. The distrust between both parties only grew as they presented their arguments in direct conflict with each other, but it was undeniable that humans were involved now, whether Rei liked it or not. Similarly, Kuro couldn’t simply turn a blind eye to this, regardless of his own feelings on the matter.
His eyes meet Keito’s when he acknowledges that there should be designated donors to regularly provide Rei with blood and without an exchange of words, Kuro already understood. He’d prepared himself for the possibility, even if the thought of becoming a living blood bag for a vampire made him apprehensive. It’s when Keito offers his blood again, however, that triggers a protective response in Kuro, as he places a firm hand upon his shoulder as if to tell him to ‘stand down.’ Realizing how sudden it must’ve seemed, he’s quick to release him with an apologetic look, before returning to the discussion at hand in an attempt to redirect their attention.
“ Figured he’d already know... ” Unbeknownst to him, that statement would have a double meaning, and Kuro realized that bringing up Madara would be a loaded topic given his relation to those involved in the situation. However, he felt it necessary to bring up, knowing the fallout that could happen between them if the incident came to light. Thus, the redhead can only give Rei a look of disbelief when he admitted that he rejected even Madara’s offer, a testament to just how far Rei’s stubbornness went. “ Yeah, but I feel like when it comes to him, it ain’t a matter of ‘if’, it’s a matter of ‘when.’ It’d be all well and good if you could just accept ‘im as the donor from here on out but with me in the picture, it sure complicates things, doesn’t it... ”
His mouth twists into a wry smile at the thought, since he hoped he’d be able to avoid further confrontation with Madara if he could, especially since he felt that their relationship had improved since last year. He didn’t mind his presence, considered him a friendly rival if anything, but now that it’s come to this... Well, he’d cross that bridge when he gets there. For now, they needed to reach an agreement on how to resolve Rei’s issue with blood and Kuro finally proposes his ultimatum.
“ When it comes down to it, it ain’t just about the taste of blood, is it? Takin’ blood from other folks just don’t sit right with you, like you’re carryin’ the burden of it all upon you shoulders - like you always do. Listen, I get not wantin’ to burden others, and wantin’ to handle things on your own, but you don’t have to do this by yourself, y’know. You gotta realize that everyone needs help at some point, so you oughta be more willin’ to accept help from those around you. Learnin’ that... is part of bein’ human, ain’t it? ”
“ So if you’re really adamant about not lettin’ Mikejima in on it, and honestly, I got my own reservations ‘bout Hasumi offerin’ his blood... ” He’s not going to get away with saying that in front of Keito, but he ought to make it clear nonetheless. “ I guess that leaves me. It’ll take some gettin’ used to but... ” He looks up at Rei, his gaze firm and resolute, “ ...this might be for the best, for everyone’s sake, don’tcha think? ”

As it turned out, Rei is a picky eater; that’s certainly a big problem if they were to look out for his well-being, but, thankfully, not an impossible task…
Yet, something didn’t add up.
Rei certainly had expressed a hard dislike for blood in the past, and had kept it up until the present time, hence why he’d settled for tomato juice (and life energy leeched from others) as a substitute. Unfortunately, it was proven to be ineffective in the long run.
However, Keito knew that Rei could drink blood as a child, and it had stopped at some point. Earlier, Kuro had mentioned how Rei’s behavior had changed at the time of the attack, as though the ‘Rei of the past’, Keito had figured, had emerged from the ‘old man’ persona for the chance to feed.
As Rei had rebuilt and fortified his protective barrier, due to certain topics being touched, there’s no more point in trying to whittle it back down now. Once the vampire had decided that he doesn’t want to talk, it’d be nigh-impossible to convince him otherwise. All Keito could do was to throw a questioning look at his old friend.
Perhaps Kuro’s presence was contributing to Rei’s reluctance to talk further; Keito figured he could try to talk to Rei again when they’re alone.
—–
“I suppose I am becoming human…” Rei mused, but grimaced when Kuro once again pressed a previous point: that he still needed to drink blood to stay healthy. “Ah, I…was hoping you’d forget about that.” “Absolutely not. It’s bad enough that you’re not eating…You’re not eating human food properly as is! Holding off on what your body needs is detrimental to your well-being!” “Like you’re one to talk, Hasumi-kun…But, tomato juice can suffice—” “We are not talking about me here! And, no, it doesn’t, and you know it; everybody in this room knows it!” Keito spat in disagreement, cheeks pink when Rei called him out on his equally bad eating habits, and in front of Kuro, no less. “Have you seen yourself in the mirror, Sakuma? You look far better now than when you were on tomato juice!” That made Rei stare, surprised. “What—?” “You’re beautiful again; didn’t you know that??” The stare widened until Rei had to look aside, seemingly flustered. Did Keito know what he’d just said? “A-Ah—In any case,” he made a self-conscious cough, “I do appreciate the concern, both of you. That…”
“That means a lot…But, please; do not force yourselves into thinking that you must shed your own blood for my sake.” “You say that when we all know that either Oogami or Otogari would readily offer you their blood before you even open your mouth.” Keito started counting fingers. “I’m sure even the Aois, or any of our juniors, for that matter—I can think of at least a handful of people who’d be willing to donate to you, even if it means repaying you—” “I was trying not to think about that, Hasumi-kun!”
' ...I feel like I’m sittin’ in at couple’s therapy. ’ The thought crosses his mind as he’s observing the interactions between them, but he holds his tongue and keep the snark to himself after reading the room, knowing full well it’d only add fuel to the fire. However, even he’s caught off-guard by Keito’s comment towards Rei, something he never expected to hear out of Keito’s mouth, and stares at him in bewilderment. It isn’t as if he’s wrong - even Kuro could admit that Rei looked positively radiant, albeit not out loud, seeing as Keito had already done that...
But of course, that isn’t the most pressing matter at the moment. When Keito brings up the list of willing donors, Kuro can’t help but feel a lurching feeling in his stomach as a sense of dread sets in. He has a more subdued reaction compared to Rei, but if he felt as uneasy at the thought as he did, he could only imagine how Rei himself felt and the vampire’s distressed retort that followed immediately spoke for itself. He’s been cornered, forced to confront the inevitable outcome of denying his true nature and the consequences of his actions, to the point even Kuro couldn’t help but feel for him... not that it’d stop him from taking Keito’s side in the discussion.
