I learned a lot about essay writing in high school and now I barely use it in college, so I thought I would share some of the tips I learned with y’all
just as a disclaimer, these are the basics that I learned in high school. always make sure to talk with your teacher / professor if they have specific guidelines or requirements for an essay (especially if it’s an academic / scientific paper). also, please don’t forget to cite your sources !!
happy writing !!

DON’T SCROLL PAST THIS
for the last 2+ weeks, the Amazon has been catching fire. Yes, it’s the season where that’s normal but because of the sayings (aka incentive) of our new president, some farmers are taking advantage of that and intentionally setting the trees on fire. Yesterday, because of this, the sky of São Paulo looked like this. AT THREE IN THE AFTERNOON.
Hospitals of the northern states are filling up with people (especially children and seniors) claiming they can’t breathe properly. ALREADY ENDANGERED ANIMALS ARE DYING. THIS IS SERIOUS.
Germany and Norway, huge donators to the Amazon cause will stop sending money because they don’t see results (that can also be credited to our president, who has been tweeting angrily ever since - not because he cares about the environment, btw). That money gives this guy and his team equipment to save little guys like these:
THIS AFFECTS EVERYONE, NOT JUST BRAZILIANS. The Amazon is the largest rainforest in the world, and it’s being destroyed. WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING.
If your country is holding elections, vote for someone who cares about this. Don’t let another Bolsonaro or another Trump have the power to do something and then do nothing. This is going to shape our future — if we have one.
PLEASE REBLOG, EVERYONE NEEDS TO SEE THIS!!
side note: not to sound bitter or ungrateful but also like what’s up with Europe… y’all exploited South America for centuries but just because you “aren’t seeing results” you stop helping altogether?? if you really wanted to help you wouldn’t stop because you think you aren’t helping lol

BACK TO SCHOOL: HABITS TO DEVELOP
hi guys! i’m back with a masterpost of sorts, and a positive one since my posts haven’t been the most optimistic recently…
for some of us, back to school is right around the corner. for others (including me), we have a month left, and the realisation that school exists and we should probably start preparing is beginning to settle in.
start waking up earlier: wow, wow, wow. the most generic ‘tip’ ever to exist. but it’s true - if you keep waking up at 12pm, you’ve already lost most of your day and don’t have all that much time to do stuff. so, wake up earlier. i wake up naturally between 7 and 9am anyway (9am is a lie-in for me, thank you body clock *eyeroll*) so this isn’t a huge thing for me, but goddammit if you want any chance of not being an angry teenage monster when you have to go back to school, start waking up earlier a few weeks before summer ends.
follow your school routine: i saw this tip recently (i can’t remember who posted it, i’m so sorry! credit to you!) where you follow your school routine every morning, which can not only normalise it so you don’t associate that routine with school (that made no sense, i’m sorry - it just reduces the association with school, and when school comes around, you’ll hopefully associate it with summer break) but it gives you some kind of purpose in the morning so you don’t end up in bed all day with a jar of nutella for company…. i see you.
journal: this doesn’t have to be a perfect bullet journal like the ones you see all over tumblr, or a planner. i mean a journal, to write in and press flowers in if you wanted to, and just sit and feel like those girls who sit under a big window with books and a handwritten inky journal with no technology in sight that you see on tumblr in the lead-up to autumn. (phew, that was a long sentence). this grounds you, but KEEP IT PERSONAL! not school related! as a person who’s brain works on associations, it’s important to keep potentially stressful environments and aspects of my life completely separate from places of solace (in this case, the journal, where i go to write and say everything i need to).
have a ritual: yes, i’m a witch, so this could be a witchy ritual. but no, i’m talking about something you do weekly, whether it’s a friday night, a sunday or a mid-week pickup on a wednesday. this is an evening where you, for example, finish all your work by 8pm and then devote the rest of your evening to chilling. the fuck. out. put your books away and get your bag ready for the next day, and get up from your desk. draw a bath or take a shower. a long one. preferably a bath, so you can sit with bubbles and a book and chill out completely. then, make a cup of tea and sit in bed with a book or your journal, or an episode of your favourite netflix show. then go to sleep feeling really calm and at ease.
do your work as soon as you get it: every year - every term (okay sorry, semester. jeez, i’m a brit. anyway.) for that matter - we say to ourselves that the second we get homework or a project, we’ll do it immediately. do we end up doing that? no. should we? yes. set that same goal this year, and at least try to do it. okay but seriously, this is important if you want to keep up, all jokes aside.
check who you’re surrounding yourself with: are these people motivating? positive? do they lift you up, and keep you on the right path? or do they drag you down with their own woes that they drown you in, or do they belittle you, or make you feel like school is dumb and ruin the motivated mindset you had ten minutes ago? if so, leave. find new, better people who tick all the boxes. in school, you need a support base of people who help you academically, and listen to you - but remember, you need to be returning that. you need to listen to them when they need it, and help them in return.
eating breakfast: i suck at eating when i’m not at school - in the three weeks i’ve been on summer break, i don’t think i’ve eaten lunch once. but school reminds me to eat, and i come v close to dying if i don’t eat breakfast before school, but i know that suddenly eating in the morning after six or seven weeks of… not… can suck and can make you feel pretty shit, so start doing it a week or so before - if you haven’t noticed, these habits are all things to start before school, so they’re already habits by the time summer ends!
make a study group (chat): i’m kicking my social anxiety in the ass and i posted to my snapchat asking for people to message me if they’d be interested in being in a study groupchat on snapchat, which hopefully could turn into an actual study group when exams get closer. i’ve never done this before, but it seems promising so i highly recommend you try this as well! it doesn’t have to be a post-on-story-and-wait-for-applicants, it can just be your friends, and have that chat be strictly-study related, not just a groupchat. i had one like this last year, and we had strict rules that you weren’t allowed to talk about non-study stuff, since it was a group with my best friends and we had two other groupchats (i take things way too seriously lol)
okayyyy that’s all i have! feel free to reblog and add on any tips you think of (we gon need all the help we can get next year, studyblr gotta stick together yknow)

