Journal 3’s references to Stan
Post-Weirdmageddon
Tumblr media
“I bristled at the idea of sharing my accomplishments with anyone. I shunned my brother for one dumb mistake, and I shunned Fiddleford for having the nerve to try to stop me from dooming the world.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I just couldn’t get over the idea of myself as the lone hero.. and it was Stanley who paid the price.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Trust shouldn’t be given unconditionally, but it should be given a chance to be earned. There is strength in having the humility to work with and sacrifice for others- a strength I now realize was in my brother all along.”
Tumblr media
"Stanley Pines was the man who saved the world, not me. I spent so long thinking he was a selfish jerk, and he turned out to be the most selfless man I've ever met in any dimension. If I'm totally honest, I must admit that he's a hero and I'm... a hero's brother. And I'm okay with that.
Thank goodness he is recovering his wonderfully twisted mind. And I vow to spend the rest of my days making things right between us... If only he gives me a chance."
Tumblr media
“When Stanley and I were kids, we would often read tales of the Sibling Brothers- about two boys who dedicated their lives to exploring mysteries together. With a new anomaly to investigate, I’ve been thinking about those tales more and more lately.”
Tumblr media
"Dipper is no longer my apprentice, and Fiddleford has a genuine career as an inventor ahead of him- so I think it's time for the Pines Twins to join forces again. At least, I hope so. I haven't discussed my idea with Stan yet. But if I know my brother, he will jump at the chance to find "money and babes.""
Tumblr media
"The path before us is clear. And it looks like this:"
Tumblr media
“I had suggested to Dipper that because of all the misfortune caused by them, we burn [the Journals] in the last campfire of the summer. Mabel, Soos & Stan all seemed very excited by this notion.”
Tumblr media
“You hold a record of one man’s folly and the kindness of a family that saved him from himself. It’s never too late to learn that growing old doesn’t have to mean growing up.”

i was asked another question on my strawpage that i felt needed a meta to properly explain my feelings, so i'm putting it here. i apologize if it gets rambly and isn't entirely coherent lol.
ford, to me, is selfish, blinded by his own obsession with global recognition, and morally questionable at times (moreso than stan) but not an outright bad person.
i think he's an overall good person with an extremely skewed worldview. he's def not bad compared to people like gideon, preston northwest, or even his own dad, but his motivations are morally ambiguous and he tends to put his own selfish obsession with global recognition, fame, and glory over the feelings and safety of those closest to him.
an argument could be made that much of his behavior can be attributed to trauma and his upbringing (his deformity, his relationship with filbrick, his social ineptitude, his fallout with stan, his violent physical & psychological abuse at the hands of bill, his experiences while dimension-hopping), though that by no means excuses it, nor is it justified. in fact, i think fans who aggressively defend ford's objectively toxic and selfish behavior with "he's been through a lot!! he's traumatized!" do his character arc a huge disservice.
ford wasnt just a scientist that was obsessed with answers for the sheer sake of knowledge and betterment of humanity—he specifically wanted to be PRAISED and officially recognized for his findings, he wanted to be added to history books, he wanted people to know HE was the one who made those discoveries, which is what makes his treatment of fiddleford during their partnership so abhorrent IMO.
he refused to destroy the portal (despite nearly losing his friend and lab partner to it) and likewise refused to simply burn/destroy his journals, both instances bc of his own stubborn pride, not bc of some noble desire to benefit mankind (or save someone ELSE, like in stan's case for restarting the portal).
whether intentional or not, he projected his own feelings and relationship with stan so harshly onto dipper that he was the indirect catalyst for their fallout in DAMVTF.
ford did more than simply offer dipper an apprentice position. he planted the seed in dipper's mind that mabel was suffocating and holding him back (despite barely knowing them or their unique relationship), because that's how he viewed stan.
he didnt just suspect that there may be potential fallout between them, he fully anticipated it, yet still thought he was doing dipper a favor by driving a wedge between them. he couldnt see past his own bitterness towards stan and ended up pressuring an impressionable 12-year-old to make a life-changing decision, one that also drove mabel right into bill's trap.
the lesson ford was meant to learn at the end of weirdmageddon was that he is NOT the selfless, noble hero he always envisioned himself as. he was a closed-off, arrogant loner who let his delusional perception of himself and who he wanted to be push everyone who mattered away and make it easy for bill to use him for his own evil purposes. ford was so stuck in this headspace that he needed a literal apocalypse and losing the one person who never stopped loving him unconditionally for him to finally pull his head out of his ass and change.
stan was the hero ford always imagined he was destined to be.
yet, despite ALL of this, there was a repressed part of him buried deeep, DEEEEP down that still held stan and their childhood close to his chest throughout his entire life. he wrote about stan in his journal constantly, he wrote that he missed him in college using their bro code (meaning he didnt want fidds to know about stan and he wrote it solely for himself), he saved a polaroid of stan in his journal and memorized his business phone number, and of course, he kept that childhood photo LITERALLY next to his heart throughout all his travels.
this is more headcanon-ish than actual canon, but i feel like ford felt angry at himself for never being able to fully leave stan behind, despite how much he "wanted" to, or how much he believed he SHOULD'VE wanted to. after all, stan was the one who sabatoged ford's future. he's the one who ruined everything between them, yet here ford was, still missing him and having second thoughts about shutting him out of his life, which only made him want to shut stan out even more.
his father and principal instilled in him that stan was a worthless fuck-up that only rode his coattails and held him back.
bill, his muse, the sun in his galaxy, tried to convince him to forget about stan and their past.
and ford tried.
but he couldn't.
even at his most resentful, even when he was fighting god-knows-what in multiple dimensions for THIRTY YEARS, he never let go of that photo. and i think that alone speaks volumes about his character.

