Full range of Stat selectable exotics baybeeeeee

Gearing in exotics outside of the standard core stats (like berserker!) can be a pain in the butt. But yesterday's patch added a game changer. Previously if you wanted stat selectable exotics you'd either need to run around verdant brink collecting airship parts and pray you'd get lucky finding a T4 night meta going. Or have a few pieces of armor and weapons on the TP that were stat selectable, or a few other things like waiting for festivals, or slogging through pvp/wvw for a while.

It is a WvW method so it wont be for everyone, but you'll have some badges of honor squirreled away from achievement point chests I'm sure.

Honestly, stat selectable exotic trinkets alone is *huge* QoL. They really sucked ass to get.

And a full range of stat selectable exotic weapons for cheap is really nice. Like this is a really, really, really nice addition.

i really enjoyed soto's story, one thing i want to talk about very briefly is the dynamic between the astral ward/wizards and the commander.

its always a tough job to introduce a new cast of characters, and i think anet did a really good job here with the wizards.

i reaaaally enjoyed that you could immediately tell the wizards had very complex ties. of course everyone gets along but there's just such a weird tension in the air. it really had the same feeling of, like when you start a new job, everyone is very friendly until you get to learn all the weird drama that went on before you started.

idk it had a completely different vibe to, say, the early days of dragon's watch where everyone was new, or end of dragons where some people kinda knew each other but not really.

i just felt like, literally, first day on the job new guy who hasn't a clue whats going on and zojja's your "new-ish but started a few weeks before you" colleague showing you all the other guys who work there, and i kind of loved it. genuinely enjoyed feeling like a total outsider

Thinking this morning about PoF and the characters that join you for that storyline. World's worst heist movie gone wrong gone sexual. The Commander is getting the crew back together for one more job. They need their best, the best of the best! to help them track down the baddie and bring him to justice. And then no one answers their calls or voicemails and the ragtag randoms that DO show up are like. Divorced older guy who went on vacation to purgatory and won't stop mentioning it like he wants to talk about it, but then gruffly refuses to give details. Your devout religious friend who just learned that the flying spaghetti monster she's worshipped for years is not a hoax, but a real asshole, just the worst of the worst, and she's making her crisis of faith AND her arguments with her gf your problem. Bisexual guy on a vacation who's down if you are (and if anyone else is, just FYI! Just putting it out there!) who makes the crew stop in at every bar casino and tourist trap between here and there. AND! We also have this RUNAWAY INFANT! Just in case we need her help, she has a certain set of skills. Commander looking around like fuuuuuck man. This heist will surely go awry fine, just fine! And then they get mega stabbed halfway through the mission and DIE. Ragtag weirdo crew is standing around their corpse like 🧍‍♀️ 🧍‍♂️ 🧍‍♂️ um. Oh fuck. AND we lost the baby.

How old is your Commander?

bit of rambling but ive been thinking about this for a while

what ive found roleplaying an older character is that gw2 makes pretty clear to you your character is supposed to be a young person, 20-30ish years old.

netta is around 37-40 when the personal story starts, making her nearly 50 by end of dragons, and ive found it really interesting how roleplaying an older character recontextualises a lot of the character interactions throughout the story, as many are clearly supposed to be, well, young people.

spoilers for some of ibs and eod under the cut

while netta was fairly age-matched with destiny’s edge, viewing them the most as equal partners, she is suddenly like an outcast to destiny’s edge 2.0, this group of young, brash and boisterous 20-somethings (and literal child taimi) who she’s now suddenly of charge of and who all refer to her as “boss”, cementing that she’s not an equal to them, rather their manager. As their relationships grow and they all become closer, netta still ends up filling the role of a parental figure. of course they’re friends, but the age disparity means they will never be on the same level socially.

the clash with braham after eir’s death becomes more fraught as netta struggles to get on braham’s level and connect with him as an equal. Whether consciously or not, she talks down to him as a parent to their child, further deepening their rift as braham is wounded by the thought that netta would try to forcefully fill the hole eir left in his life.

even once their relationship is healed, braham referring to netta as his best friend (while still true) still feels strange to the both of them.

there’s an extra layer of pain from almorra’s death as netta realises that she is more alike to the “old soldiers” more than she thought. the illusion of the unkillable commander cracks more and more as these old legends are cut down, one by one. how long will she last as the fighting and war goes on?

whatever disagreements they have, netta still feels more close to rytlock as they become some of the last of the old guard standing. who’s side is she on when the charr civil war becomes more and more about the past vs the future, young vs old? What does she think of all these reckless young charr, turning to dominion? does she pity them? understand them? admonish them? certainly, she realises she’s no longer part of that generation as ryland sits across from her at the parley table.

how long can she be aurene’s champion until her body gives up? becomes too weak to fight? so many rely on her, how long will it be until she cannot physically go on?

with all these young, fresh-faced people around her, she realises again that she’s alone.

so i like to encorporate a lot of the “canon” story of gw2 into my character backstories and bios, its just the way i like to play. that said, does anyone else have “canon characters” for each race?

so like, the character i consider the canon commander is netta, who is human, and in my mind she followed the human personal story, and also the dungeon story and eventually the entire story as we know it. BUT i also have a canon sylvari, who did all the sylvari personal story, joined the vigil etc and knew caithe, up until HoT where their story deviates (as i dont really consider them the comm). 

in my mind it means that no matter what, at least all of what happens in the game is considered to have, well, actually happened. but ofc that is just how i like to do things. let me know in the tags if youre the same