“ ...Yeah, I don’t doubt that either. Our juniors have always been the earnest sort, but especially those who’ve been under your care, Sakuma. ” Kuro agrees with a knowing nod, but he doesn’t bother to hide the disconcerted look on his face at the thought of those kids becoming blood donors either. He figured there’d be a ‘proper’ way to go about it, like some sort of ritual, which might’ve mitigated the discomfort he felt at the idea, but his sense of responsibility as a senior made him better understand Rei’s position and he tries to reason with him because of it.
“ ...our point bein’, regardless of you bein’ a vampire, those kids couldn’t care less and want to help you ‘cause you’re, well, you. There ain’t nothin’ wrong with acceptin’ goodwill from those around you, ‘specially when you’ve done so much good for ‘em to begin with. That bein’ said, I can imagine this ain’t the sorta thing you want to be common knowledge, so... maybe it’d be for the best to have a ‘designated donor’, or somethin’ like that? ” He’s speaking generally, not offering himself unless there weren’t any other options... until a certain individual that hadn’t been accounted for comes to mind.
“ ...Hold on, Sakuma. This is still related to what we’re talkin’ about, so I’d like to ask ya somethin’ too... about Mikejima. He’s been closely involved with ya for the past several years, right? ...Does he know? Has he been helpin’ you out with gettin’ the blood you need? I’d think he’d be just as willing, knowing him. ”

Keito was remarkably snappy in arguing, not that Rei could blame him. He knew both Keito and Kuro have a point in the matter, but he couldn’t readily accept the obvious solution. Neither could he tell the reason why, not without going out of his comfort zone.
It’s not their problem; they shouldn’t be bothered with it. He’ll find a way. Somehow.
“We wouldn’t be in this loop if this bastard would just stop being so stubborn…!” Keito hissed, frustrated, as Kuro had to jump in between him and Rei to stop the pointless banter. Rei, however, offered no new retorts, and instead was avoiding their gazes, already in the process of hiding himself into his shell. Keito, on the other hand, wasn’t about to give up.
“Sakuma, look; if you are concerned about your family,” Keito figured that had to be it, “surely we can find ways that won’t have to involve them…!” The topic was veering into another topic that Rei didn’t want to discuss. If only Kuro wasn’t being so considerate of him, Rei wouldn’t feel so obliged to return the favor. With the tiniest shake of his head, he responded to Keito’s suggestion. “…That…is not it.” “Sakuma. Sakuma, Kiryu’s right; we’re also looking out for you. If only you would—” “I know.” came Rei’s quiet reply, his gaze still directed at the floor. “I know that. But, I really don’t want to talk about it.”
“…The taste, the mere scent of blood sickens me down to the pit of my stomach. That’s,” Rei heaved a weary breath, as though letting out an embarrassing secret, “That’s all I can tell you.”
How much longer could they keep this up? Rei’s reluctance to speak and the two members of Akatsuki’s persistence in interrogating him caused them to reach a standstill, and while the aggressive approach seemed to whittle away at the wall Rei placed between them, enough to get a few answers out of him, it had now been fortified to the point they likely couldn’t break it down any further. Kuro’s completely silent as Rei confesses a genuine distaste for blood, something he believed had merely been a part of the vampire’s eccentricities until now. He had little reason to doubt him at this point, and simply sighs while shaking his head.
“ ...Guess that’s that then. I’m a bit surprised you really can’t stand blood while bein’ a vampire, but as a human, I ain’t in any position to call you ‘picky’, am I? It’s ‘cause I'm human that I can only imagine how disgusting drinkin’ blood must be. ” A metallic taste fills his mouth at the thought of it, making him gag a little. He doesn’t envy Rei at all, and while he can extend his sympathy for the vampire, he ultimately reiterates their point previously made. “ ...but it doesn’t change the fact that you still need to drink it. ”
“ That bein’ said, is there any way to make it easier for you to stomach, Sakuma? ...Well, if there were, you probably would’ve tried it by now, huh.” There’s genuine thought put in his words even if he’s still a bit lost, since a part of him can’t help but feel that the affairs of the supernatural were out of his league... but because it concerned people he knew, it changed his perspective on the matter. He can’t stay ignorant forever, not after everything he’s witnessed and experienced.
“ Don’t think there’s much else Hasumi and I could really do at that point but... if nothin’ else, would you at least let us think of ya, while tryin’ to be considerate of your needs? Maybe there’s a compromise somewhere. ”

This conversation was heading towards the wrong direction; Rei had intended to give both Keito and Kuro an answer that he’d thought would be satisfactory enough for them to stop pestering him about his own need for fresh blood. However, he had to answer each question as truthfully as possible, and it was slowly backing him up to a corner.
Rei’s a vampire; blood is his life, no matter how hard he’d try to avoid it.
“I have said that it would depend on how active I’ll become in the following days. ‘A week’ would be the worst case—” Keito’s indignant frown was a clear sign that he wasn’t buying the excuse. “And are you telling us that you’re going to wait until that week passes before you’d act upon it?” “No—” “What if this happens again?!” “I-I assure you that’s—” “You’ve lost control once; who’s to tell that it won’t happen again?!” “‘Once’ is happenstance!” “And do you intend to see if 'twice’ is a coincidence?!” “You speak as though it would surely happen…!” “Can you blame me for thinking such? Sakuma, need I remind you that I’m the dormitory supervisor? Everyone’s welfare, as well as their safety, is my responsibility!”
Aside from Keito, Kuro didn’t seem to take the information well either, his look of discomfort wasn’t missed. Rei sighed, trying hard not to think of what could possibly be the inevitable for him. “As you might already have deduced, Kiryu-kun; yes, blood…is akin to nutritious food for my kind. The fresher, the better…And, unfortunately, while the blood of animals would suffice as a substitute, the blood of humans…is the more potent of the two.” He couldn’t believe he’s saying all of these. “My family is amply supplied with it—human blood, that is—but…”
Rei’s throat felt dry, his expression wrinkling into obvious discomfort, accompanied with a whine of protest.