i got this ask on my strawpage and was gonna type it up in my notes app and post it to twitter, but i really couldn't figure out a way to say it concisely, so i'm answering it here bc it's prob gonna be long lol.
do i think stancest is actually canon? simply put, no. despite how often i'm like "STANCEST IS CANON!!" i truly don't think that AH and the writers intended stan & ford's relationship to be seen through an incestuous lens.
their relationship is def the heart of the show, second only to dipper & mabel's own bond. they are the center of each other's worlds, their story & character arcs revolve almost entirely around each other, and their happy ending is literally the two of them sailing off into the sunset to spend "the rest of their days" together (ford says this almost word-for-word in journal 3).
but i still don't think all of that was meant to be taken romantically.
in my opinion, where things start to get a little weird is, surprisingly enough, ford's relationship with bill.
the rest is under a cut bc HOLY SHIT this got longer than i expected.
there's no denying that bill was written to deliberately parallel stan in a number of ways, from his mannerisms, to his conman status, to the fact that he calls ford the same name stan did when they were kids.
he's written in a very intentional way that makes him serve as both stan's parallel and his foil, especially in their respective relationships to ford (bill feeds into ford's ego and encourages him to aspire for greatness alone, stan has always been a direct obstacle & challenge to ford's ego, accidentally ruining his chances at WCT & encouraging him to live out their childhood dream together; bill valued infinite power over his own family and destroyed his dimension as a result, stan valued his family over everything, and saved ford and his dimension as a result).
normally, this wouldn't be that big of a deal to a stancest shipper like myself. but as the book of bill & the accompanying website all but confirmed in big, flashing neon lights, ford & bill have a romantic history and are exes.
having the two people closest to ford be compared to one another is one thing. having ford be drawn to bill because of how similar he is to the brother he secretly misses is one thing.
having ford be romantically involved with said character is what makes me raise an eyebrow lol.
again, do i think ford is literally a brocon who's got repressed sexual/romantic feelings for stan?
no.
i do, however, think he has unresolved Brother Issues that led him to subconsciously find comfort in a romantic partner that reminded him of stan (right down to bill calling him stan's nickname for him) in much the same way a person with "daddy issues" may seek out affection & intimacy from someone who reminds them of their father (or is just "fatherly" in general).
that much, i believe, was actually intentional. it's just too blatant to not be lol. it'd be a completely different story if either
bill & stan were nothing alike (untrue) or
ford & bill's relationship was strictly platonic and didn't have any romantic implications (also untrue)
i've said this before, but this isn't just a case of "oh, ford fell in love with someone who just coincidentally reminds him of his brother." bill's use of the nickname "sixer" during their first encounter was a deliberate attempt at appealing to a part of ford that was repressed, vulnerable, and aching, in order to get ford's guard down and make it easier for ford to trust him, and it worked.
billford is a ship that, to put it bluntly, would not exist without ford's buried feelings for stan, even disregarding shipping/incest/etc. ford's desire to be close to stan even platonically is what allowed bill to needle his way into ford's heart in the first place.
and all of this wouldn't be that weird if, again, bill hadn't continued to feed into ford's longing for stan even after they'd established a romantic relationship, by still calling him "sixer" and trying to permanently sever the relationship he had with stan specifically, once he and ford broke up (the phone call he tried to make while in ford's body that was described in tbob).
to put it another way, imagine if wendy was basically an older, taller mabel, or if any of mabel's crushes were eerily similar to dipper. people in the fandom would def take notice and view it as a little strange. so i don't get how people can look at ford dating someone so blatantly and intentionally similar to stan and think to themselves "ah yes, this is normal. ford is completely Normal and definitely doesn't have any underlying issues whatsoever" lmao
to conclude: no, i don't think ford & stan's relationship is actually canonically romantic, nor do i think ford falling in love with bill was incestuous, necessarily.
but i do think that he had a desperate longing to reconcile with stan buried DEEEEEEP down, and it manifested itself in the form of being attracted to bill, which is probably why he never bothered correcting bill's use of the nickname "sixer" since their very first meeting, or ever expressed that it made him uncomfortable.

