New Zealand and England Tour Cancellation dents PCB

Pakistan Cricket was on the rise once again after not having several years of proper international cricket. They were finally going to have a packed home season with series against New Zealand and England. But on 17 September few moments before the toss New Zealand called of the tour during a security threat which hurt Pakistan Cricket a lot as they attempted to provide full proof security to New Zealand. The loss was of millions to the PCB for cancellation of these tours and also loss to the broadcasters. Chairman PCB Ramiz Raja was angry on the cancellation and he stated of recovering the financial loss and gain compensation from New Zealand for this tour cancellation. 

Few days later England also called of the tour and Chairman Ramiz Raja had stated that England’s withdrawal was disappointing but he expected that because the western bloc tends to unite in an attempt to back each other.

Ramiz Raja also stated that kiwis didn’t share any details of the kind of threats they were facing considering our security forces are quite hardened. He also stated that when we go to these countries they put us under strict quarantine rules and we pamper these sides when they come here. Ramiz Raja also said that he aims to have non stop cricket in Pakistan and states Pakistan to play good cricket because playing good cricket will build a strong case to convince these strong sides to come and tour Pakistan and Ramiz Raja said we will invite teams with respect to come and play in Pakistan. Pakistan’s good show in T20 World Cup has created an impact and England, Australia and New Zealand have agreed to tour Pakistan so it’s still a question if they will tour this time or not? Or they will sideline Pakistan again? time will tell.

Pakistan may face loss of millions as New Zealand calls off its 2021 series

New Zealand decided to move back without performing in the country due to which Pakistan faced heavy loss and it hurt the emotions of Pakistani fans. Before the cancellation of series New Zealand intelligence agency told the public that our cricket team is in danger as different agencies around the world has informed us. Due to which Pakistan provided the security to the New Zealand team and checked all the places in which there were doubt that team can get harm. But all the places were clear. Punjab cricket board chairman have asked them to stay and guaranteed them that they will not get any harm but they went back. Even after that New Zealand chairman told that Pakistan provided the best security to their teams. But the decision was made by the government of New Zealand. Imran khan himself talked to the New Zealand’s Prime Minister. The reason behind this propaganda was that India spread misinformation on their fake websites that the team will get harm in Pakistan with the help of America and other countries. America and Israel helped India to show that Pakistan security was very weak. Imran khan also talked to the foreign intelligence agencies but there were no response from them because all they wanted to defame Pakistan and its cricket community at International level. After Ramiz raja took the charge as PCB chairman Pakistan cricket started moving towards its rise and he said to the people that Pakistani fans will from now listen happy news regarding cricket but suddenly After the cancellation of New Zealand tour the fans of cricket community got hurt. But Ramiz Raja is trying to make better and better policies regarding the cricket community that will have positive impact in future on our cricket community.

Effect of Favoritism on Pakistan Cricket

The word favoritism means the practice of giving unfair preferential treatment to one person or group at the expense of another. The happening of this practice can be easily seen in our country as well as in our cricketing system. The sound of this word favoritism has been in our cricketing system science 90s. Since then we have always heard this word in our cricket system. As far as I remember I heard these accusations first time when Imran khan the captain of Pakistan cricket team at that time gave chance to his cousin Majid Khan and people accused him of favoritism.  Since then this thing has been in our system. I want to show you some examples of recent favoritism in our cricket which happened in last decade so you can understand better. The biggest victim of this favoritism in Pakistan Cricket is Fawad Alam. He has been Pakistan shining star in domestic test cricket for over a decade. But he has been given almost no chance in this decade. He debuted in 2009 for Pakistan in test cricket and scored a test hundred in that test. He was the only one at that time who has scored a hundred in his first test match away from home. Even after scoring hundred on test debut he remained out of Pakistan international team for a long period of time. After many years due to his consistent performance and media pressure he got selected but did not have a chance to be the part of playing elven. He remained siting on bench for most of his career. He did not get the chance of playing for Pakistan as he was not the favorite of the highest authority members of the board. He said in his interview “There are a lot of reasons. I cannot enlist them on screen but favoritism is there” His stats and record in domestic cricket shows that he has been definitely the part of playing eleven of Pakistan test team. Muhammad Asif has also been the biggest and the most controversial name of Pakistan cricket in the recent decade. He got out of the Pakistan team due to his involvement of sports fixing. Muhammad Amir was also involved in that. But when the ban period of both these players got over Amir was given a chance to pay for Pakistan again whereas the same chance was not given to Asif as he was not the favorite of the board. Asif was also not a yes sir person throughout his career that’s why most of the people in the high rank of board don’t like him. But this shows the two faced of our cricket board that they can make an exception for their favorite player too.    

