“I’ll make sure to tell them. You should come visit them sometime soon. Anyway, you should look after yourself. Nightmares can be quite debilitating.”

He stopped himself before he could give her a list of way to prevent them. He knew it would do no good. She didn’t have access to the same supplies he did. Besides, commanders didn’t talk about their own nightmares. Silence was the burden of leadership.

“Oh, I never thought of that. I thought the sweater kept the heat in. I don’t know how else to keep them warm. I ca’t bring them indoors. They need water and they attack the soldiers if they’re indoors. Plus, the Top Dogfish with fight... The goal wasn’t to make them cuter, but to make them warmer. Winters are hard for most chimera.”

                    ❝ Aw, I miss them too!! Tell them that, okay? And I’m doing just fine, just hope I won’t have a nightmare again tonight and I’ll be all rested by tomorrow! ❞

     Just remembering the Whatevers’ cute noises made Nana feel warm inside, she wouldn’t mind some cuddles from those tiny little weird things right now. Eitherway, she paid attention to what the Commander was saying, tilting her head slightly  as he went on. Now that’s the type of question that really matters!

                   ❝ Um, that sounds like a good idea, although it wouldn’t help much besides making them look cuter. If they don’t have body heat then it means a sweater wouldn’t help much, since it’s not made to warm you, but to keep you warm. You get that? I support the idea though!! I’d love to see a whatever in a cute sweater! ❞

“You are one of my few friends. Yes, that counts all the Whatevers, who, by the way, miss you. Whatevers bond for life.”

As short as that life was, at least. The Commander didn’t give that away, though. Now was not the time for that talk. Today was for much sillier questions.

“It’s a shame I don’t have any healing PSI or I could help with that.” He did’t mind wasting it. he had more than enough. Being a machine and also dead gave him a near endless supply of psychic energy. “Well, it’s a bit odd. When I was bed bound, I was considering other chimera. I noticed many of them were cold blooded, particularly the dogfish. And, since they are always so cold during the winter... Would investing in dogfish sweaters be a good choice?”

This was just the type of thing Claus would think about, Commander or not.

         ❝ It’s okay, it’s okay. Don’t worry about it, just the fact that you use your rare free time to see me makes me happy! ❞

     She flashed a sincere smile, after all, it should be a sacrifice for him to do so. Or at least that’s what Nana imagined.

        ❝ Trouble sleeping? Um… ye, sort of, but who doesn’t once in a while. I’m okay though, it’s just the whole “sleeping on a rock” that is making me hurt here and there. An upgrade, huh? That sounds awesome… whatever it is!! But come on, you came all the way here, what do you wanna know? ❞

If one didn’t know him better, the Commander might have cracked a smile. Just a little one, but still a smile. It was rather funny to catch Nana out here. she looked a bit sore, though, and the Commander did not find that funny.

“Yes, it has been a while, I have been busy with work. Additionally, I had a small upgrade that kept me base bound for a few weeks. I apologize for not telling you, but it’s not like I can contact you normally.”

Casually, he slipped down to the ground and sat in front of her. “I originally came here to ask you a question, but you don’t seem well. Have you been having trouble sleeping?”

The chimera boy sighed. He guessed this wasn’t so bad. It was nice to see Fuel so happy. There was no way someone so kind could cause trouble, right? “Hopefully you don’t have to hide what you are doing from me.”

When the Commander fell silent Fuel felt his breath catch. Then, the Commander spoke. Fuel’s face lit up. This would be even more fun! “That would be awesome!! Thank you!”

“...” The chimera raised a brow that nobody could see. “Then I could sneak you in, I guess?”

“Because no one else can know I’m in there. For secret reasons!” Whatever Fuel’s cooking up, it’s probably not good.

“I’m pretty sure my people have custody of the area. Why not just send in a  formal request?” It doesn’t work like that for normal people, Commander.

“Okay, so I have a little problem. So I need to get into Osohe for secret reasons, and Duster’s not willing to break me in. Who wants to help?”

He couldn’t really understand why she was so concerned, nor could he completely understand that it was concerned. The Commander blinked at her in slight confusion. So, she was trying to stop him from going somewhere dangerous? Maybe it was his pride, but he couldn’t really think of anything being dangerous to him. He was the strongest person on the island, probably. Either him or Porky.

But this wasn’t his island, and he needed to understand. There were dangers in the world, maybe dangers that even he couldn’t defeat. He pouted in a childish sense of indigence. More than anything, he couldn’t resist orders, even from a strange girl like Viola.

“If that’s what you think, I’ll listen. But I could probably beat anything that attacked us, I’m very strong.” A little flap of his wings was the only sign of his pride.

His genuine perplexity to her sudden warning was to be excepted, the witch’s forest seemed like any other ordinary forest after all. However… there was a subtle yet fundamental element that set these woods apart from the rest. Magic. Magic breathed life into it the witch’s forest, inevitably seducing creatures of all sorts to come into the forest. While the witch of the forest no longer exists, remnants of her magic still remain within… therefore, someone or something dangerous had to exist beyond the witch’s house, no? 

“Ellen’s house… had used to be there. I believe that place was the source of all magic here. It’s gone now but… I’m really not sure what else could be back there,” she confesses to him, concern for his wellbeing shone brightly within her gaze. “But I do know that the beasts love to roam around that area. They may not have magic but they can harm you all the same… but still, it’s best to assume the worst, right? At the very least by staying here, you won’t have to worry about getting hurt.”

“Nothing that I know about.” Which was a lot given he rarely ate when nobody was around. that’s what batteries and vitamin supplements are for.

“Let’s go swimming!” -Claus

“Well, if you want to.” At least he could wait by the edge of the water. Claus tended to sink when he swam, and there was always the risk of his circuitry, which hadn’t been looked after for so long, to end up getting damaged an letting water in. But, still, he couldn’t let his brother down.

“Let me just get some towels first. Nobody will be happy if we return soaking wet.”

The Commander turned slightly to look at her, a rather confused look on his face.

“Why not? Is there something bad in this direction?”

“I’m glad you can see it now.” It would be a little uncomfortable if they were too similar. Hopefully that mix up wouldn’t happen again. It was awkward enough once. 

“Ah, I’d love to join you both. That would be nice.” Nice and uncomfortable, but he’d never say that.
