GRAND!!!!
So today was grand, and i have a lot to tell you.
This past week was filled with drama, some tears and probably the most cursing i have ever done in my life! (which is not that much).
So after that crisis in my last post my coach gave me a new duo to do  with a new partner. we barely had time to memorize the whole piece  than came the Friday before grand (yesterday)
I woke up with a horrible sore throat and didn't even talk for most of the day with the fear that it would get worse and we wouldn't of been able to compete. I was in the worse mood possible by after school  What made it even worse was that my new partner didn't even stay after school so i didn't even get to practice with her! so we came today with only have actually practiced once  and never went through the whole thing once with out stopping.
now might be the point where you think "oh so she didnt get qualified for nationals!* but you would be wrong! And no this is not one of those 'underdogs win' thing either. The reason we were qualified was because there was 5 duos in total and the top 6 in every category goes to nationals, so we got qualified just by showing up! so yeah...
IM GOING TO NATIONALS!!!
Tumblr media
Now back to the story. in the first round i wasn't stumbling and i felt so proud of my self but then, my partner skipped 2 pages. i saved it with some improvisation but the piece was much shorter than it was supposed to. 2nd round she skipped even more and it made even less sense! 3rd it was a little better but she still skipped at least a page. 4th about the same amount. than for the final round she actually only skipped a few lines that were scattered around and was so proud of herself that she barely messed up.
We ended up getting 4th place, but just the fact that we didn't get last place(5th) was enough for us. I mean we are still going to nationals!

My soon to be duo partner went. I dont know exactly what happend but all i know is our speach coach made her along with some other kids take the lirr home instead of driving them home like he promised! My perspective duo parteners mam was so mad tha she made her daughter leave speech!!! now i have no duo partner and grand (the national qualifier) is in less than two weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Columbia!!! Pt.2
Well the first day of Columbia is done. whew! i feel like i did OK. i definitely could of did better but there were a lot of good kids so i really don't know. getting there was a mess though because we all had to fit in our coaches car. now David, our coach has a 6 passenger car and there were 8 of us. one of us had to sit on the had to sit on the hard middle seat and my friend daisy had to lay across three of my friends laps so David wouldn't get a ticket.  All over this was a good competition and i hope that I made it! I'll keep you posted!

Tomorrow is the day. its the biggest competition besides nationals. its the Columbia competition at Columbia university! its a national circuit  witch means the whole country is invited!!!! this year only 14 states are coming but that's still a lot. this is only my second year and i am really nervous. one of these days i'm going to video me preforming and post it here so you can see if you guys think i'm good.  but for now i will just keep you guys posted on how the competition is going. wish me luck, even though i ill need more luck on getting there because of all of the snow.
I'm going to lose.

Judge Rant
I am tired of Corrupted judges!!!!!!!
Anybody out there even those not in speech, can tell you that someone who can make you laugh, cry, and sit on the edge of your seat, all in less than ten minutes like my friend Jasmine, should win over a girl who coughed twice and forgot her intro! If it wasn't for that girl my friend would have gotten to the final round and might of final got her last qualification.
By now someone might be thinking, "what is Dramatist's problem! Maybe this girl deserved the half qual!" well guess what? That girl was already qualified!!!!!!!!!! She had told us in the hallway, and my friend was very mad.
Another situation:
my friend was a ringer, only in competition to increase the amount of quals given, and she did a reenactment of a funny you-tube video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYXq1eA28mc
and the mad part was that she tied in scores with my friend Natasha  WHO WAS TRYING TO WIN!!! the ringers piece was 2 minutes long! and a judge gave her a 1!!! *major face-palm*
If you want to judge in a speech competitions that's fine, but if you are going to judge on anything but the talent of the performer, don't understand how judging works, or you just don't care about speech, than DON'T JUDGE!!! we have enough problems trying not to mess up, but its even worse because we cant control how prejudiced a judge is. Its no fair that a judge give anyone but the deserving part the one for the room.

Overall Rules
1) Dress professionally: No bright colors, usually pantsuits or black skirts/pants with neutral blouse or shirt and black blazer. flats high heels or dress shoes. no flash jewelry
2) Introductions: in all categories (with Impromptu and exempt as exceptions) you are required to memorize intro.
3) No props: you cannot have any props while preforming and cannot adjust clothing/glasses/hat to signify changing characters or that will be qualified as a prop. tears are also considered a prop so no crying(now that is stupid but its the rules).
4) All peices can not be longer than 10 minutes and 30 seconds or the person cannot be ranked 1 in the room.
5) Time Signals: each student is allowed to ask for time signals before starting performance. time signals such as 3down(three fingers raised when 3 minutes to 10) 2down (two fingers raised when 2 minutes to ten), 1down(one finger raised when 1 minute to 10), fist at 10, and c for grace period( judge holds hand in c shape and closes it slowly as time goes from 10 to 10:30).
6)Never say sorry!!!: when messing up during performance saying sorry only further delays your performance. though this is not an official rule, its something that the judge will put on your critiques that you will read after the competition is over, and it wil not be a positive thing.

Impromptu:
In impromptu, you are given a topic  and a few minutes to get your thoughts together. and then its time to preform. in a way this is harder than Extempt, but this category is not offered at all tournaments and is treated like something just for fun and is not taken as seriously as other categories. plus you can use your own personal experiences, something you cant do in Extempt. I do not think there are any special rules in this one.

OO:
Original Oratory
In OO, you write your own speech before the competition, traditionally about a lesson you've learned or something you wanna get across. i also don't know too much about this category because i have never watched performances of this category but i do know that it is like Dec, because of the walks and the way its delivered.

Dec:
Declamation
In Dec, instead of given a piece from a book or play, you would be given a real speech that was preformed in public, or an oratory speech(another category) that was preformed previously. because it is a speech there is not as much acting involved so it is pretty easy but you do need to memorize.
Special rules include:
- Allowed to move feet but only when you walk(usually one would walk accross their given space at key times in their speech)

Extempt:
Extemporaneous
Extempt is the hardest Category. It's the hardest because in this category you are not given a speech by your coach, but instead, have to create your own speech. In exempt at random a current event is picked for you and you have 30 min to write and memorize a speech to preform. i do not know much about extempt because no one in our team ever goes in that category so i have not watched them, but i still managed to find one online. you will appreciate this video more when you realize that this girl wrote that whole thing in 30 minutes.

Duo:
Duo interpretation
In duo you get a piece like drama except you do it with someone. this requires a lot of choreographing and a lot of trust. It is the one of the hardest categories.
Special rules include:
-You and your partner cannot look each other in the face (usually when the characters would be looking at each other they both stand side by side looking at the audience)
-You and your partner cannot touch(this is where most of the choreography comes in, it would be staged so reactions and movements are simultaneous so one could lets say, smack the other with out touching or even facing each other.)