“I’d…rather not…If I can help it.” “Which you can’t.” “Hasumi-kun, please.”
" Guys, we’re just goin’ in circles at this rate. ” Finding an opportunity to interject between their increasingly tense, rapid-fire exchange, Kuro finally snaps in frustration at Rei’s avoidance of the subject, making it clear he’s on Keito’s side of the argument and doesn’t miss a beat in continuing where his unitmate, who’s clearly at wit’s end, left off.
“ And why can’t you, Sakuma? That’s what I’m wonderin’ here. Everythin’ else? Fine, I can accept that, but this is what’s stumpin’ me. I can only make assumptions, but that ain’t fair to you, so explain yourself already, will ya? ” He crosses his arms with a stern look on his face, indicating that he isn’t about to back down from this line of questioning, but he is conscious of his approach and tries to appeal to Rei in the process so that he doesn’t close himself off completely.
“ We ain’t doin’ this 'cause we’re out to get ya, y’know. Yeah, we’re concerned about other people’s safety... but your well-being is somethin’ that’s bein’ taken into consideration too. I don’t think Hasumi would be gettin’ on your case like this if he didn’t care, ‘specially after all these years. ” His eyes briefly wander over to Keito whenever he’s mentioned, as if silently looking for his affirmation before he continues.
“ ...It ain’t like we can’t tell it’s weighin’ on ya either, so that’s why we wanna understand what’s goin’ on in your head too. I may not be able to see ya the same way ever again... but I don’t want that to mean I’m just gonna be suspicious of ya for the rest of my life. ”

“That is actually a good…If not the best approach to the situation.” Rei mused, remarking that Kuro maintaining his usual dismissive attitude towards Rei’s ‘vampire shtick’ would make things easier for them. Although, the reality of knowing the truth now loomed over them; would there be slip-ups through the charade in the future…? On the other hand. Kuro probably wouldn’t make that mistake on purpose…?
Now that Rei had thought about it, Kuro wasn’t as dull as a dumb muscle as Keito would call him. Just as Rei had hoped that Kuro wouldn’t know much about vampire lore, no matter the source material, the redhead had proved that he can be rather observant at unexpected times. Rei wasn’t at all pleased with the idea of having someone try and meddle with his personal problems. Those were problems he was meant to deal with alone.
—
Rei was probably thinking about how his 'backstory’ never mattered again, otherwise, he wouldn’t have insisted on just using the 'Dracula’ novel to satisfy Kuro’s inquiries. Keito wasn’t at all pleased with a flimsy excuse like that; just how low did Rei value himself, really?
Thankfully, Kuro was quick to catch onto vampire lore; Keito was certain that, armed with that knowledge, Rei would have less room to worm himself out of the situation.
Now, they’ll just need to corner the vampire so they can then come up with a solution.
—
“Well…” Rei shuffled uncomfortably in his seat; the urge to escape very high. But, he’d made a promise, and he needed to keep it. “That would…depend on how active I’ll become in the coming days. It could last me a month…” Rei paused to grimace, and then said in the barest of whispers possible, “or a week.”
Unfortunately, Keito, who had super-sharp hearing, was right beside him.
“A week?! That won’t do, Sakuma!” “Oh, hello, Hasumi-kun. I forgot that you’re right there.” “Oh, really? Then, let me get a knife; I’ll carve my existence into your very soul so you won’t forget about me next time!”
Even if he couldn’t hear Rei’s aside, Keito’s response is all Kuro needed to hear to understand that, no, not even his blood donation would be enough to last him past another week, or a month, seemingly at best. Not even Kuro could hold back an exasperated sigh at that knowledge, sharply exhaling as he ran a hand through his hair while thinking about just how much blood Rei needed to maintain an ideal quality of life... and the thought of it admittedly made him feel a bit sick.
“ ...In other words, you need to consistently drink blood. So how’ve you been gettin’ your blood until now...? You’ve probably been drinkin’ blood your entire life, but do you only drink from humans, or do you drink from animals too? ” Part of him wasn’t sure if he wanted to know the answers to those questions, but their conversation would’ve inevitably led to it at one point or another, and he’d be lying if he said he wasn’t at least a little curious... He’s already had his entire worldview shattered by one revelation after another - what more could he lose at this point besides a few more nights of sleep, or a few more pints of blood?

“Ah, that it is…” Rei’s voice trailed in response to Kuro, his head bowing in apology as, indeed, Kuro would have to keep the vampire’s identity a secret from now on. It’s a burden he’d unintentionally placed unto an innocent bystander’s shoulders. “Indeed it is not; it will…certainly test one’s acting skills to the fullest.” Rei shrugged his shoulders, grinning weakly as he quipped, “At the very least, you can consider it as practice for a performance role~ Kukuk—Ow…” Keito, grumpy, grouchy, and completely unamused by the weak joke, had punched Rei on the arm in retaliation.
Rei couldn’t have broken the serious atmosphere with a joke anyway as Kuro then posed a very important, observant question, one that made Rei visibly twitch and tense up on his seat.
“Yes, that is as you say…” Rei really didn’t want to answer the sensitive question, and it’s obvious with how his gaze was moving from side to side, avoiding Kuro’s. And yet, the ‘different circumstances’ implied seemed to pierce his soul.
Rei knew the danger. He’d thought that he could suppress his own need. But, that rare blue moon last Halloween had certainly thrown a wrench at Rei’s self-control.
Could he really trust himself after this?
“I’ve already had a proper dose; it’ll suffice.”
The reprimanding, doubtful look Keito gave Rei after that spoke volumes: No, it won’t.
“ Nah, it’ll be more like nothin’ changed. I just have to keep callin’ bullshit on your ‘vampire’ shtick like I always have. ” He knows it’s inappropriate at a time like this, but Kuro took the joke slightly better than Keito did, able to laugh it off with a half-hearted chuckle and a snarky remark of his own. He’s just as quick to shut up however, as they’re brought back to the matter at hand.
He knows this line of questioning is delving deep into Rei’s personal matters, making him visibly uncomfortable, but he doesn’t stop there and continues to press him, spurned by Keito’s doubtful look in response to Rei’s claim that everything would be settled now that he had gotten his fill of blood...
