I made this presentation for school but it’s not a bad tutorial, so I figured I’d post it. I don’t have ALL the info in the slides since this is an oral communications presentation, so some things might seem a little abrupt just looking at the slides. I tried to add uncovered info in the captions, so click through the slideshow to see those. The text limit didn’t let me cover everything, though.
All art used in this presentation is mine.
I have to present this in 5 minutes or less or I get points off RIP me. Also, although this was drawn digitally, the tutorial is meant for a classroom full of students using pencils, so it really works with both traditional and digital media.

How to Draw Faces!
If you are still hella confused, please feel free to message me!
it’s perfectly fine if you don’t follow the rule, I usually use it very loosely, as my character’s faces tend to be more cartoonish and expressive!

Well…..here’s how I draw faces. Ish. So uuuuhh…let me know if it’s useful? If you have any questions? If you want more….??
And sorry about any typos and weird phrasing. Writing is not my thing. >____>

i’m gonna drop an art tip here
i think an important thing to learn, especially if you start out with drawing anime, is that faces don’t necessarily have to narrow from top to bottom
Tumblr media
i like to think of wide top, wide middle, wide bottom, and rectangle-like as the 4 main face shapes
what you should keep in mind about them:
you’re only halfway done: the jawlines, the width-length ratio, the amount of fat in the cheeks, the intensity or subtlety of the face’s curves are all important components you still have to decide on after choosing the shape itself
none of these shapes are exclusively feminine or masculine, don’t hesitate drawing them on any gender
most people in real life have some variation of the wide middle type
if you are trying to draw real people, getting the shape of their face down is the first step
i’ve seen tutorials say the shape of the face can tell a lot of the character’s personality - you don’t necessarily have to live by that rule. as long as you aren’t unrealistically drastic about their proportions, their face shape determines their inner qualities as much as it would in real life (not at all)

Hey!!! I’m a young trans teen living in an extremely sexual and and emotionally abusive house hold, here in about a month I’ll be moving in with my boyfriend down in Texas. I need your help until I can get a job down there, I’ll be taking commissions (or if you want you can donate to my kofi ;3;)
I need the help not just for me but for my boyfriend who is making this escape possible. He is literally my rock and idk what I’d do with out him. Until I could get this job I would really love to support my babe as much as he supports me.
It’d really mean a lot to me if you’d just reblog this!!!
I’ll do pretty much anything at this point,
I’ll take $30 for full body (lined, colored, and shaded) and $20 for full body sketch
(Everything is half for half body ;) )

Okay you said I could ask for art advice so here I am! 1) Usually, how do you "construct" a face? Like the guidelines & all... but mostly I struggle with "shaping" the face & the features. 2) Do you have any tips on drawing hair? I really can't draw it at all unless I have a very clear reference I do kinda okay when I'm drawing from reference, but from imagination I struggle a lot to shape the face and I just can't draw the hair at all...
Hi! Hope you don’t mind me making your ask public. I’ll try my best to be helpful, but my process is kinda a mess?
I always work with guidelines, especially for the face. Usually I get started with a circle for the shape of the head, then a cross for the eyes and the middle of the face (the cross is always curved, never straight lines), from there I build the shape of the jaw and chin, then the rest of the face. Here’s a quick gif :
Tumblr media
As you see it’s not very precise, and when drawing digitally, I flip the drawing and use the transform tool a lot. For me, the lines are more of a very rough starting point than actual guidelines for the face, BUT that’s because for a loooonnng time, I used more precised guidelines and followed them. I tried to do a sketch to show good construction lines but it was so messy… I recommend just googling “face construction guidelines” or something similar, there’s plenty of good examples. The two guidelines I always try to keep in mind are : the space between two eyes is one eye, and the ear is between the brow and the tip of the nose.
As for ‘shaping’ the face, i’m not sure what you mean by that? Do you mean the construction or making a unique face? If that’s it, I can share my process to try to avoid ‘same face syndrom’ and give each character I draw a specific look.
Basically, what I do is, I focus on their personalities and history to determine the kind of shape that will fit them the best. Depending on the character, I’ll go with a different shape and a different type of line. I might use long, smooth, curved strokes, or a lot of small, sharp lines. Once you have your construction lines done, you can play with the shape and feature until you have what you want.
Tumblr media
My advice to learn how to draw different feature is to use reference pictures. A good resource for that is @humanae. Even if you don’t wanna draw realism, it’ll help you with the anatomy, and you can work on adapting the face to your style.
TBH, for me, same face syndrom is a thing that I’ve never completely got rid off (I mean, just look at the examples above. I’m cringing at how alike they all still are). Once you have a more defined personal style, you’ll always have characters that look a bit like each other, and a type of face that’s easier to draw, but where’s the fun in always drawing the same thing?
Now for hair, my advice is the same as above : use reference. Build your mental hair library, so that at some point you won’t have to look at references to draw different type of hair. Something you can do too is : draw the hairline in your construction lines. This will give you somewhere to start from and might make it easier to draw a variety of hair styles! There’s different shapes of hairlines, just look at portraits and try to see them, then draw them!
Tumblr media
Also keep in mind that hair are 1) subject to gravity 2) light so they move with movement, wind etc. When drawing the hair, think about the setting of your drawing, the position of the character, and what other elements might influence the shape of the hair.
OK so I don’t think I’ve got anything else to add! I’m not very good at explaining my process and giving good advice, but I hope this was a bit helpful! Despite studying art at school for years, I’ve got a lot of bad habits from before then, and I’m generally lazy so I often work with the mindset of “fake it til you make it”. But the best advice to improve is always the same : practice, use references, draw from life, practice more!
Thanks for the ask, again i hope my reply was helpful! Have fun drawing!!