After coming back to the domestic cricket Asif said in an interview “After participating in domestic cricket after my return I realized that there was a lot of favoritism and nepotism at play. Players were being picked based on who they knew rather than how good they were"

  These are only two major victim of favoritism which I have discussed but there is a whole list of people of became victim of this favoritism. The list include people like Junaid khan who was one the major bowler of Pakistan cricket in all three formats but due to his low approval rate in the high ranks he became the victim of favoritism even after his incredible performances for Pakistan. Yasir Arafat is also a part of this. This list keeps on going showing the dark said of our cricket board.

Lack of Communication within Pakistan Cricket Board

Lack of communication within the PCB has been an issue subconsciously acknowledged by almost everyone who is attached to the board in some form. There have been many instances when this has happened, be it banning of players without the players knowing it, be it the officials giving statements that contradict with the stance of players  or even PSL franchisee owners.

 An article titled “Lack of communication from PCB has HBL PSL franchises concerned” from July 2019, also highlights one such instance when the PCB had decided to remain silent both in terms of action and dialogue when the franchise owners of PSL wanted to discuss several things with the PCB management since the fourth edition of PSL.The issue of lack of communication was also evident when Misbah and Waqar Younis were the head coach and selector respectively.It was stated in an interview by Misbah ul Haq that the statements and decisions made by PCB were totally taken by themselves without their consent and without informing them, which caused resentment in both Waqar Younis and himself , since they both held senior as well as important positions in the board at that time.During President Zardari’s last era as ruler, Wajid Shamsul Hasan had a written a complaint to President Asif Ali Zardari for PCB not fulfilling its role of properly communicating ICC’s laws related to match-fixing.

 This has tarnished the board’s image time and again and has been an issue for the players as they are unable to continue a prolonged and healthy relationship with the management of the cricket board.

Pakistan Cricket fans left alone at the last moment.

It always hurt to get ditched at the last time. All the Pakistanis have gone through this pain in recent times when the New Zealand cricket team refused to play an international match in Pakistan all because of a fake email. Recently the New Zealand cricket team arrived in Pakistan to play white ball cricket which included three One Day Internationals followed by five T/20 Internationals. But the New Zealand team pulled themselves out at the last moment before the beginning of the first ODI match to be played in Rawalpindi cricket stadium.  The New Zealand management said that they cannot go ahead with this series because they received information from their government that security in Pakistan is not up to the mark. They claimed that they received this information from the intelligence services.  After this the whole Pakistan was in anger.

All Pakistanis showed their anger over this behavior of the New Zealand cricket team and their management.  They behaved like a child during this incident. They tried to pretend that they are innocent. Even the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran khan called the Prime Minister of New Zealand and assured them that the best level of security is given to their team in Pakistan. But they refused to continue the series. After this they tried their best to leave Pakistan as soon as possible. Later it was discovered that a player of the New Zealand cricket team received a fake email from India in which a death threat was given to his family. After hearing this all the meme community of Pakistan started making memes on the New Zealand cricket team and their player that they are even afraid of a fake email from some random person in the world. All Pakistanis used their humor and make very funny jokes and meme on this incident. Fans said that our team will clear the security issues of NZ team in the upcoming ICC T20 world cup.

Return of International Cricket Events to Pakistan

March 3rd 2009 was a tragic day in Pakistan’s cricket history, it was the day when attack on the Sri Lankan team had happened and international cricket was taken away from Pakistan and our fans were deprived of having international events in the country and having faced my younger days without being able to watch international cricket in home was tough. Hearing about the stories of international matches in Pakistan made me emotional at times because our generation missed that fun of watching international matches. The country was doomed after that incident and fans were dejected. Pakistan had faced big issues and they lost their image and they were forced to play in UAE which became their neutral venue. But cricket there was no-where near the standard of cricket you would get in Pakistan due to low attendance of crowd in the games. PCB faced losses playing in UAE due to high costs of ground and low attendance of crowd specially in the test matches. There was a loss of gate money and main damage which hurt Pakistan cricket and also what dented Pakistan cricket was specially players missing to play infront of their home crowds many of these players haven’t played an international game infront of home crowd. Something which the past Pakistani cricketers enjoyed a lot and they had enjoyed the home advantage and domination something which the other teams also tend to enjoy. Playing in home crowds gives you confidence and gives boost to the players to perform well.

