When I visited the Hilltop Drive-in, a staple of Pottstown, Pennsylvania since 1952, I fell in love with the place, with its vintage sign and cozy interior. The ice cream was from Nelson’s, with its charming Pennsylvania Dutch slogan NIx Besser, or None Better. Now I wish I had “besser” news. The restaurant’s owners, who took over about two years ago, announced today they are closing on Friday. They said they need to take a break, and “regret any inconvenience this may create for our loyal customers but most especially for our extraordinary employees.” I learned of this from a reader who kindly gave me a heads-up. The old sign, by the way, was removed in October – the owners cited years of neglect, in comments on Facebook – and replaced it with a new version. It still has the same midcentury design flair, along with a giant straw. A reader on Facebook joked if the new straw was biodegradable. Dad jokes aside, I hope Hilltop can be saved, just like another longtime business in Pottstown, The Very Best, which came back from the dead after almost four years. Scroll back on my feed to see those pics, and the inspiring story of how that restaurant was revived. #retrologist (at Hilltop Drive-In) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8-FliFFI09/?igshid=10hbm48pniseq