despite alex's original plan for jimmy snakes (being "cursed, ghost rider style") my personal hc will always be that he is normal and completely detached from any supernatural weirdness and anomalies because i think it fits better with where i see him in stan's life (especially compared to ford).
BUT. the thought of stan flirting with a sexy cursed biker has so much potential for jealous, hypocritical ford.
the way i see it, ford can't stand anyone flirting with stan, but if it's a hot mermaid? a tall, spooky ghost biker? a spider babe? it's infinitely worse because in ford's eyes, those are things he can't compete with. ford has always been drawn to the strange and inhuman, even when it comes to romantic/sexual attraction, and he assumes stan must be just as fond of them, even though stan has only ever had eyes for his brother.
stan calls him out on his hypocrisy, considering his relationship history with bill, and ford just rolls his eyes with his arms folded like, "that's different! we were business partners first and foremost! and we were only intimate in my dreams, so it barely counts!" while desperately trying to convince stan that the handsome undead biker that keeps winking at him and ruffling his hair is more dangerous than whatever tf he had with bill.

Prompt 6: “Unlikely Lovers”
@5summersofstancest
Tumblr media
An unlikely encounter. Tonight, they are just two lonely men who happened to be in the right place at the right time. Set sometime when Ford is finishing up grad school and Stan is roaming the country.
Do you like erotic fan fiction? I have some recommendations:
“glory, glory, glory” - tentacledog
“He Said He Had A Story” - fishingboatblues
“What Happens in Jersey” - iamtheletter13, Myminator

My biggest tip for fanfic writers is this: if you get a character's mannerisms and speech pattern down, you can make them do pretty much whatever you want and it'll feel in character.
Logic: Characters, just like real people, are mallable. There is typically very little that's so truly, heinously out of character that you absolutely cannot make it work under any circumstance. In addition, most fans are also willing to accept characterization stretches if it makes the fic work. Yeah, we all know the villain and the hero wouldn't cuddle for warmth in canon. But if they did do that, how would they do it?
What counts is often not so much 'would the character do this?' and more 'if the character did do this, how would they do it?' If you get 'how' part right, your readers will probably be willing to buy the rest, because it will still feel like their favourite character. But if it doesn't feel like the character anymore, why are they even reading the fic?
Worry less about whether a character would do something, and more about how they'd sound while doing it.

Long overdue but another page of the Sweater Twins adventure is here!
This one I had to sit on for a bit (mainly because I was overthinking and nitpicking over some very minor things) but I said meh and continued anyway. But I hope it’s still good regardless.

headbutt around and find out, idiot
In my headcanon, Ford just represses his (feral) attraction and (obsessive) feelings for Stan until something minor happens that just makes him snap and act on impulse.

thinking about ford writing "stanley could have made her laugh" in regards to the woman he failed at flirting with and my personal hc is that it's not even a true statement—ford just thinks that highly of stan when it comes to charisma and social interaction.
stan has shown to be absolutely horrible with women, esp if he's attracted to them, and the one woman he seemed to have a lot of genuine chemistry with turned out to be a spider woman who was only receptive of his cheesy one-liners bc she wanted to eat him lmao.
but much in the same way that stan exaggerates the qualities he envies in ford (being the "heroic" and "useful" and "good" twin), ford probably views stan as the "socially competent ladies' man" compared to him, even though that's not really accurate.

Are you still there or have you moved away?
Back to the old house-The Smiths 🏚️
[image 1: exterior and then of the Pines Household followed by stan being thrown out of the pines household laying scared on the concrete. All scenes are at night.
image 2: A closeup of the twins’ childhood bedroom showing their hands in paint, Ford’s six fingered handprint is cast in shadow. The second panel shows Stanley’s hands holding Ford’s glasses and the journal after Ford disappeared into the portal. The last panel shows their hands reaching for each other as Ford is sucked into the portal.
Image 3: Exterior and then interior of the mystery shack when it was just Stanford’s home. Both are very green and sunny. Last panel shows Ford facing away standing in a dark green nebula, he is older with grey hair and wearing all black. End. ]

i harp on this specific detail so MUCH, i know. but there's gotta be a reason ford never once corrected bill or snapped at him or even made a sarcastic comment on bill calling him "sixer" tbh. even if you don't ship stancest or incest or anything problematic, there has to be a reason ford allowed a friend-slash-partner-slash-LOVER (emphasis on LOVER) primarily call him by the same pet name his estranged brother made up for him as kids.
comfort? yeah. familiarity? of course. subconsciously associating it with stan so it was easier to trust bill? sure.
but again, why let a lover call him that?
why have a situationship with someone that lovingly calls you "sixer", angrily calls you "sixer", likely lustfully calls you "sixer", and longingly calls you "sixer" after your breakup/divorce, when that's the name your own twin brother used to call you?
and ford never felt even the tiniest bit uncomfortable with it?
WHY NOT?