Main game changer in this scenario has been the PSL as the PSL was one of the first steps to bring international cricket back in the country, before that we had a small tour by world xi in 2012 but that wasn’t of that big a magnitude and also a tour by Zimbabwe in 2015. Then PSL final had happened in Lahore in 2017 after the first edition in UAE and finally some sort of cricket had returned in Pakistan after quite a while. Then next edition was partially in Pakistan with knockout games being held here and in the same year in 2017 the World XI side had also toured Pakistan and that proved out to be a good series worth watching. Biggest success was PSL 2020 which happened entirely in Pakistan before being hit by COVID-19 and it was held in 4 different venues. Each venue saw big crowds coming in and gave massive financial boost to PCB which they missed before. Then moving on we also had Sri Lanka tour Pakistan which was a big boost considering what happened with them in 2009, it was a kind gesture by them to still come back and play cricket over here and Bangladesh also made a tour. Another big tour after that was South Africa coming to Pakistan because you can they were the first of the stronger teams to tour Pakistan and it was also expected that they will tour now because they came over with world XI teams in 2017. Pakistan got a hit back once again after that when England and New Zealand refused to tour and that proved to be the biggest problem the international cricket community of Pakistan faced recently, because fans were eagerly waiting to watch some quality cricket at home and their dream was about to become true but their hopes got crushed. The leader of the international cricket community in Pakistan, Mr Ramiz Raja was also vocal about the cancellations in his tweets and videos and urged Pakistan to become the best team in the world to prove a point.

But now England is coming again to Pakistan and Australia as well and there is also news of New Zealand coming again by end of 2022 and it has to be linked with the fact that Pakistan performed well in the World Cup and as Ramiz Raja said good performance does impact. Also another good news for Pakistan cricket after all the problems was of being given the opportunity to host the ICC Champions trophy 2025 at home and Asia Cup in 2023. Not only host the CT at home but also an opportunity to defend the title at home soil. An ICC event being held in Pakistan will be a massive boost even economically and also it will improve Pakistan’s image. Considering that Pakistan missed an opportunity to host an ICC event in 2011, they have managed to come a long way. We are hopeful that these series will be held successfully and Pakistan cricket will rise again. Because these tours will be really important for the future of Pakistan.

Pakistan cricket has managed to come a very long way and these tours will help the players to experience a home advantage and also will help the world to see Pakistan’s hospitality and passion for the game of cricket.

Australian team is coming to Pakistan next year for betterment of future International Cricket relations

cricket has now decided to come to Pakistan next year for matches. They have confirmed to play test matches next year in Pakistan. And England is also trying to build healthy relations with Pakistan. Pakistan Cricket Board chairman in a statement said that it would be happy to welcome Australian team to Pakistan. Australian cricket team executive has also confirmed that we will be coming to Pakistan to play test matches in Pakistan and the security of our team will be the responsibility of Australian team. Pakistan team has performed very well in T 20 world cup 2020 and reached to semi finals with highest record breaking players and performances if we take a look into past Pakistan international cricket team has faced a lot of challenges and got a lot of defamation. Obviously they were suffering from hard times performance were not meeting the expectations of the fans. Recently New Zealand team didn’t agree to come to Pakistan due to the security issues. But if we take a look in past Pakistan provide highest security to international players. The fact is if you are not that good nobody wants to play with you after the record breaking performance of Pakistani team under Babar Azam Captaincy in Pakistan. Pakistan team has made its name in whole world now every other team wants to play with them in order to polish their skills. The cancellation of tours from England and New Zealand has destroyed Pakistan cricket team and fans expectations. But Pakistani team worked hard to overcome the issue and most probably they will be successful in making relations with the international cricket teams in future. All these issues were started rising in Pakistan when Sri Lankan team bus was attacked in 2009 in Lahore. But later on Sri Lankan team came to Pakistan in 2019 for building better relations. Pros and cons exist in every part of the world. It is the right of the international cricket teams to agree or disagree to come to Pakistan. But in Past few years Pakistan cricket team has worked very well in making themselves best and Pakistani government has also took many steps in order to provide best security to the international cricket teams. Obviously when New Zealand rejected to come to Pakistan it has hurt the emotions of Pakistani team and local public but thanks to our cricket team instead of losing hope. They changed their emotions and feelings to power and showed the world that they are no less than any other team in world by successfully beating the strong teams like New Zealand, Bangladesh and India. Right now we can hope the bright future of our international cricket team. And this will have long term positive impact to our cricket community that will boost the motivation of our players.
