The sun may see us in our brightest, most polished moments, but the moon witnesses our darkest truths, the parts of ourselves we keep hidden, and still, it holds us in its light.

Saturn is the supreme terrifier among the planets. All beings fear him, for he rules bereavements and misfortunes. If pleased he will give you a kingdom, but if irate he will snatch everything away from you in a moment. His grace makes you happy, while his wrath so thoroughly ruins you that your name is completely forgotten in the human world. Saturn determines longevity and death, for he is Lord of Time. The ambition ofkings is great, but their lives are fleeting. All the kings who have ever ruled the earth with their might have been reduced by Time to tales that others tell. Even King Indra and all the gods panic when Saturn is nearby, for over the ages many thousands of Indras have been overtaken by the power of Time […] Lord of the sinews and nerves, of the west, of Saturday, and of the constellations Capricorn and Aquarius, he is also known as the Slow, Son of Shadow, the Angular, the Black, the Endless, the End Causer, the All-Devouring, the Steady, the Controller, the Famished, and the Emaciated. […] If you hope to prevent Saturn from mangling your life, as he has mangled so many lives, make regular offerings of black sesame seeds, sesame oil, and sugar on Saturdays to an iron image of that planet; also, make Saturday donations of sesame and iron to the needy. I make my sincere obeisance to that Lord Saturn whose color is that of pure collyrium, who is the son of the Sun and Shadow, and who is the brother of Yama, the god of righteousness and death.

Cold Moon - December 14-15 2024
Tumblr media
Bundle up, witches! It’s time for the Cold Moon!
Cold Moon
The Cold Moon is the name given to the full moon which occurs in the month of December. This will be another month when the moon appears full for two nights in a row, so we’ll have a nice bright full moon in the sky for the 14th and the 15th, with peak illumination on Dec 15th at 4:02am EST.
Like most full moon names, the Cold Moon takes its’ moniker from an English translation of a traditional name used by one or more North American indigenous groups. There are a number of indigenous names that reference the wintry conditions when this moon occurs, including Snow Moon (Haida, Cherokee), Winter Moon (Tunica-Biloxi), Hoar Frost Moon (Cree), and Long Night Moon (Mohican). More evocative names include Frost Exploding Trees Moon (Cree) and Moon of the Popping Trees (Oglala), both of which refer to a phenomenon which occurs during extreme cold, when the sap inside a tree freezes and the expanding pressure causes portions of the bark or even entire limbs to “pop” with loud cracking sounds that can be heard for miles.
Other names for the December moon include Yule Moon (Norse origins), Oak Moon (Celtic origins), and Bitter Moon (Chinese origins).
What Does It Mean For Witches?
The year is winding down. It’s time to wrap up our projects and put aside what we haven’t finished or no longer need. Rather than berating ourselves for the things we didn’t finish or didn’t accomplish, this is a time to give ourselves some grace and celebrate our successes and triumphs and the things we DID accomplish.
With only one page left on the calendar, many of us are already looking ahead to the new year, making plans and setting goals. This is a good time to brainstorm and engage in a bit of broad-view planning. Sketch out the things you’d like to see or do or try in the new year. Give voice to your dreams and start thinking of ways to make them happen.
The Cold Moon also falls shortly before the winter solstice this year (Dec 21), which could be a boon for anyone looking to time their seasonal rituals in optimal fashion. A working could be begun on the full moon and built up to culminate on the solstice, or whichever post-moon December date has special meaning to you and your practice.
What Witchy Things Can We Do?
Have a small supper gathering with friends or family (holiday themed or not, it’s up to you) to share joys and fellowship and enjoy good food and drink. Make wishes together for the new year. (Wish jars can be done individually or as an informal group ritual. Sharing wishes anonymously can be a fun party game.) A “White Elephant” gift exchange or swap meet with inexpensive or homemade witchy goods for your circle could be fun too!
Make a wish jar for the new year and put it out to charge under the Cold Moon. Cleanse any of your tools or crystals or accoutrements that you use moonlight for one more time this year.
This is the perfect time for divinations and goalsetting for the coming year. Pull out your favorite divination tools and your new planner and sketch out the coming year. You can also try candle wax divination with holiday candles, if that’s something that interests you.
Also, save those seasonal bayberry candles for future use! They’re great for debt repayment and money-drawing spells.
If you need some ideas for a fun family activity, you can feed the birds for good luck, either with scattered birdseed or pinecone birdfeeders. String dried fruit slices, cinnamon sticks, pinecones, holly leaves and berries, and other seasonal faves to make garlands. Stick apples or oranges or clementines full of cloves in pretty patterns to make pomanders.
Use those fibre arts skills to create a special piece to keep your home warm and safe and well-supplied until spring. It doesn’t have to be anything big - a simple weaving or single square will do. Crochet or cut out snowflakes for your home decor. If you want to get fancy, pick up a ball of cotton warp thread and look for old doily patterns - they look great as hoop weavings hung on the wall (or make a witch web in winter colors).
Make one more batch of moonwater to carry you through to the new year. If it happens to snow or freeze where you live, you can save clean snow or icicles for special (non-drinkable) elemental water, which can be a fun base for moonwater as well.
And speaking of elements, make sure to remember in all your seasonal decorating that fire safety is paramount. Be careful with your candles, warmers, light strings, plugs, extension cords, and cables. DO NOT “daisy chain” your extension cords or power strips. Never leave candles or wax warmers or simmer pots unattended, and turn off your holiday lights before bedtime. Safety first, witches!
Thanks for joining me for this exploration of full moon magic. See you next year!
Happy Cold Moon, witches! 🌕🧊

