Can't stop thinking about Ellen in Nosferatu (2024) so I might as well write it down.

The thing about Ellen is she's a woman with one foot on each world, one in the human world and one in the supernatural world.

When she was young, her supernatural/psych side only brought her pain and anguish. She was isolated, othered, and treated as insane and perverse by the society she was in and even by her own father, the man who had most power over her and who was supposed to love and protect her. She's not all human, and people could recognise it, and never treated her as such, and she was very lonely.

That's the state she is in when she reaches out and awakens Orlok, initiating her relationship with him. For the first time in her life, her other side, the one that marked her different is bringing her joy. There's an entitiy that desires her and wants her and gives her pleasure. Of course she took her chance to able to explore it . However, their relationship is not one between equals. Orlok has all the power over her, because he can be inside her mind and he knows what he is, what he's capable of, and what are the rules he has to follow. Ellen doesn't know anything, she doesn't know herself or him. Orlok is able to possesse her, manipulate her, has the power to punish her if he's not pleased, but she can do nothing to defend herself or to hurt him in return.

And her supernatural relationship with Orlok takes a toll in her human body. She has seizures, her blood pressure spikes, she loses control of her body and her mind. And all the while, she's becoming sicker, more strange, more anguished, to the point where she risks being Othered completely, by being declared insane and sent to an asylum, definitively set apart from society.

That's when she breaks from Orlok, falls in love and marries Thomas, the one who can fullfil her human side and her human needs. He loves and adores her despiste her past illness and her strangeness, he wants to take care and provide for her. She gains a new footing in society, she has a friend who loves her, she's happy with her husband, as happy as she can be, while denying her other side.

When Orlok comes back, she has a new understanding of him. She knows him to be a brute who hurt her before and will do it again, she knows now that she can be loved without being inflicted pain, she knows he wants total submission from her, and she knows that giving in to him means leaving behind her human side completely. If she only wanted him and the death he promises (and she does want him) she would have gone with him on that first night, but she doesn't, even after he killed her only friend and her children and brought a plague to her city, she still doesn't give into her want for him, beacuse of her human love for Thomas.

It's only through Von Franz that Ellen is able to fully come into her own. He treats her kindly and tells her she's not sick or mad or corrupt. He shares with her the knowledge of the supernatural, not only of what Orlok is, but of her own true nature and the power that has over him. That's what allows her to sacrifice herself.

Because her life could only end in tragedy. She was born in a time and place where her two sides would never accepted, she would have to give into one and purge the other. But through her knowledge of herself, she's able to fullfil everything she ever wanted: she indulges into her desire for Orlok, her supernatural lover; she saves Thomas' life, her human beloved; and she finally has the power over the vampire, the power that was denied her through all their relationship, the power to take her revenge for all he abused her, the power to end his evil existence.

Her smile in the sunrise is one of triumph