“ ...For how long, Sakuma? This sort of thing is like a natural instinct, ain’t it? Like how humans need water to live and they’ll get thirsty when they don’t drink for too long. ” His expression is completely serious while discussing something he never would’ve imagined to have a legitimate conversation about, let alone with a real vampire at that. Having had the time to let it process, now he needed answers to his questions, not satisfied until he’s heard everything he needed to hear.
“ Obviously I’m no expert on this, so I’m just goin’ off of what Hasumi’s told me and well, fiction. And there’s only so much that can get me in knowin’ the truth, so you gotta be honest with us, Sakuma. We ain’t ever gonna find closure otherwise. ”

And once again, Keito was rejected, and subsequently ignored by Rei. Indignant, Keito glared at the back of Rei’s head, clicking his tongue in protest to the silent treatment he’s now receiving. Just what was with his blood that Rei would continuously refuse to take it?
Unfortunately, Rei was answering Kuro’s questions, which felt like a trade-off for Keito to hold his tongue.
Damn that vampire; circumstances seem to favor Rei over Keito once again.
The hard, displeased look on Keito’s face promised that the topic was far from closed. And Rei could feel it pressing against his back.
—–
Rei sighed when Kuro appeared to have figured out the so-called mystery, now looking at Kuro’s face, trying to read his current thoughts. The vampire was about to resign himself to being cursed, to be called out as the monster that he is…
However, the expected storm never came, Rei looking up to see Kuro in a contemplative mood instead, meditative even, and it confused him. “You seem to be taking this well.” he noted, almost awed, considering that he’d sensed some hostile feelings just moments ago.
Of course; Rei wasn’t completely off the hook yet, even if Kuro didn’t blame him completely for the incident. “Uumuu…? By ‘we’…you mean…?” he couldn’t help but ask. What could Kuro mean by it?
The tension between the childhood friends didn’t go unnoticed by Kuro, but he wasn’t in any position to pry, at least not at the moment. Chances are he’d get the chance to learn all about it from Keito himself and he’d leave it at that. However, Kuro couldn’t help but smile wryly and scoff at Rei’s remark, shrugging it off with a dismissive wave of the hand.
“ Believe me when I say I’m tryin’ to keep it together, Sakuma... but I ain’t gonna act out of line and jump to conclusions like I used to, ‘specially if I don’t got the big picture. Unreasonably lashin’ out at people, harborin’ hatred and resentment towards ‘em... I’m through with those days. ”
His beatdown of Chiaki several years ago came to mind, a one-sided assault based entirely on a misunderstanding. While one could argue that Kuro’s resentment would be justified in this instance, it’s Rei’s remorse and him taking responsibility for his actions that allows Kuro to willingly have a civil conversation with him and, given time, forgive him. If nothing else, it speaks volumes to Rei’s character, and that’s something Kuro wished to acknowledge, even if silently.
“ Nah, I’m just thinkin’... ” He ponders the thought, before explaining himself, “ Now that I’m in the know, I guess I’m also responsible for keepin’ it a secret from other folks. I’ll admit, I feel like I’m startin’ to understand what you guys’ve been keeping up all these years. ” He briefly glances over at Keito, before continuing, “ ...Havin’ to lie to the people around you, it ain’t easy. And there’s always the risk of it comin’ to light, like it did just now. ”
“ ...But if it’s like Hasumi said, that you’ve been neglectin’ to drink blood... my only question is, why? Vampires need it to live, don’t they? And if this is the result of deprivin’ yourself of blood for so long then... ” His words trail off for a moment, the grimace on his face speaking for itself. “ ...I’d hate to think what could’ve happened, under different circumstances. ”

Things were slowly clicking together, and Keito paled when he’d realized that Rei’s hunger had finally gone past its limit just as Kuro had decided to check up on him. According to Kuro’s accounts, the tea party was supposed to lead to a proper lunch; it should’ve ended with Rei having a proper meal, just as Keito had told Kuro to do sometime prior, but that plan had been derailed badly.
This couldn’t have been all of Rei’s fault; Keito also had a hand in it by unintentionally sending Kuro to become Rei’s ‘lunch’.
Still, it was easy to point at Rei, seeing as it was his fault for starving himself to begin with. “This never should’ve happened if only you’d been taking blood regularly.” Keito huffed. What’s done was done, they couldn’t do anything about that now; that thought annoyed him. “I have my reasons…” Rei responded in his own defense. “And yet you ended up doing that anyway.” came Keito’s retort. “If you needed blood that badly, you can take mine—”
Rei chose to ignore Keito at that point, instead focusing on Kuro’s demands, which he deemed to be a less sensitive topic to discuss compared to answering Keito, deciding that if Kuro was destined to hate him afterwards, then so be it. It wouldn’t be the first time.
“Perhaps 'given authority’ was too strong a term,” Rei mused, eyebrows knotted into a frown as he recalled that point in his memory. “You’ve given me, a vampire, permission to feed on you, and, in my weakening state, that was all I needed to hear.
However, Kuro had pointed out something that made Rei visibly uncomfortable. He really went and did that, didn’t he; Rei could only make a grim look in response, dreading having to explain his other vampiric ability.
"I’m a vampire, Kiryu-kun; that’s to be expected…” he said, gaze averted to the side as he picked his words carefully. “Blood isn’t the only thing I can…take.”
“I’m certain that, with that clue, you can figure it out.”
Kuro listens in on the exchange between Keito and Rei without interjecting at first, but a look of surprise immediately crosses his face when he hears Keito nonchalantly offering his own blood to Rei, his mouth agape with a silent ‘ huh? ’ He isn’t able to question Keito about it however, as the conversation shifts between himself and Rei, who had the clear intention of changing the subject given how quickly he interrupted him and flat-out ignored him... He’d have to question Keito about it later.
“ But I didn’t- ” He tries to retort, but his hand hovers over his mouth when he thinks back and recalls that he really did say something along those lines, even if in an entirely different context... and he curses under his breath, letting strong language slip out of his mouth in his state of utter disbelief. “ You’ve gotta be fuckin’ kidding me... that’s all it took? ”
And as if that wasn’t enough, Rei only gives him a vague answer, but it’s enough for Kuro to realize what he meant by it, and what had actually happened. After all, even if vampires are commonly known to drink blood, vampirism can be attributed to a broader category of being able to drain life essence... in other words, the energy of living beings. Kuro’s face goes pale at the realization that, as soon as Rei grabbed ahold of him, he never stood a chance.