A thicc list of Tips for High School cuz I got you boos 🤠
The 2019-2020 school year has arrived :( Some if you may have already started school but I on the other hand start in September so I am watching everyone getting pulled into prison while awaiting my turn. Fun!!! Anyways this post is about high school tips since I know y’all need it (you might not but too bad,,)
• Do your fricking homework. Teachers may take questions from your homework and put in on tests. It’s good to start a habit of doing your homework everyday from gr. 9. Even if your teacher doesn’t check pls do it it’s going to give you at least a 10% benefit on your average.
• Join a few clubs. I don’t personally recommend being committed to 5 clubs for everyday of the week. You need time to finish assignments, do your homework, do other extra curricular outside of school, and treat yourself with breaks. I think joining two is the best and try to join a sports team if your comfortable.
• Also, don’t join clubs just because it looks good on your resume. High school is already hard and if you join a club that you aren’t committed to and don’t enjoy, you are going to have a terrible time.
• Try and talk to at least 1 person in each of your classes. Tbh, I don’t think you have to stress about making friends. They will come naturally but it is good to step out of your bubble and talk to people.
• Don’t overbuy school supplies. Wait for the first day of school and see what your teachers want you to use. I do recommend buying the bare necessities such as pens, pencils, loose-leaf paper, etc.
• During your breaks, don’t be a couch potato. When you get into higher grades, it will basically become a fight between your stamina and other people’s stamina. I’m not saying that you should build muscles like John Cena but be active for 30 minutes a day at least.
• Also, you should preview what you are going to learn for the next school year. There are resources such as textbooks in the library sometimes or you can buy textbooks from bookstores and get your money back by returning them when you are done using them. I also recommend buying workbooks. They only cost $15 but if that is too much for you then use online resources such as khan academy.
• start your assignments right after you get them. You don’t have to finish all of it in the first day. Spend 30 min a day to get it done instead of pulling an all-nighter to finish. The quality of your work will decrease if you try to finish is when your tired and don’t have much time.
• write outlines for your essays. Write down your topics, how you’re going to start the intro and conclusion, ideas for titles, etc.
• a lot of people say to become friendly with your teachers and a lot of people don’t like this idea lmao. You don’t have to go up to them and ask them about what they did on the weekend. Just say good morning or good afternoon while you see them walking in the halls. Don’t be a douch for god’s sake. You aren’t the only one to get stressed out. Also, they can be more lenient towards late assignments, unfinished homework, etc.
• when learning a new language at school don’t try to hate it so much. You can’t quit the class anyways so try to enjoy what you’re doing. Review words and grammar at least once a day and try to watch short cartoons in the language that you are trying to learn.
• I personally recommend writing notes before classes (unless the teacher does not teach from the textbook). While your classmates are trying to scribble down information your teacher is teaching, you can follow along with the teacher easily. If they give you information that is not in your textbook or you didn’t write down, you can write that down quickly, without missing anything.
• Don’t do drugs or drink alcohol. It’s not “cool” or “quirky” to do any of these things. It will just mess up your life. There are no benefits whatsoever. Also, if you do drugs or alcohol, don’t bully others into doing it. Mess up your own life, not others’. Always say no drugs kids.
• Don’t cram unless you really seriously have to. Cramming will not help you with your grades. Pls don’t do this. Just give in an hour a day for a couple of weeks before your exam or test to study.
• Actually read the books assigned. Don’t be a bad person and go on shmoop, litnotes, etc. and read the summary of your book. There may be material that you can only get from actually reading. It will help you with projects in the long run.
• Don’t abandon reading in your free time during high school. There will come a time where you start to feel as if your comprehension skills, literature skills, vocab skills, etc. are not competent enough in your english class.
• When you’re writing notes, pls try to connect the info together. Tbh, that is why people use mind maps. Instead of writing info all over the place, connect them together. For example, “The atmosphere has many gases.” and “The atmosphere is important to our survival” can turn into “The atmosphere is important to our survival because it has many gases.” Voila.
• Try to understand the concept of what you’re learning instead of just memorizing first go. This means to organize your thoughts and understand “why this is happening.” Teachers will put questions where you have to “apply your knowledge” and understanding the concept will help you with this.
• Be friends with your upperclassmen. They aren’t scary and they can really help you. Ask for advice about classes and how to cope with high school.
That is the end of my high school tips for you! This was really long, i know, but i hope you found some helpful tips that will make your years at high school a little bit better. ;-)