Jupiter’s planetary qualities are grace, justice and high ideals. That’s why the stag is a representative animal for it, since it denotes royalty but also intelligence. It’s alchemical metal correspondent is tin and it rules over Sagittarius and Pisces.

I am the flames that crown the Sun.
I am the valleys and craters of Mercury.
I am the burning clouds of Venus.
I am the life that blooms on Earth.
I am the dust and darkness of the Moon.
I am the towering mountains of Mars.
I am the swirling storm on Jupiter.
i am the frozen rings of Saturn.
I am the floating mist of Neptune.
I am the diamond rain on Uranus.
I am the subterranean ocean of Pluto.
I am made of the same stardust as the planets and one day I will return to them.

A quick thing on people’s response to “I want to go into mortuary science”
So I was talking to an old highschool teacher tonight on Facebook, we just reconnected and she was there for me in a way that no one else was back then. We got to talking about what I wanted to do in life and when I said mortuary science her response was “are you sure about that?”. Obviously not too bad of a response, it’s sounded genuine and curious. I’ve heard much worse. However it got me to thinking, all the people with these sour opinions on mortuary work are going to die. They are absolutely going to die one day. Don’t they think of their family, don’t they want someone to guide them through the greiving process, someone to arrange their funeral and burial in just the way they wanted? Someone to repair their wounds if they died in a car crash, someone to reconstruct their beauty and outer health if they died of an illness- so their family will see the old them, the healthy them full of life, and not the one who died of a disease that overtook their body. Funeral workers and embalmers have such a tender, intimate, and important job and it feels like no one realizes that and everyone thinks that we’re all morbid, sick, and they have no idea why we’d subject ourselves to such a career. As a funeral director you get to spend the most intimate moments with a person who lost their life, a stranger. Every day. That’s beautiful beyond words to me and I don’t understand why people look down on it so much. We are the ones who will aid your heartbroken loved ones, we are the ones who will give you the funeral and burial you wished for, we are the ones who will tenderly dress your corpse, and recreate the visual health in your face with makeup and proper stitching. What we do is so, so important. It’s inevitable, you can’t escape dying. Those in the mortuary field have, to me, the most intimate, nessecary, and overlooked career there is. Please do not judge us, label us as sick, or as future killers or abusers. A love for death is nessecary for a fulfilling life, and if you have it in your heart to extend that to strangers, then you are a truly beautiful creature that deserves so much respect and admiration. We care. We are brave. We are the last people who will ever touch you, we are the people who fill your dying requests. Please show us that respect, do not name call or cowar, or tell us we’re going down a dark path. We go into these jobs because we care and we want what’s best for the dead.

Liminal Spaces in Witchcraft
Tumblr media
'A liminal space' refers to a place or time that is a period of transition between two phases. These are usually places where reality feels altered because you are neither here nor there.
The word "liminal" originates feom the Latin word, "limens", meaning threshold. These places often give off a sense of time standing still, a reality shift, or slipping in into a different dimension.
In magick and witchcraft these spaces are considered to be the boundary between our world and another, known as the 'In-Between'. These places are considered areas of great and powerful magick, since the veil is so thin there. As such, they are great spaces for divination, spirit work, ritual magick, hedge-riding or astral travel, and meditation. Liminal spaces are believed to be neutral/grey zones, undesignated and unclaimed, which makes them fantastic spots to make contact/work with entities like the Fae, elementals, the dead, spirits, djinn, demons and gods.
Examples of Liminal Spaces
• Crossroads
• Caves
• Rivers and creeks
• Shores and beaches
• Hallways, corridors, stairwells, landings
• Doorways and windows
• Graveyards, cemeteries, and burial mounds
• Fairs, festivals, and marketplaces
• Hedge rows
• Abandoned or empty places
• The edges of vallies, forests, and glades
• Swamps, bogs, and marshes
• During dawn/dusk, the afternoon and midnight
• Mirrors
