All right folks, end of the year post!

We have officially made it through a whole calendar year for the Grinning Man Birthday Calendar! I want to thank everyone who’s participated!

What is the GMBC? Well, it’s just a fun thing for fans of The Grinning Man/The Man Who Laughs/L'Homme Qui Rit. I’ve gotten to know so many great people through TGM I just want to spread the love I’ve found through this community ❤

If you’d like to join, just send me an ask or a PM with the month and day of your birthday as well as the blog you’d like me to tag (preferably a blog you check fairly often). I’ll post a reminder a few days before the first birthday of each month. I’d hopefully like to just do a post that lists all the birthdays in that particular month, but for now, the master list of when everyone’s birthday is is linked in my pinned post. On the big day, I’ll either send an ask or, if you don’t have asks open, make a separate post and tag you in it. And you don’t have to follow me to join, but I do follow everyone who signs up.

This post is also a bit of a clean up/check in for the people who have already joined. If you would no longer like to be a part of the Grinning Man Birthday Calendar, just send me an ask or PM. being into tgm is so hard because I want everyone to watch it but I want no one to watch it. I have a select few people I want to watch it with but like it has to be a secret between us & other tgm fans none of the rest of y’all are allowed to watch it because i know y’all won’t act right

if the general tumblr populace knew about tgm i know exactly what kind of bad takes and shitty jokes would arise. i am plagued with visions of The Discourse. but blessed with the knowledge that it is not real

Ever since I watched TGM, I’ve been under the impression that Dea was born premature.

Ursus mentions “my wife and unborn child” in the puppet show, and shows no indication that he expected his wife to give birth soon—or that she was maybe even going into labor while they tried to get on the ship. Dea says her mother never made it to the ship and that she died in the snow.

So. We know she wasn’t close to her due date, and Ursus fully expected her to Still Be Pregnant And Not Have Given Birth when they were supposed to meet back on the ship.

Therefore I believe Dea was born prematurely, because it just makes sense. And I was born premature too so it’s partly just me projecting onto the story, but still. It’s possible that the stress of being lost and trying to get to the boat is what caused her to go into labor, or it just happened anyway regardless. But she died of hypothermia after having Dea, probably also compounded by complications during birth.

In a bit more meta sense, taking Audrey into account—with no disparagement intended whatsoever, nor to speculate on things that are not my business, as I have no clue if Audrey herself is a premie or not— it could also explain why Dea is so petite. Some people are just not very tall regardless of how they were born, but premies tend to be very small, depending on how early in term they were; for example, i was born at 25 weeks and I’m 4’9. It could just be that Dea has smaller stature for no reason other than regular genetics (and the height of her actor), but prematurity definitely effects how your body will grow and develop, and these ways are usually Very Short And Thin. Using myself as an example again, I was 12 inches long (baby footlong) and am now 4’9. Dea’s Baby Puppet is very small and looks to be about 12 inches long as well, and as an adult she’s about 4’10 or so. Same Length & (almost) Same Height Between Us.

idk I just think it’s very interesting. Regardless of if this reading was intentional, Dea possibly being a premie is an idea that means a lot to me and it just Makes Perfect Sense.