There are endless guides on what to bring to uni, endless youtube videos that go through every single thing people are bringing, but you know what? None of those guides are ever geared towards international students who might only have a single suitcase to fill and not an entire car. So, this is for you.
At uni, there are a lot of things you’re going to need. Clothes, things to study with, bedding, kitchen stuff etc. Domestic students might buy all of these things at home and then just cart them all off to uni when it’s time for move-in day. However, you don’t have that luxury. I’ve compiled a list of stuff that you need in your room. Things in bold is stuff you should bring from home, the rest can be bought. Pack the bold things first, then pack things you already own and after that fill your suitcase with other things from the list that you have to buy.
Your dorm will have: a bed, a bedside table, a desk, a desk chair, a wardrobe, some kind of whiteboard. My room did at least so that’s what I’ve accounted for.
Passport (and a copy of it on your computer and phone - this saved my life when my passport was stolen at the airport) ID University admissions letter (if you have issues at the airport) Student Finance documents Accommodation documents Bank details (if you are using your bank at home at all) Insurance details
Laptop and charger Headphones Phone and charger Speaker
Scissors Stationery Diary/planner Hole punch Calculator (make sure to get one that is approved by your university) Pen holder Desk lamp USB
Plates and stuff - 1 big plate, 2 small plates, 2 yoghurt/soup bowls, 2 glasses, mugs from home, forks, knives, spoons, small spoons (4 of each) <– that’s what I brought and it has served me well. 1 saucepan. 1 frying pan - I recommend getting a good one. I got a ceramic 28cm one on sale for £18. Totally worth it and Sharp knives - Once again, I recommend getting good ones. My flatmates borrow mine almost every day. 1 chopping board 1 baking tray Tupperware - this goes hand in hand with my top tip: cooking your own food and making it in advance. Oven gloves Tea towels Grater Vegetable peeler Dish cloths or sponges A tin opener Bottle opener with a corkscrew If you’re a baker: Measuring jug, Measuring tools - 5ml, 15ml, 100ml (aka 1dl), Whisk, Bowl Cheese slicer - essential for any Swede, bring it from the mother country! Zip lock bags or plastic bags Spatula - buy a plastic one Scraper spatula Stirring spoon Water filter - not strictly necessary, but I hate the taste of Glasgow water; it tastes and smells like pool water. With my BRITA filter it goes away. Tea pot - I’m a loose leaf kind of girl Water bottle Lunch box
Bedding - 2 sets of bedsheets, duvet covers, pillow cases. GET THE RIGHT SIZE! Pillow(s) Duvet - this is a tricky one. You might be a cold or hot sleeper and you might be going to a place with a climate you’re not used to. I’ve got a down duvet because down is good at being warm when it’s cold and cool when it hot. That being said, I’m not a cold sleeper so I have a thinner duvet. Mattress protector. Blanket - truly essential Hangers - check out your wardrobe first so that you know you have something to hang your hangers on. Extra wardrobe shelves - My wardrobe barely had any shelves so I got this ikea textile shelf thing that you hang from the clothes rail. But once again, check out your wardrobe before you buy anything. Hanger for door - great to hang towels on if you don’t have a hanger in your bathroom. Laundry bag - just use the ikea bag (if you’re going to ikea *hint hint*) Something to keep your underwear in 2 bath towels and 1 hand towel Toothbrush (and maybe a toothbrush holder) Medicine: painkillers (paracetamol and ibuprofen), cold medicine, cough medicine, plasters, blister plasters, any personal medication. Nail scissors. Toilet brush Razors. Condoms - stay safe!
A torch. A sewing kit. White tac or other things that you can use to put things on walls. Playing cards. Alarm clock. Batteries. Umbrella
Fairy lights Potted plants Posters Boxes Magazine files Candles - but you’re probably not going to be allowed them if you live in dorms Photos Lamp for bedside table Rug Bin Books - if you read Hobby stuff
Clothes and bags- and that’s just a whole separate post

Procrastinating writing your paper? Try this.
Sometimes when we have a daunting paper to complete, we tend to procrastinate. I find that once I begin, the words flow easily. The blank page curse. It may feel natural to start from the beginning, but I challenge you instead, to start from the middle. Create a general outline for your paper by writing one rough draft topic sentence for each paragraph, then pick any paragraph you like, and begin! It's much better to start on the part you feel is the most difficult and get it out of the way, or, to banish the blank page curse, start with the easiest, the one you are most knowledgeable about. When you start with the introduction, you are giving an overview of a paper you haven't written yet! This can be a challenge because you may add or remove pieces later, and for many of us, we may not even fully know what our paper is about! How could we possibly introduce it!
