Right place right time
Robert Capa
Tumblr media
Robert Capa is a hungarian born photographer that used a Leica. He used a Leica to capture the decisive moment a bullet hit and took down a Spanish civil war solder in 1936. Capa brought fame to the war photographer world. Renowned as the first true war photographer. The fact that he risked his life for his work speaks volumes. We stuck to what he was best as doing: capturing reality. He chose his battles. He dropped in and out of conflict.

Say what you see
Within Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum you’ll find a plethora of artefacts, sculptures and paintings.
Choose one.
Tumblr media
Take a photo on your phone.
Don’t look at the name of the artist or year it was made - in this instance, it doesn’t matter.
Sit with it for a while and consider what you see. What do you know you see? What do you assume you see?
I see a woman dressed in black. She appears to be aristocratic. Bougie. Sitting on fancy furniture. I assume she has been asked to appear in a painting and she has dressed for the occasion.
On the back of this paper, write down your observations, NOT your opinions. This is an exercise in looking.
The woman appears to be wearing a fancy fur coat. She is seated in a rich looking piece of furniture. There is a vase in the background that shares the same design as the kind of priceless ceramic vase.
What is the object made of?
It appears to be a regular paint canvas, as this is a painting.
How do you know?
It looks like it’s a regular canvas used for painting.
What does it depict?
A woman dressed in black, sitting on fancy furniture.
Are you making assumptions?
No, this is based on what I can see in the painting.
Deconstruct the elements of the piece. It might be helpful to imagine you are describing what you see to someone who can’t see.
I can tell this woman is aristocratic, or at least, painted as such by the way her hair is styled and the clothing she wears. It is a big black article of clothing, draped over her body. The ends and neckline and feathered. She is sitting in a posed manner on a piece of seated furniture that, by looking at it, has a very rich looking design. The vase in the background looks like one of those priceless ceramics.

Contextual - Portrait photographers
Martin Scholler
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Schollers Images are very close cropped with a simple composition. The colours are simple and even seem a little grey and desaturated but this shows the detail in the faces and images. They’re very professional and images don’t tend to show much about the sitter. Most of his images tend to be quite high key as well.
Yousuf Karsh
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Karsh has a similar approach to Scholler. His images are professional and bold but uses more dynamic poses and shows diversity. His images are strong low key images with dark shadows, less of a crop and highlights the sitter’s features. The images have more of a moody atmosphere but still do not really show personality of models.
Olivia Bee
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oliva Bee’s images have a grainy aesthetic where it shows interatation with the models. The colours tend to be more muted and pastel. She shows movement and has a lively vibe to her images

Task 1 - What do you see?
I see a man on the ground. It doesn’t seem like anyone is helping him or even acknowledging him. Everyone seems to be looking elsewhere. This image was taken outside of the United States Air Force Academy. He may have been rejected or a candidate.
Task 2 - What is happening in this image?
The American public look to be actively ignoring the man on the ground. Nobody is making eye contact with him, nobody is looking in his direction. The man on the ground notices the camera and seems to be looking at the photographer. It seems these are either recruits or existing Air Force students. Life moves on and waits for nobody.
Task 3 - Take a book from the Library. I have chosen “PARIS MAGNUM”
Task 4 - Task 1 and 2 questions in relation to this image.
I have chosen Henri Cartier-Bresson’s work: Six-Day Races at the Velodrome d’Hiver”
I see a man sitting in a lawn chair relaxing mere inches away from the Velodrome track. He appears to be sleeping. Other men are seen relaxing at the side of the track. Multiple people on bikes fly by from the side.
A race is currently happening in this image. This is signified by the bikes roaring by the man sleeping. This man may very well be a rider himself and he is relaxing. Other men can be seen relaxing at the sidelines. I believe it signifies that through the chaos and uncertainty of the velodrome, riders can still find peace to relax and rest.

Colour Grading and Psychology
Colour and psychology
In groups, discuss the following:
Does colour influence mood? Do they change the way you feel about something?
Colour influences mood, how an image is coloured changes how we feel. Oranges and yellows show happiness whereas darker colours such as dark blue, green perceive sorrow.
Give examples of certain colours and they are perceived to affect mood.
Red- anger, purple – loathing, Blue- sadness, green – fear, yellow - happiness
What do the theorists say about colour?
The theorists believe colours influence the mind. Colour psychology works on basis of personal experience, preference and upbringing.
What can you use in Photoshop to change the colour of an image, globally and locally?
Saturation, levels, curves and RGB channels.
Try to find example tutorials to share with the class.