He isn’t outright furious at Rei for it, but it’s clear that he isn’t taking the revelation well as he lets out an exasperated sigh. However, he’s conscious of this and steadies his breathing, before he hides his face beneath tented fingers and speaks through gritted teeth, “ ...Well, that’s all I needed to know. Thanks for clearin’ it up. ” There’s a long, contemplative pause, before he looks up once again at Rei with a stern gaze.
“ ...Listen, I ain’t about to play the blame game ‘ere. I mean, really... I’m partially responsible for not catchin’ onto how you were actin’ and should’ve left ya be instead of imposin’ on ya. ” He then reclines back into his seat and looks up at the ceiling, reflecting upon his own actions that day. “ It was just bad timing, bein’ in the wrong place at the wrong time but you... no, we can’t let this happen ever again, Sakuma. ”

The urge to run away was very, very tempting; Rei hated to be in this kind of situation, avoiding confrontations as much as he could. In this case, however, he’d lost control of himself, and there was no way he could get out of it. It wasn’t the same as flirting with Keito, when he can simply joke his way out, or just fall silent whenever Keito asked him a very sensitive, personal question.
“I was afraid of that…” Rei’s voice continued to be hushed, the pressure coming from both sides of him not helping him calm down at all. He knew that he had to tell the truth, but where would it lead? Would Kuro hate him afterwards? Would Kuro shun him? The possible reactions were causing his mind to go off into thinking of several different futures, and all of them scared him.
—–
Thanks to Kuro’s accounts prior to the meeting, Keito have had his theories about what had transpired during that ill-fated tea party; now he wanted to hear Rei’s version of the story, hence why he was being attentive to the conversation.
If only Rei would just cooperate with them 100%, but alas, based on his past experiences with the vampire, they were already lucky enough to have him in the same room as them.
Why does Rei always have to make things more complicated than they should be?
—–
“Uumuu…” Kuro was being considerably patient, even with that hard glare on his face; Rei felt compelled to honor it in return. He sighed, shoulders sagging, all the while having his mind run through the memory gauntlet, amidst his fears, again. “Uuuu…It is as you say, Kiryu-kun; you’ve cordially extended an invitation for tea to one such as I, and I accepted. Seeing as it was a rare opportunity, it’d be a waste to refuse it.”
“Perhaps refusing the invitation would’ve been the better choice…” Rei whined, shaking his head as the scared part of him tried to stop him from speaking further, to stop him from revealing too much. “I…”
“I haven’t been in the best of…health in recent times, you see, and that incident…That incident apparently was the final straw for me.”
“Your blood…” Rei’s voice dropped to a whisper as he lowered his head into his hands. The fear as he continued to tread down the path of truth increased, the vampire feeling the weight pressing down on him with each step he took.
“You’ve given me authority over you…It was simply far too tempting, and I…I couldn’t resist any longer.”
“ Yeah, that didn’t go unnoticed either. Another reason why I figured I’d check up on ya. ” Kuro casually remarks in regards to Rei’s physical condition prior to their meeting. Indeed, it’s a stark contrast to his current state, now that he’s positively glowing, almost radiant with life despite the distressed look on his face. His blood sure must’ve worked wonders, ‘delicious’ as it was. He figured it had something to do with being in good health, as a physically fit young man with a large, strong build, which would make someone with a weaker constitution a less ideal source of blood... The thought disturbs him deeply for various reasons, but he doesn’t dwell on it for the time being and continues the interrogation.
" ...Now, hold on. What do you mean by me ‘givin’ authority’ to you? ” He snaps, clicking his tongue in displeasure. He’s likely misunderstanding, but with the way it played out, he felt he had been reduced to a helpless state by Rei, who had somehow managed to overpower him. Then he admitted to being unable to resist the temptation of Kuro’s nutrient-rich blood, almost like an animal driven by hunger, deprived of sustenance for far too long - that’s the best way Kuro could put it in a way that made sense to him, before he proceeds to drive the next stake into Rei, once again unwittingly touching upon a subject that’d hit far too close to the truth for the vampire.
“ I don’t recall ever willingly offerin’ myself to ya. You know damn well I ain’t just gonna keel over if I sense I’m in danger but you pulled off somethin’ that few people ever could - you had the advantage over me the entire time. And here’s the thing, I could’ve fought back more... but I couldn’t, ‘cause I felt completely drained all of a sudden. That ain’t normal. That’s the sorta exhaustion you feel after a long day’s work, not in the blink of an eye. No abnormalities were detected durin’ the check-up either, so I’m legitimately stumped ‘ere. ”
“ You got anythin’ to say ‘bout that, Sakuma? ”

There was no way for Rei to convince Keito to just use ’Dracula’ as his backstory. Honestly, it would’ve been much, much easier that way, but Keito had been so adamant on the vampire making amends with his unintentional victim that Keito had resorted to appealing to Rei’s guilt.
Keito really didn’t have to\ go that far, as Rei knew, was painfully aware of the weight of his actions. It was because of that that Rei ultimately let himself be dragged to Kuro’s dorm room.
Would this be it? Would the vampire finally be exposed for the monster he truly is?
There had been some close calls from other people during the course of Kuro’s recovery; Rei and Keito had to do whatever within their abilities to deflect and escape suspicion, and to cover up as much of the truth away from the public as possible. Rei could only hope that this inevitable conversation would end up well.
—–
Keito had picked the far end of the couch, opposite Kuro, leaving Rei to occupy the empty space, flanked by the two members of [Akatsuki]. However, Rei ended up sitting too close to Kuro, and, with his heightened senses, he could smell that healthy bouquet of Kuro’s blood again. With a distressed whine, Rei immediately shuffled away from him, but could only get so far due to Keito (who’d thought that he was trying to escape) pushing him forward.
