Final Artwork
Oil and Print on canvas
My four final mixed media paintings explore the symbolism of femininity. Using fragmented imagery of the female face that's painted with oils around the composition, surrounded by a mixture of lino and screen prints showcasing natural elements are both associated with the concept of femininity. After researching the history and ancient orgins of the flower crown, I was inspired to include aspects of this concept due to its historical association with power, eternity, grace, and strenght, which are all characteristics I want to express in painting the woman in my artwork.

Final Installation
I used a Canon camera to take the final photographs of my work. I wanted to ensure these images were of a high quality standard.

I added some final yellow flower prints and made sure there were no marks on the surrounding white areas.
I’m quite happy with the final installation of my work !

I used a spirit measure to make sure each canvas was straight on the wall.

I’ve started to print onto the walls. I am making sure that I’m taking my time and being mindful of the placement of each print.
I wanted to print the foliage patterns around each canvas and connecting them from each other. This is also to help the viewers eyes flow up and down from each canvas smoothly.
I’m also not sure about colours at this stage as I’m apprehensive that the walls might start to over-power and take away from the canvases.

Once I knew my allocated walls for the exhibition, I started to prepare them as soon as possible.
I started by giving them a fresh coat of white paint, whilst making sure to protect the floors below. Once this has dried, the next day I wanted to measure my walls and start to mark the view points on each board.
130cm - 150cm (145cm view point)
My vision for the installation of my work was to have each of the four canvases hung onto the wall at random points within the 130-150 cm viewpoint range. I decided this would work best as the canvases are also a random variety of measurements and as you walk past my area, the viewers eyes would flow up and down to each canvas.
The randomisation of measurements is to compliment the natural symbolism that will be printed around the wall, representing the foliage and flower patterns.

I’ve been heavily inspired by France-Lise Mcgurn to include surrounding imagery around the hanging canvases.
I practiced printing the Lino-cut outs of the floral patterns onto the wall in my studio space.
I think this could be successful but I need to get the volume and colour palette of the prints correct. I feel as though the practice display I have just created in these images is slightly too busy. I like how the surrounding pattern is a continuation of the prints of the canvases, but I also don’t want to take away from the final four canvases and have them appear lost within the background of Lino prints.

Four Final Works
Oil and Print on Canvas 19.5cm-23cm
Oil and Print on Canvas 21.5cm-40cm
Oil and Print on Canvas 42cm-38.5cm
Oil and Print on Canvas 37.5cm-48cm
Using the Canon camera again to photograph the finished mixed media prints, ensures me that I’m following a good professional practice and that the images I am using of my work are of a high quality standard.
I used UHU adhesive to stick down the collaged imagery. I chose this adhesive as I knew it would work well to stick down the paper, as well as drying clear.
I debated to use a finishing gloss over the top of all my work, however, after doing some research I decided that it would be best to leave this step out for the exhibition. This is because it is risky to use a gloss that would work over the top of printing ink, oil paints and paper without affecting the finish of any other these materials. For example, if I used a gloss that works well for oils, it might cause bleeding of the printing inks and/or change the quality of the photographer images.

Using a canon camera I’ve taken some photos of the finished oil painted sections.
I’m happy with the final painted sections and I feel confident in my application.
My next steps are to implement collaged flower crown arrangements onto parts of the compositions.

The paintings just require some finishing touches at this stage, such as eyebrow hairs, eye details and hair texture. Once these sections are complete the oil paintings will be finished.

From this point onwards, I’ve decided I work best at home to paint with oils.
My plan is to spend the next couple of weeks to finish the oil paintings and then I will be able to take them into collage and start to plan their installations.

Using the cut out images from the previous modules photoshoots, I decided to create new compositional arrangements. These will be used as the distorted female faces to represent the female gaze within the final compositions.

I finally took the last two canvases home and used the Lino cutouts to print the floral patterns around the white spaces and sides of the canvases.
I took a picture of the four canvases together to showcase how they worked as a collective piece.

These are the final outcomes from the screen printing session today.
The small canvas was simply a screen print of the curved shapes using blue ink.
The larger canvas is a combination of both the curved facial shapes and the exposed image of the facial cutouts using blue and pink ink. These were positioned in a way that the print would be spread out evenly over the space of the canvas.
It was actually quite difficult to get a good print on top of the canvas. I required help from another student to hold the canvas whilst I used the printing squeegee a couple of times to ensure the image was printed without missing sections.

In order to screen print onto the canvas, I asked Thomas in the woodwork shop to help me to use some wood to support the canvas within the middle of the frames.
He quickly produced these wooden supports that fit perfectly into the middle of the frames. This means that when printing there is a solid surface to support the screen, which will create a successful print.

This is the final outcome for the first larger canvas using Lino cut outs.
For the final two canvases I would like to use the screens to create prints.