Kuro’s gaze being fixed on Rei, trying to establish eye contact between them, wasn’t helping the vampire’s case any. On the other hand, Kuro would be seeing that his blood had been put to good use, as Rei would look healthier, and much better than he did in the past.
—” what the hell happened that day? “
“I…” Rei’s voice was barely audible as he struggled under the weight of two pairs of eyes on him. “I don’t know…I…I can’t remember…” “What?!” Keito was indignant at Rei’s answer, so much that he nearly stood up from his seat. “Sakuma—” “Wait, I’m not done…!” Rei whined, all the while running his memories from that ill-fated tea party. “I do remember what had transpired, but the rest of them…I can only recall parts! And barely!” The frown Keito made was indescribable; what was Rei trying to say? That he’d just blanked out, and completely lost it?
Incorrigible.
Somehow, Kuro expected this sort of answer - or lack thereof, from Rei. Much as he disliked having to recall the memory of the attack, what he can say is that Rei’s behavior was so unnatural throughout the entire ordeal, it was like he was a different person entirely... but he’s still not satisfied, expressing his frustration through a silent glare directed at his co-worker. Though his reaction is more subdued than Keito’s, he’s in just as much disbelief and shakes his head, letting out a sigh as he crosses his arms.
“ You’re gonna have to be a li’l more specific than that. ” He demands, intentionally putting pressure onto the vampire so that they can properly face what happened. While Rei’s confusion seemed genuine, Kuro’s at least aware that there’s likely more that’s holding Rei back, and continues to press him for more information. If this has to turn into a full-blown interrogation, then so be it. Given the circumstances, he won’t go too far, but he’s not above a more direct approach in handling this sort of situation.
“ Start from the very beginnin’, when I invited ya over for tea. Tell us everything and anything you remember, even if it ain’t nothin’ more than a vague recollection or insignificant li’l detail. If we gotta piece things together, then we’ll sort it out but if you don’t talk, we ain’t gettin’ anywhere. I’m listenin’, Sakuma. I’m tryin’ my best to withhold judgment ‘til I hear everything from ya. ”

“ Kuro-kun, you need to stay in bed longer. I know you want to go outside and play, but you haven’t fully recovered, you know? Fufu, I’m sure you’ll get well in no time, so just be patient… In the meantime, why don’t you practice your sewing? You’ve been steadily improving, Shu-kun and I are very happy to see your progress… Oh, and speaking of Shu-kun, he wants to see you soon, so get well for his sake too, okay? ”
“ Yeah, I’ll do that, Kaachan…”
It’s been a while since he had a dream about his mother, but her face is still so clear to him, her voice carrying the same warmth he felt when she was still alive. To this day, there’s always an ache in his heart when he thinks of his mother as he has yet to truly make peace with himself, but he’s still able to recall those fond memories, even if only through a blissful, ephemeral dream…
He awakens from his slumber once again, this time feeling far more refreshed than before. That medicine sure worked wonders, didn’t it? He’s still fascinated by it, then remembers that Keito had left the rest for him to take whenever he woke up, so he turns his head to find the box… only to be greeted by a familiar, blonde doll sitting there, smiling at him.
He blinks, wondering if he’s seeing things. He blinks again, slowly getting out of the post-awakening grogginess. ...Nope, the doll’s still there. That’s odd, considering she should be elsewhere, across the sea, in an entirely separate continent almost ten thousand kilometers away-
“ So he finally awakens. ” This time, a familiar voice addresses him, belonging to none other than Icchan. He’s sitting by Kuro’s bedside, sewing away and doesn’t take his eyes away from his sewing until Kuro, completely taken by surprise by his childhood friend’s sudden appearance, asks him a question about just that.
“ Itsuki…? Wait, what’re you doin’ back in Japan? You weren’t supposed to be back until next week? ”
“ Due to unforeseen circumstances, there’s been a change of plans. ” Shu explains with an irritated tone, clearly not happy with the arrangement, but he doesn’t elaborate upon it any further, instead looking to Kuro. “ …but nevermind that, what of you? I heard that you were feeling unwell, hence why you’ve been asleep for the majority of the day. Are you feeling any better now? ”
“ Er, yeah. ” He can accept Shu’s explanation, since having to travel on short notice is nothing out of the ordinary in their industry, but there’s no way in hell he can even begin to explain what happened on his end to him, forcing him to be as vague as possible so as to not raise any suspicion. “ I kinda overdid it and ended up wearin’ myself out, so… ”
“ Unbelievable, you’re as helpless as ever, Kiryu. ” Letting out an exasperated sigh, Shu shakes his head, setting the needle and fabric aside momentarily to pour Kuro a glass of water from a pitcher. “ Here, you must be parched. Have you eaten anything for that matter? ”
“ Nothin’ but some herbal medicine Hasumi brought me. ” Kuro motions to the lunch box sitting on the table, piquing Shu’s curiosity once again.
“ Medicine? ”
“ Yeah, look. ” Opening the tin, Kuro holds one of the moss-colored cubes up for Shu to see, who raises a brow in intrigue.
“ …What a peculiar form it takes, but it has a clear handmade quality to it; it’s rather impressive actually. ” If only he knew.
“ Tell me about it, and this stuff’s pretty good, actually. Taste-wise, and effective at that. ” He then pops it into his mouth, this time taking it with a generous gulp of water, going so far as to chug the entire glass down at once. It’s as Shu said, he’s very thirsty, having neither eaten nor drank anything since the ill-fated tea party with Rei, and the growling of his stomach is enough to remind him of that.
“ But of course, that’s not nearly enough. ” Shu shakes his head, able to hear the growling of Kuro’s stomach from where he’s sitting and makes a displeased look. “ Ugh, what an unbearable sound. Here, shall I bring you lunch? ”
“ Nah, no need for that, I can get it myself. Just lemme get outta bed and freshen up before I head over to the cafeteria… ” This must’ve been the longest he’s been in bed in a while, so he’s very eager to get back onto his feet and move around. After a series of stretches, he rubs his neck… and his hand runs over the bandages that covered the bite marks Rei left on him.
He freezes in place, having forgotten for all but a moment that Keito had dressed his wounds, but not only that, that they were in plain sight for Shu to see. For someone as attentive to detail to Shu, there’s no way he wouldn’t have noticed it by now, and the realization raises concern, even if Shu hadn’t mentioned it yet.
“ …Kiryu? ” His roommate’s voice brings him back to his senses once again, as Kuro pretends to resume his stretches and lets out a yawn, keeping himself occupied by getting a change of clothes to take a shower.
“ Yeah? Somethin’ up, Itsuki? ” He responds nonchalantly as if nothing happened, leaving Shu confused and slightly irritated.
“ Not me, you! Don’t think I haven’t noticed those bandages on your neck! ”
Shit.
“ Right… I messed up and got into an accident while handlin’ equipment, but it’s no big deal, ain’t nothin’ more than a scratch. ”
“ Of all places, the neck? ”
“ Yeah? You’d be surprised where you can accidentally hurt yourself. I’m tellin’ ya, it was just a dumb mistake on my end, so there’s no need for ya to worry so much, alright? ”
Shu has a dubious look on his face, mouth twisted into a frown as he realizes he’s being brushed off; it just didn’t sit right with him and he huffs, “ It’s unlike you to be so careless, Kiryu. You really ought to care for yourself in the same manner you care for others. ”
“ I know, I know… Things’ve been stressful lately, alright? So don’t go getting’ on my case, ‘specially when you got your own things to worry about. ”
Realizing he’ll have to remove the bandages if he’s going to take a shower, he knows he’s going to have to cover the bite marks with something else, opting to pick out a turtleneck sweater for that purpose. It’s not his usual style, but it’ll do.
“ Am I not allowed to be concerned for the well-being of an old friend? ” Shu asks, indignant.
“ I didn’t say that, don’t go puttin’ words into my mouth… I know you mean well, but that part of you irritates me. ”
“ …I retract that statement then, I apologize. ” He lets out a defeated sigh while rubbing his temples, the weariness of travel and the stress of work weighing upon him as well.
“ It’s fine, I didn’t mean to snap at ya like that either… You’re tired, but busy too, ain’tcha? Speakin’ of, what’re you doin’ just hangin’ around? You got downtime or somethin’? ”
“ Something along those lines, yes. Well, I thought to have lunch at this time, but you woke up soon than expected. ”
“ Well, good timin’ then. ” Not really, but he’s trying to play it off. “ You wanna head down to the cafeteria together after I take a shower? I’ll be quick so I won’t take up too much of your time. ”
“ That’s fine. I wouldn’t mind. ”
“ Right then, I’ll be back. ”
---
Even under hot, running water, he doesn’t feel soothed in the slightest, especially when he thinks about how he could’ve been exposed by Shu right then and there. Thankfully Shu didn’t pry any further, but he didn’t seem entirely convinced either, making Kuro fear that he’d try to bring it up again and force him to deflect.
‘ You really are too much of a worrywart, y’know that, Icchan? Always have been, that part of you hasn’t changed at all… but really, don’t go pryin’ too much into things you shouldn’t, else you’ll end up way in over your head. ’
He can’t help but run his fingers over the scars left by the puncture wounds, feeling two small dots along his neck and wincing as he recalls the sensation of having been bitten, palm clamping down over the bite marks as if to hide them. With a grim look on his face, he sighs to himself.
‘ …Learned that one the hard way. ’

That was it. There wasn’t any confrontation (which Rei was glad for), but the inevitable talk was coming.
And soon enough, Kuro recovered.
While Rei was happy for that, he dreaded having to have that talk with Kuro, and have tried multiple times to escape.
To his chagrin, Keito’s not having any of it.
—–
“I…don’t think that I’m…that I’m ready for this, Hasumi-kun.” “Don’t give me that excuse, Sakuma; you owe Kiryu at least this much!” “Can you just go and tell him? For me?” “Oi, with how damn secretive you are with your personal life, I might as well just read the entirety of ’Dracula’ to him!” “I’m not actually opposed to thaaaaa—Ha-Hasumi-kuuuun? Don’t pull at my mouth…!”
—–
And thus there Rei and Keito were, in Kuro’s shared dorm room, except he was the only one there at the moment because Shu and Izumi were abroad, and Mao had taken temporary residence in Yumenosaki’s Student Council office for the past few days.
Rei cursed at how convenient things were going against him.
Well, it was only a matter of time. He had to steel himself for this conversation, but he knew it was necessary for them to be able to move on from the incident, let alone comfortably be in each other’s presence, especially as co-workers. Even if he made a relatively swift recovery thanks to the medicine given to him, he could still feel himself reeling from the aftermath, and tried to shake off any lingering, unconscious apprehension he might’ve felt at the prospect of seeing Rei again. There’s even a slight tremble in his hand, and he’s only made aware of it when he tries to sew to collect himself, making him scoff in self-derision.
‘ ...Goddamn it, get it together. You need to face this too, or you’re never going to know peace. ’ He tells himself, waiting in his dorm room for their arrival after he had invited them over. He had timed it so that he knew for certain that his roommates were out, allowing them the privacy to speak without interruption. Shu’s sudden return several days prior had thrown him for a loop, but he’d already left by this point, making it all the more convenient for him. The last thing he needed was people unintentionally sticking their nose in their business, which he realized Tetora came dangerously close to the day of the incident. He hated leaving Shu and Tetora in the dark, but this too, was necessary...
Finally, he hears the door open, revealing Keito with Rei in tow (literally, considering the vampire’s reluctance) as Kuro gives them a simple nod of acknowledgement, setting aside his materials so that he could give them his full attention. He directs them to sit at a couch at the center of the dorm room, situating himself on a sofa chair on the other side of the coffee table, before letting out a quiet, weary sigh.
“ Hasumi. ...Sakuma. Glad you guys came through, ‘cause we’re gonna have a nice, long talk about everythin’ that happened. ” He starts in an even tone, eyes traveling over to Rei and remaining fixed upon him until eye contact is established, going on to address him directly and getting straight to the point. “ ...but I mostly wanna hear it from you, Sakuma. No use hidin’ anything now that it’s out in the open between us, so I’m implorin’ ya... what the hell happened that day? ”

awesomeuchuu:
He couldn’t stop sobbing. It was awful, he felt like a little kid, defenseless and useless. He stared at Kuro’s retreating back as he slowly pulled himself to a sitting position, his entire body aching, and he hugged himself, curled up and hugged himself for dear life, shoulders shaking as he cried and cried, and all the while, he thought about Kanata. How dangerous this was, how there was no way he’d dare to spend time with the odd boy again. If he could cause things like this to happen…? But he needed to give him a talking to, that there were some things you simply didn’t do.
Eventually, he went to look for Kanata. Ran into Mikejima Madara instead, and they talked and talked… That cult had repaired the fountain? Had filled up the swimming pool? Had attacked Kuro’s friends? Chiaki got more and more convinced he shouldn’t see Shinkai Kanata again, shouldn’t talk to him.
It helped that he had to stay home from school a handful of days; his back was giving him some serious trouble, coupled with an asthma attack brought on by his stress.
Eventually he was back in school though, bruises still present all over his body, but slowly fading. He became, if possible, even more mousy than before. Keeping his head down in class, tried to avoid people as much as possible, ran errands for Ryuseitai’s members without question, anything to keep people from getting angry with him.
It was during one of those errands, when Chiaki had his hands full of yakisoba bread and melon bread and egg salad sandwiches - all paid from his own pocket, of course - that he ran into Kuro again. Literally ran straight into him, because he couldn’t really see where he was going.
“I’m sorry! I’m sorry, I…” He paled, took a couple of steps backward, panicked. “K-kiryu-kun…!”
With Chiaki’s absence from school, the days following that incident felt bleaker than ever before, reminding Kuro just how terrible of a state he’d been in prior to befriending Chiaki... not that he can call him a ‘friend’ anymore after what happened; he simply doesn’t deserve that privilege, especially when he sees just how badly he had affected him once he returned to school. He realizes he needs to apologize to him, but he’s trapped in a cycle of anger directed at everything around him... however, in the end, it all comes back to himself.
So he finds himself constantly lost in his thoughts, continuing to reflect upon that night as Chiaki’s pitiful sobs echoed in his mind repeatedly, almost making him physically reel in remorse for having done something so horrible to someone who’s probably one of the most upstanding students in the entire goddamn school. In that way, he’s no better than the other members of Ryuseitai taking advantage of Chiaki. That being said, he’s wanted to beat the shit out of them, or at the very least tell them off countless times for that, but he’s held himself back, making the effort to show some self-restraint...
...but that’s about to go completely out of the window once he’s interrupted by colliding into none other than the bespectacled not-quite-a-hero (yet) that’s been on his mind, part of the fault also on him for not paying attention to where he’s going. Seeing Chiaki’s pale, frightened visage is enough to make him freeze up, and any annoyance he might’ve felt were it anyone else dissipated at once. Filled with an overwhelming sense of shame, he’s unable to bring himself to say anything to him at first, so instead, he tries not to let any anger show in his expression, opting to pick up a wrapped yakisoba bread that had dropped onto the ground and place it back into Chiaki’s arms as the most peaceful gesture he can offer.
“ ...Careful when you’re carryin’ a bunch of shit, Morisawa. I’ll let this go, so just get goin’ to where you need to already- ” He pauses, realizing that the mountain of food Chiaki’s carrying isn’t for himself, and makes a disgruntled face before quietly muttering curses under his breath, just barely audible for Chiaki to pick up on.
“ Those fuckin’ assholes are at it again, huh... “

songofeveninglight:
“It is; it’s…one of a kind, to put things simply.” Keito nodded in agreement as he’d also gotten to sample the ‘Sakuma remedy’ earlier. Unfortunately, Rei had fed him the very first piece of the batch: the eldritch monster octopus Rei had hand-sculpted himself. The remedy itself was effective, but, for the sake of all that are holy and pure, Rei really needed to work on bettering his presentation!
Keito waited, watching as Kuro took the offered medicine, and when the latter showed no ill reaction to it, offered him another jelly cube as a follow up.
“I’m sorry, Kiryu; you deserve to know the truth now, and yet…” Keito shook his head; no use regretting what’s already happened. When asked where Rei was at the moment, Keito subconsciously glanced sideways towards the door, unintentionally giving Kuro the answer.
“You don’t have to force yourself to see Sakuma right now, Kiryu. Recovering your strength ought to be your utmost priority.” The next pause was solemn. “He knows what he’d done; he won’t run away from it.”
He accepts the second cube, admittedly impressed by the quality of the medicine and can’t help but wonder how it was prepared, what sort of ingredients went into it... but there are some things that are better left unknown, like how your colleague is an actual vampire. They say that ignorance is bliss, and maybe, just maybe, Kuro would’ve been content to remain ignorant... not that he’d be able to for any longer.
“ It’s alright, Danna. I’m sure it’ll come to light eventually. ” He notices Keito’s eyes shift towards the door upon being asked that question, and while he’s able to pick up on the answer from that relatively quickly, he refrains from commenting on it, opting to give a knowing nod instead and leaving it at that.
“ ...Yeah, I’m still reelin’ from everything, so I oughta sleep it off some more. I’ll be up and at ‘em before you know it. ” He still manages a little grin, trying to maintain his usual disposition despite his weakened state, but he responds in a similarly solemn manner once they discuss Rei’s accountability for the incident.
“ ...That’s all that matters in the end to me, really. The fact that he’s ownin’ up to it is enough. ...Not that I’m any less messed up by what happened, but it’s just gonna take a while to process. Once I hear the entire story from him, only then can it be settled. ” There’s no hostility in his tone, but he’s firm in his resolve to know the truth, having resigned himself to having his entire perspective of the world changed forever.
It’s a lot to process, and he feels it weigh upon him both mentally and physically, as his body begins to force him to rest after he’s strained himself to stay awake. He can feel himself drifting off, struggling to keep his eyes open as his eyelids feel heavier by the minute, before he finally lets out a big yawn, unable to fight it any longer.
“ Welp, guess that’s a sign I should just go back to sleep, seein’ as I can’t do much else. ...Thanks again, Hasumi. Sorry for all the trouble we’ve caused ya... wouldn’t be the first time, probably won’t be the last but... I’m grateful you’re still lookin’ out for us. ”
